Stage 1 Report

Welcome to the first stage of the Balkans International which traves 187 hilly kilometers between Lubljana and Samobor. In the previous two years the break has taken this stage and it has shaped the race. A boatload of KOM points available as well.

The stage favorites are the riders who are expected to top the GC when we reach Greece.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/favs.jpg

Since the break on this stage has been key in past editions we get some early coverage from the race. The first attacker is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Siskevicius followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Nolf and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Moricz, then a little further back to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Sinkeldam.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/01.jpg

Just 7k gone. There are three more attackers off the front: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Velasco, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Zukowsky, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Suter. Carlsberg looking to put two in the break. More riders trying to go but the peloton is responding. The attackers on the left are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Ganna, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Phodingam, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Tanovitchii and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Lane. Leading the response from the peloton are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Schlechter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Grigrian and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/voy.png Saya Kuroeda. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Sweeny and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Pedersen behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/02.jpg

The four additional attackers are brought back leaving 7 riders out front. But a few k later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Lane tries again, this time joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Rhim.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/03.jpg

The leaders have 5k to the summit of the first climb, a Cat 2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Nolf and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Zukowsky have been dropped by the leading group and are back with the 2 latest attackers. They trail the leading five by 37 seconds and lead the peloton by 49.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/04.jpg

1.3k to the top and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Sinkeldam attacks, only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Velasco is able to stay with him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Siskevicius 11 seconds behind where he has been caught by Rhim and Lane. Suter also still in this group. The other breakaway riders spread out behind. The peloton is 2’03 behind the leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/05.jpg

Velasco powers away to take the points at the top ahead of Sinkeldam. The Italian has been great in breakaways this year.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/06.jpg

The rest of the points go to Lane, Rhim and Suter. A short descent than a Cat 4 climb come next.

By the top of the Cat 4 the front 5 have come together. The points go to Lane (5+6=11), Velasco (3+10=13) and Sinkeldam (1+8=9). Rhim and Suter are in the same group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/07.jpg

By the time the peloton crosses the same point they have eased off the chasing. The gap to the front 5 is 4’40. Siskevicius trails the leaders by 45 seconds, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Moricz by 2’04. The others have been caught by the peloton. 159k to ride, it looks like the first phase of the race is over.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/08.jpg

At the next climb, a Cat 3, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Sinkeldam attacks early and hangs on to take the points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Lane and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Rhim. Sinkeldam and Lane both now have 15 KOM points, Velasco on 13. The peloton has closed to 3’13, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Siskevicius was able to rejoin the front group but was dropped on the climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Siskevicius is able to rejoin and is takes the points at the first sprint point ahead Velasco and Lane

At the second sprint point it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Siskevicius - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Velasco - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Sinkeldam. If the break stays away the time bonuses could be important. Right now, their lead is 2’37 with 115k to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Moricz has been caught by the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/10.jpg

2k to the top of the next climb, the Cat 2 to Jugorje Pri Metliki. Lane pushing the pace in the breakaway. The peloton had closed to within 1’45 but has eased off now and the lead is 1’56.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/11.jpg

At the top Sinkeldam takes the points and the KOM lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/12.jpg

The full KOM standings:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/KOMs1.jpg

80k to go for the peloton and panic stations for Carrefour as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Bakelants is among 25 riders gapped by the peloton, despite an easing of the pace that has seen the break’s lead grow to 2’51.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/13.jpg

60k to go for the pelotn. Bakelants was able to rejoin but is still sitting a long way back. The gap is down to 2’02 with many teams contributing to the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/14.jpg

1.4k to the top of the next climb, a Cat 4, and Rhim goes early. These punchy climbs aren’t really the McCormick loanee’s best terrain but he doesn’t seem to care. Velasco follows.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/15.jpg

Rhim’s attack drops Siskevicius and Suter but the KOM points go to Velasco (5+21=26), Sinkeldam (3+25=28) and Lane (1+17=18).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/16.jpg

50k to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Rhim pays for his bravery, he is the next one dropped. Peloton at 1’56.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/17.jpg

43k and 1.3k to the top of the next Cat 4. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Sinkeldam drops pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Lane having already lost pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Velasco. He should be able to secure the KOM jersey, the question is can he stay ahead of the peloton. They are at just 1’16 behind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Jensen has been dropped from the peloton, his teammates trying to bring him back but it doesn’t look good.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/18.jpg

3k to the top of the final Cat 2 climb today for Sinkeldam. He is the only rider left ahead of the peloton and with just a 37 second lead it doesn’t look like the breakaway is going to take the stage today. Jensen has not been able to rejoin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Sinkeldam hangs on and adds 10 more points to his KOM lead. 31k to go, a downhill, a Cat 3 climb and a downhill to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/20.jpg

18k to go and 7.7k in the last climb and Sinkeldam is caught by the Mapei led peloton. 116 riders left. This climb is 9.5k at 3.9% but the last 4k are much steeper. The rider who goes over the top first will have a good shot to hold the lead and descend to a stage win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/21.jpg

3k to the top, 13k to ride. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Sagan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/voy.png Kinoshita are in 3rd and 4th wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/akm.png Amezawa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Cort Nielsen are the next two favorites in a strong position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/22.jpg

1.4k to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Smirnovs setting the pace but the cream is rising to the top as many of the favorites are well positioned. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Lopez up to 5th wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/23.jpg

But nobody is willing to take the plunge and over the top they are still together. 10k to go, the stage will be decided on the descent and the sprint. A 44 rider group has a 1’04 gap at the front. Most notable riders to miss it are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Bakelants, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Betancourt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Turgis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/akm.png Amezawa (who is likely working for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/akm.png Kwiatkowski).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/24.jpg

But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/voy.png Kinoshita was just biding his time; he attacks on the descent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Guerreiro was able to bridge across and the Voyagin rider eased off. 5k to go and the group is back together with Tryg on the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/26.jpg

2k to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman on the front now. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Lutsenko is one of the best sprinters among the puncheurs, and now he has moved up. Another strong sprinter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Ponzi, now near the front as well. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Reichenbach working for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/27.jpg

600 meters to go Roman pulls to the left. Reichenbach ahead of Ponzi, Lutsenko, Sagan and Kinoshita.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/28.jpg

The curves at the finish may mean pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Reichenbach can hold on here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/29.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Reichenbach wins it maybe working for Ponzi was a diversion.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/30.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman hangs on for second ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Ponzi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Sagan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Lutsenko. UBS and Isostar with two each in the top five as they made the race on the downhill.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/31.jpg

The rest of the top 10 are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/voy.png Kinoshita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Lopez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Buchmann pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Skujins and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Blums.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S1/32.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Reichenbach leads the GC and Points and UBS the teams. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman is the best young rider leader.
