le Tour de France - Stage 19 Report
It's the final Mountain stage of the 2021 Tour de France and the final chance to create gaps before tomorrow's Time Trial. Only 1 second separates pre-race favourite, Lecuisinier, in Yellow from Sicard in 2nd. The Festina man has been really poor and this could be his last chance to claim a stage win and no better time to do it than on the stage in which the riders climb up Alpe d'Huez not once but twice, including up to the finish line!
Egger wins the first KOM of the day after no contest from Vosekalns. They are just ahead of a much larger group which should form the breakaway today.
22 riders in the breakaway today! After only 25km of today's stage, their gap is already 7'49. The following are the key GC and KOM riders in here:
GC KOM Bongiorno 15th @ 10'59 7th @ 62 Pinot 16th @ 11'01 5th @ 82 Inkelaar 17th @ 12'33 1st @ 178 O'Connor 19th @ 15'18 2nd @ 125 Bardet 3rd @ 116 Rodriguez 4th @ 109 Aular 21st
Our 22 man breakaway roll through the intermediate sprint just before the start of the climb up the Cat 2 Col d'Ornon. 92km to go and their gap back to the Peloton is 6'19.
O'Connor only just pips Inkelaar to first over the KOM. The Dutchman's lead is at 53 points though which is just about unassailable.
The breakaway starts their first ascent of Alpe d'Huez with 60km to go and a gap back to the Peloton of 8'22, a result of the sprinters being on the front up the last climb…
A very disappointing pace being set in the Peloton who still have 6km of climbing remaining. The breakaway are 8'43 ahead and have only 3km to the top.
Aular leads a 7 man group over the top. We will see if any riders can re-join after they go over the Col de Sarenne in 8km time.
It's still a 7 man group as they go over the top and begin the descent down to the start of the final climb up Alpe d'Huez. The chances of one of these 7 taking a stage win are very high given their gap back to the Peloton is still well over 8 minutes.
12.5km to the line for the leading group and one of these 8 will win today's stage. Likely to be some big jumps up the GC as well!
Pinot
Aular
Bongiorno
Inkelaar
Vosekalns
Higuita
Smith
Sosa
Voskalns attacks with 11km to go. Bongiorno and Pinot have reacted instantly.
8km now to go and Bongiorno attacks the other 2 riders and gets himself a gap.
The Peloton is down to 36 riders with 8km to go. The leaders are 2km up the road. Pluchkin (5th @ 2'02)attempts an attack but De la Cruz is attentive at the front for his Leader.
Then with still 7.2km to go we see some aggression from Lecuisinier! The Yellow Jersey maybe trying to show that no one else is going to be on the top step in Paris.
Pluchkin helped the 22 man group up towards Lecuisinier but he then accelerates again!
Sicard is the only one trying to keep with him!
4km for the GC riders and Lecuisinier not putting his all into these attacks so far as Hirt catches him but he then goes again!
Up the road, Bongiorno has 1.3km to the finish line but he has a group of 7 only 32 seconds behind him!
Aular attacks under the 1km kite and the Italian looks like he's lost his chance of a stage win here.
Only 500m to the line for Aular and he's got a comfortable gap to those behind him!
And it is indeed a stage win for Aular!
Bongiorno is 2nd on the stage but he could be looking at gaining a few places in the GC.
Further back, Lecuisinier has 700m to go and a gap back to Hirt and Barguil who are a further 40 seconds ahead of the next GC riders.
Even further back are Kritskiy and Chiarello who is looking at sliding down the Top 10 from his 3rd place.
Sosa wins the battle of the Colombians for 3rd place against Higuita.
Pinot is 5th on the road ahead of Roglic, Vosekalns and Inkelaar.
O'Connor is 9th on the road but the real focus here is on Lecuisinier who is + 2'42 behind Aular. It may not be a stage win but he finally showed when it was most necessary and will open up a gap going into the TT tomorrow.
Hirt is next on the road, + 36" to Lecuisinier.
Barguil is just behind him, +52".
Pluchkin, Eastman and Yates come through + 1'38 behind Lecuisinier.
Sicard finishes in a small group with Choi and Bennett, + 1'50 to Yellow for them.
Just behind them are Olivier, Roglic and Godoy.
He's been the surprise package in the GC so far but today is not a good day for Chiarello. He and Kritskiy are + 3'48 to Lecuisinier.
Lecuisinier ensures that tomorrow is somewhat less important as he opens up the gap to Sicard to 1'51. Hirt moves into the final podium places for now at + 2'58. Pluchkin is +3'40 in 4th and his team mate Choi is 7th at + 4'09. They will be engrossed in a battle with Eastman and Roglic who are 5th and 6th. All to play for in the lower Top 10 as Chiarello in 8th is only a second ahead of Olivier and 7 seconds ahead of Barguil.
No changes in all other classifications, except Pinot is now 2nd in the Points Classification although he'd be expecting to lose that to a few of the sprinters on the final day.
