Some gains made yesterday while others lost big time which all resulted in an unlikely GC leader who spent most of the day in the breakaway. Another opportunity for the GC favourites and no doubt a chance for riders to find success from the breakaway. A chance for someone to put an effort in to win the KOM too.
134km still to go and we have a breakaway group of 7 who have a gap of 3'09. The only strong cobblestone rider is Nolf but he is + 11'56 in the GC. He is joined by:
Betancourt, Lasinis
Stannard
Knox
Quispe
Dumoulin
The Zalgiris duo are 1-2 through the first KOM of the day with Lasinis in first.
Nolf wins the 2nd KOM sprint as the gap back to the Peloton grows to over 5 minutes.
Nolf wins the 3rd KOM having benefitted from the cobbled sector up the hill. The gap now 6'22.
Knox wins the next KOM as the leading group is down to 5 with Dumoulin and Quispe dropped. The Peloton not fussed at all with the group as the gap is up to 8'37.
Nolf wins the next KOM with 75km still to the finish.
66km to go for the Peloton and the most recent section has seen the group be reduced to 47 although some riders should make it back. Out in front it's Stannard and Nolf who are 1'52 ahead of Lasinis. It's then a further 7'35 back to the Peloton so it's looking good for a stage win for one of these 3!
45km to go for the now 71 man Peloton and they are now 4'50 behind the leading duo.
30km remain for our leading duo. Nolf finds himself alone on the cobblestone sections but Stannard is able to catch him again on the flat sections in between. The 80 man Peloton is 4'19 behind these 2.
18km for the Peloton and we see the first attacks from the GC riders. It's Trentin (3rd @ + 12") who has Blythe (+ 9'08) and Altur (11th @ + 42") for company.
Meanwhile up front Nolf is on his own with 13.5km to go. Stannard is 1'16 behind him while the trio who just attacked are a further 1'52 back.
15km for the Peloton and that trio has been caught as it was only Trentin willing to drive them forward.
They then come onto the Haaghoek as Blythe goes again! Trentin goes after him. The Peloton can thank Kumara who is doing the majority of the chasing.
8km now and the same duo go again! It's Owen leading the reaction at the front of the Peloton.
It's certainly eventful at the moment as Altur goes for it with Trentin on his wheel. The Peloton moving at such a pace that these efforts are struggling to have any success. Only 4km to go for the Peloton.
But the real winner of the day is Frederik Nolf who takes the stage from the breakaway! He's held on comfortably in the end and really benefitted from being the only strong cobblestone rider in the break today.
1km remaining for Altur and Trentin but their gap over the Peloton is only a couple hundred metres as Van Keirsbulck looks to close in.
But they do hold on as Trentin follows up his stage win yesterday with a 2nd place today. Altur is 3rd.
Not much of a gap for them in the end though as HelloFresh sweep up the Top 5 with Thwaites 4th, Kump 5th and Van Keirsbulck 6th.
Barthe just takes 7th ahead of Breen while current race leader Van der Haar is 9th.
Van der Haar holds onto Yellow but Trentin is equal on time after the bonus seconds he gained today.
Trentin leads the Points after his consistency.
Nolf is further rewarded for his efforts today with the lead in the KOM.
Anderberg remains in the lead in the U25s.
Minions still lead the Teams.
We do have some abandonments today due to not making the time limit:
Gunman
Papanov
Forcellini
Bilbao
Di Maggio
