Tour d'Andorra - Stage 2

Tour d'Andorra - Stage 2 Report

No lead-up into the Mountains today as we leave Prades Conflent Canigo and start with 34km of climbing up to the summit of the Category 1 Col de la Perche. It's then a long but not particularly steep descent to the base of the Category 1 Coll de la Rabassa which the riders crest with 30km to the finish. That's not the end of the climbing though as the riders descend and then have the Category 2 Alto de la Comella which summits only 6km from the finish with the final few kilometres all downhill to the finish in Andorra la Vella. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Wellens will be hoping to consolidate on his performance from yesterday but there are numerous riders who will really want to see improvements.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%202/Stage%202%20Profile.png

25 riders are on the attack early on but we will see who remains after 20km of steep climbing up the Col de la Perche.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0001.jpg

The Peloton seem relatively happy with letting so many riders be in the breakaway as they set a rather leisurely pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0002.jpg

It's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bwt.png Jacobsen who takes maximum points through the KOM and moves into 2nd, only 4 points off the lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Villalobos is 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0003.jpg

115km to go and we have a 22 man leading group. They have a gap of 3'37 to the Peloton with 2 riders in between. Not as much strength in here as yesterday but still a few decent riders highlighted by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ccc.png Serry who is only at + 3'49.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ccc.png Serry (21st @ 3'49)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Martin, Ziesler, Arensman, Ulysbayev

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0004.jpg

70km to go for the leaders and a fairly good pace in the Peloton has brought the gap down to exactly 2 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ccc.png Serry is the only breakaway rider interested in the intermediate sprint and so wins it with ease. 56km to go and the gap still 1'52.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0006.jpg

Now on the lower slopes of the Coll de la Rabassa with 12.5km of climbing ahead of the riders with the first half of the climb steeper than the 2nd. The gap down to 1'13 but will the pace in the Peloton be maintained?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0007.jpg

The breakaway being split up is of no surprise with still 7.5km to the top of the climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Anguilet wins the KOM ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Badilatti. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Martin is just behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0009.jpg

It's looking promising for our 2 leaders right now who are well over 2 minutes clear of the Peloton.

10km remaining for the leaders which is made up of 4km of climbing at an average 8.2% gradient followed by a 6km descent, with a small bump on the way down for good measure.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Badilatti is first over the KOM this time as he and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Anguilet will be going head-to-head for the stage win here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0012.jpg

Only 2.5km remaining and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Badilatti holds a lead of 200m which he had over the climb. Can the Swiss hold on?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0013.jpg

Under the kite and it's looking pretty good for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Badilatti now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0014.jpg

He takes no chances as he sprints all the way to the line. Stage 2 is won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Matteo Badilatti from the breakaway!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Anguilet has to settle for 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bwt.png Jacobsen is 3rd on the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0017.jpg

Meanwhile, with 2.5km remaining for the Peloton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Carthy (9th @ 1'50) is trying an opportunistic move to gain a few seconds back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Martin takes 4th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/esc.png Malacarne.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0019.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Carthy does get himself a gap as they approach the kite.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0020.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Schelling only just holds on for 6th on the stage ahead of a charging pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Carthy.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0021.jpg

The Peloton are led in by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Schmid. They are, rather controversially, given the same time as the two ahead of them so there is no time gain at all for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Carthy.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0022.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Wellens won't be too unhappy with stages like this as he loses no time to anyone behind him and remains in Yellow for another day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0023.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Wellens leads the Points but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Badilatti is level with him now.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bwt.png Jacobsen leads the KOM by 8 points.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Bernal with no gains or losses in the U25s.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Eurosport x GCN remain in the lead in the Teams but only by 32 seconds now to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Team UBS.
