Tour d'Andorra - Stage 5

Tour d'Andorra - Stage 5 Report

It's the final stage here in Andorra and it's arguably the toughest of the lot. At 230km and with 4 Category 1 climbs, it'll be a real test of grit and resilience! The day starts with the Coll del Canto which they then descend and have a few kilometres of peace before they take on the Port de la Bonaigua which is a brutal climb halfway through the day. A long descent down into Estenos provides an opportunity to recover before the last 60km.The Port de Bales is shorter than the 2 earlier climbs but it's steeper. After summiting this there are only 31km to the line which is a descent and then a shorter climb up the Col de Peyresourde which crests 6km from the finish with the final 6km being a short downhill before an uphill finish into Peyragudes.

Still early on here as we make our way up the first climb of the day. 20 riders have made it into the breakaway!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/taf.png Atapuma (19th @ 6'41)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Roson (21st @ 6'47, 3rd in KOM)

Only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Roson is really in contention for the King of the Mountains here so he is easily able to win the first KOM and goes level at the top. The breakaway's gap over the top is 4'49.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0002.jpg

The Peloton has done a good job managing the gap on the descent, bringing it down to 2'30, but will likely lose time again up this next climb given the chasers aren't the best climbers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0003.jpg

A bit more competition this time around but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Roson takes maximum points again which gives him a 16 points lead! He should have this one sewn up as his nearest competitors aren't in the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0004.jpg

80km still to go and our lead group is down to 17. They have 1'36 to a group of 3 earlier dropped escapees and an additional 2 minutes back to the Peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0005.jpg

50km to the finish, a gap of exactly 4 minutes for the breakaway, and there are no flat roads left today. The breakaway starting the Port de Bales climb with is 18.7km!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0006.jpg

34.5km to go for the Peloton and another 3.2km of this climb but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Monsalve (6th @ + 2'02) has decided it's time to give the other GC riders something to think about as he launches an attack!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/voy.png Shikai drags the Peloton up with him but this just provides a launch pad for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Alarcon (7th @ + 2'22).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Wellens decides he can't let this one go so he is the one to react. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Oomen (2nd @ + 55") is in close pursuit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0009.jpg

This shuts down the Alarcon attack but then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Monsalve decides to go again!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0010.jpg

Meanwhile, at the front, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Talansky is first through the KOM.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun has sacrificed himself a lot this race and does the same here as he drags the 21 man leader group up to the latest attack and they're all together with 31km remaining.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0012.jpg

The 20 man GC favourites group reaches the base of the Calo de Peyresourde which means only 14km to the line. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Amador is the first to launch an attack which gets an instant reaction from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Alarcon, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Schelling and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Penasa.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0013.jpg

It's getting real antsy amongst the GC riders as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Monsalve is the next to go with 12km to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0014.jpg

10km to go for our leading group which is now 9 riders. They have about a minute and a half back to the GC group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/voy.png Shikai is next to try his luck in the favourites group, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Oomen in his wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0016.jpg

Bad news for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png cycleYorkshire as Carthy (10th) is dropped from this group. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Latour (16th) also back here but Bernal remains in the group ahead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun marking every attack right now but, when no one is attacking, he's setting a fairly slow pace which is good for the dropped riders but also for the breakaway!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0018.jpg

7km to go and less than 1km of this climb remaining and it's then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Oomen who attacks which triggers an immediate response from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Wellens.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0019.jpg

But then it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Wellens himself who puts the pressure on the others to try and follow!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0020.jpg

3km remaining on the stage and out front it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Soler who has a gap of 25 seconds to a group of 5 consisting of the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Carlsberg duo, Aranburu and Eg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Scarponi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Bouchard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Rodrigues. 40 seconds behind them is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Wellens who has 15 seconds back to the other GC riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun brings the GC group up to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Wellens with 2.6km to the finish. They are 32 seconds behind the group of 5.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0022.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Soler is under the kite but he doesn't just have 5 riders behind him! He has the whole GC leader group as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0023.jpg

Only 500m to go for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Soler but he's going to have to hold off the charge coming from just behind him!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0024.jpg

Meanwhile, there's concern for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Quintana who may lose his 3rd place if there are gaps awarded here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0025.jpg

Further back, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Schelling (5th @ 1'50) is in real danger of dropping out the Top 10 altogether!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0026.jpg

200m for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Soler who looks like he may just be able to hold on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0027.jpg

Heartbreak on the line as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Wellens makes it a 2nd stage win! A deserving Yellow Jersey for the Belgian!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0028.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Keizer also gets past pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Soler on the line. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Monsalve is 4th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer in 5th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin in 6th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0029.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Alarcon, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Eg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/voy.png Shikai finish with the same time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0030.jpg

A group of 4 are next over the line. + 29" for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Bouchard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Scarponi. + 38" for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Oomen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Aranburu.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0031.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Bernal is +49" and is just ahead of a group at +56" made up of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Rodrigues, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Talansky, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Amador, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Latour and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Arndt.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0032.jpg

Disaster indeed for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Quintana who is + 1'19 and will lose his podium spot. He comes in just ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/taf.png Atapuma and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Penasa who are both given + 1'32.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0033.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Schelling will definitely drop somewhat as he is + 2'23.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0034.jpg

An awful day for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Carthy who hasn't had the best time here in Andorra, he is + 5'15.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0035.jpg

But time to celebrate success! All plaudits and congratulations go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Tim Wellens who really did dominate here and ends up winning the Tour d'Andorra by 1'53. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Oomen only just held onto 2nd but it's a great result for the Dutchman. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin takes the final podium place. The Venezuelans, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Monsalve and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Alarcon are 4th and 5th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Quintana drops from the podium down to 6th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/voy.png Shikai is 7th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Schelling had a good Tour until the final day which sees him drop to 8th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Carapaz makes it another South American in the Top 10 while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Amador is the best of the CT in 10th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0036.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Wellens also wins the Points Classification. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Alarcon consistently high enough to just take 2nd ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Oomen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0038.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Roson is our King of the Mountains. He was aggressive throughout and made sure he was in the moves where it mattered.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0037.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Bernal likely benefits from relative freedom compared to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun as he is the best U25 rider by only 23 seconds. No other rider anywhere near these 2.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0039.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Team UBS may have lost their best GC spot on the final day but they still win the Teams Classification.
