Tour d'Andorra - Stage 3 Report

Life doesn't get any easier for the riders. After the lack of action for the GC favourites yesterday, expect something completely different. The first pedal stroke for the riders today will start their venture up the 19km HC climb of Port d'Envalira. It's then a long descent down into Puigcerda before 2 Cat 1 climbs, Collade de Tosses and the shorter but steeper Coll de Jou. To finish the stage, the riders then have a very steep HC climb up to the finish line at the Vallter 2000. At only 135km, this could be fast and tough for many riders to hold on!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun is allowed to attack early on and is easily first over the KOM taking maximum points. We shall wait for the gaps to settle before seeing who else is ahead of the Peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0001.jpg

A pretty incredible road to ride on here, you definitely don't want to be going over the sides! At the front of the race we now have:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun (31st @ + 6'32)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Roson (15th @ + 3'18, 4th in KOM)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Badilatti (2nd in Points, 2nd in KOM)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Anguilet (5th in Points, 3rd in KOM)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0002.jpg

99km to go and the leading quartet are 57 seconds clear of this group of 9. There is then a 2'48 gap back to the Peloton but with 4 other riders scattered in between.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/taf.png Atapuma (23rd @ + 3'55), Henao
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bwt.png Jacobsen (1st in KOM)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Helme
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Bonnin
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bns.png Bevin
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Chaves, Herrada
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/voy.png Salcone

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0003.jpg

85km to go and the three front groups merge to make a 15 man leading group. The additional 2 riders are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Villalobos and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/esc.png Malacarne.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0004.jpg

There are now no riders between the Peloton and our leading group. The gap is 3'06 with 70km to the line and still 14km of climbing remaining as the riders begin the long but not particularly steep Collada de Tosses.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0005.jpg

A good fight at the front for the points over the top of the climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bns.png Bevin just takes it ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Badilatti who goes into the lead by 2 points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Anguilet.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0006.jpg

40km remaining for the leaders who still have a 2'53 gap back to the Peloton now led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Zalgiris who are slowly closing the gap on the downhill.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0007.jpg

The breakaway in the sights of the Peloton who have the lead down to within 2 minutes again. There are still 30km to the line and another 5km of the Coll de Jou climb remaining.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Anguilet takes maximum points this time around and moves into the lead by 6 points! He should be the KOM leader at the end of today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0009.jpg

16km to the line and it's all uphill! The 13 man breakaway 2'37 ahead of the 113 rider Peloton so it's looking fairly promising at the moment.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Bonnin ups the pace in the breakaway as we now have only 7 riders in the leading group with 11km to the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0011.jpg

7.5km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun attacks his former breakaway companions.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0012.jpg

At the same time, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Penasa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin attack at the front of the Peloton who have 8.1km remaining.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0013.jpg

This doesn't last and so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Latour is the next to give it a go with 6.7km remaining. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Penasa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Keizer are in close pursuit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0014.jpg

5km to go and it's now only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun out front who is 1'38 ahead with only 4.4km for him to the line. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Oomen is the next GC favourite to attack!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0015.jpg

3km to go now and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Oomen (4th @ 1'22) is 29 seconds ahead of the GC group where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Quintana is leading. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun still 1'12 ahead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Wellens takes the lead in the favourites group and drags everyone up to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Oomen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0017.jpg

Some surprising strugglers who aren't losing time just yet but definitely could. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Carthy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Alarcon and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Amador the bigger names here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0018.jpg

1km to a stage win for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun. He remains 1'04 ahead of the GC group so he should be able to hold on here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0019.jpg

The final accelerations to the line are underway in the GC group. Will any gaps open up between these riders??

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0020.jpg

Up the road, it's a well-deserved stage win for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun who sacrificed himself for his team leader yesterday. This should re-ignite his hopes of a good GC as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0021.jpg

+ 29" for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Schelling in 2nd while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Nerz gets the same time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0022.jpg

+ 42" for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Oomen who takes 4th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Wellens.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0023.jpg

Also in this group are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Quintana, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Monsalve and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0024.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Penasa is + 1'06.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0025.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Carapaz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/voy.png Shikai come in at + 1'21.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0026.jpg

+ 2'05 for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Latour and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Arndt.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0027.jpg

It's then + 2'25 for a group including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Henao Montoya, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Alarcon, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Amador and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Carthy.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0028.jpg

His team did a lot of work but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Keizer was unable to reward them today as he is + 3'42.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0029.jpg

It's a similar picture to yesterday as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Wellens maintains his 44 second lead over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Quintana. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Oomen is now in the final podium spot after pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Alarcon drops down to 10th! A complete contrast to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Schelling though who rises from 8th up into 4th. The real test for all of these riders comes tomorrow in the TT.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0030.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Wellens back to outright leader in the Points Classification. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Quintana moves into 2nd.
An eventful day in the KOM sees pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Anguilet in the lead by 6 points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Badilatti. No points available tomorrow so it'll be all to play for on the final stage.
Unsurprisingly, given the result, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun takes the lead in the U25s but he's only 37 seconds ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Bernal.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Team UBS take the lead in the Teams Classification.
