Tour d'Andorra - Stage 1

Tour d'Andorra - Stage 1 Report

We are straight into the action here in Andorra with a 182.6km stage. It's a relatively slow incline until the 2nd intermediate sprint at 103km. From there we have a Category 2 climb up to Puerto de Ventana followed by a long descent to the base of the very steep Category 1 Puerto de San Lorenzo which descends to the start of the final climb, which is HC rated, up to the finish at La Farrapona. Unlikely that the race will be won today, but it could be lost.

Huge crowds to see off the riders here for the start of their 5 day journey through the Andorran Mountains.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0001.jpg

146km still to go on today's stage and 77km to the first climb but we have a breakaway of no less than 18 riders! A real mix of climbing ability in here but definitely a few names who could well keep away from the Peloton if they take a good lead into the 2nd half of the stage.

The 2nd and final of the intermediate sprints today is won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Scheit ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Leknessund and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Lafay. Note the first one was won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ccc.png Serry with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Leknessund 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Scheit 3rd. 80km to go and starting to climb for the first time today, the gap is 3'15.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0003.jpg

The breakaway starting to split up which isn't too surprising given the relative strength of some compared to others.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Roson is the strongest climber in the breakaway and he is the first through the Cat 2 KOM sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0005.jpg

We have a 16 man leading group beginning the 2nd climb of the day with 45km to the finish. Their gap back to a 52 man Peloton is 2'51. It doesn't appear that any team leaders are missing from this group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0006.jpg

A lot of credit to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Pernsteiner who has led the Peloton up much of this climb so far and has the gap down to 2 minutes with still 4.7km of climbing for the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0007.jpg

2km to the top of this climb for the breakaway and they are already down to only 6 riders. Their gap back to the Peloton now only 1'35 where it's now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Budyak putting in a shift.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0008.jpg

Unfortunately the cameras missed it but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Roson won the KOM again. At the front now are only 4 riders. He is joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Dunne, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ccc.png Serry and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/taf.png Atapuma.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0009.jpg

20km for the leading quartet and it's all uphill from here. Their lead back out to over 2 minutes due to some miscommunication in the Peloton where no one was setting the pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0010.jpg

17.5km remaining for the 41 man Peloton and we see the first attack! It's no surprise that it comes from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Alarcon! Others are looking to react.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0011.jpg

He fails to get a gap but this has the desired effect of upping the ante in this group as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Bernal goes to the front. The gap to the front 4 is down to 1'23 now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0012.jpg

12.5km to go now and it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Monsalve who launches an attack. He is closely followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Wellens, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Quintana and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Alarcon.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Bernal then springs forward with Latour, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Oomen sees benefit in this and joins along for the ride.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0014.jpg

7.5km to the line and it won't be a breakaway win today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0015.jpg

It's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Wellens who goes again with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Quintana and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Monsalve for company.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0016.jpg

About to come under 5km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Wellens goes again. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Quintana tries but can't keep with him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Monsalve unable to go with either of them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0017.jpg

The larger group of GC leaders splits with 4km to go. In this second group are the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Polar duo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Penasa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bns.png Ablenado and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Arndt.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0018.jpg

Only 1km for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Wellens and he's looking locked on for the stage win. He'll want to keep as much of a gap as possible so there'll be no foot off the gas in this final kilometre.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0019.jpg

Behind him is still pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Quintana seemingly riding his own race right now. Then it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Monsalve trying to hold off the charge of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Alarcon and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Oomen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0020.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Tim Wellens does indeed win Stage 1 here in Andorra. A very strong performance from him today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Quintana is 2nd, good signs from the Colombian. + 36" for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0022.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Alarcon just takes 3rd ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Oomen. + 1'02 for them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0023.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Monsalve was passed by the duo ahead of him with only 300m to go but is 5th @ + 1'20.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0024.jpg

Closely behind him is a group of 6 coming in at + 1'30. They are headed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Carapaz who is 6th. It’s then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/voy.png Shikai, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Amador, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Carthy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Keizer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Schelling.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0025.jpg

+ 2'12 for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin who won't be happy with his performance today. He comes over the line with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Nerz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Henao Montoya.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0026.jpg

At + 3'13 and 3'21 it's then a group including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Latour and Bernal alongside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Penasa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Arndt.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0027.jpg

It really was a bad day for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer who comes in at + 4'09.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0028.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Wellens definitely the strongest today and he has a 44 second gap to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Quintana going into Stage 2. It's then more than a minute to 3rd place onwards.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Andorra/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0029.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Wellens leads the Points as well.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Roson in the KOM lead by 6 points to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Wellens.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Bernal best U25 rider, + 2'59 for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Eurosport x GCN lead the Teams Classification.
