Tour de France - Stage 18
Luis Leon Sanchez
le Tour de France - Stage 18 Report

After what was a fairly lackluster stage yesterday, today should be anything but. It is the penultimate Mountain stage of this year's Tour and features two monstrous climbs in the HC Col de la Madeleine and Col de la Croix de Fer. The riders have only 15km of riding at the beginning of the stage which are flat and then it's up and down for the rest of the day. After the 2 HC climbs, we have the Cat 2 Col du Mollard and we then descend down to the base of our final climb up to the line in La Toussuire - Les Sybelle. At only 144km in length, this is the one stage the sprinters will be worried about in hoping they are here for the final stage. But the real question is, will we finally see some dominance from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Pierre-Henri Lecuisinier?

It's another miserable day weather wise but we have 16 riders who have decided that getting out front is the best way to go about this one. Some familiar faces in here but some others who haven't been particularly active showing their face as well.

Multiple riders from the breakaway finding themselves in trouble with still 10km of the Col de la Madeleine to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Higuita and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Tolhoek unlikely to be ahead of the Peloton for much longer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%2018/PCM0002.jpg

Meanwhile, numerous riders already dropped by the Peloton. It's going to be a long 110km for these riders who could really struggle to make the time limit today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%2018/PCM0003.jpg

Not for the first time in this Tour, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Inkelaar is the first through the KOM and stretches his lead out further as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Bennett is 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%2018/PCM0004.jpg

Just taking a moment to appreciate the beautiful scenery over the top of la Madeleine with snow falling!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%2018/PCM0005.jpg

The front group on the road is now only 7 riders who came back together on the descent. They have a group of 5 a further 1'32 back and the 101 man Peloton a further 1'54 back. We are now at the base of the 23km climb up the Col de la Croix de Fer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%2018/PCM0006.jpg

11km of the climb remaining for the Peloton and the work from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Mapei means the gap between the leaders and out 64 man Peloton is down to only 1'25.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%2018/PCM0007.jpg

5km later and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Mapei have decided the onus isn't on them to set the pace. The gap to the leaders has grown back to 3 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%2018/PCM0008.jpg

At the front, we are down to a trio of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Bennett, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Aular and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Bongiorno with still 3km of climbing to the top of this one.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%2018/PCM0009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Bennett is the first over the top!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%2018/PCM0010.jpg

Coming over the top, the Peloton is down to 25 riders. All of the Top 20 in the GC are here of further up the road having been involved in the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%2018/PCM0011.jpg

We reach the top of the Category 2 climb with 36km to the finish which is a descent followed by the final climb. We now only have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Aular and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Bennett on their own. Their gap is 1'07 to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Bongiorno and then it's the reduced Peloton a further 1'30 back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%2018/PCM0012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Kritskiy (9th in GC) is distanced by the other GC riders on the descent which is testament to his ability going downhill. It'll be tough for him to re-join.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%2018/PCM0013.jpg

With the support of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Novikov, he is able to join the back of the group on the lower slopes of the climb to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%2018/PCM0014.jpg

Still 14.5km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Yates (13th @ 4'38) goes on the attack. He has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Godoy (15th) for company.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%2018/PCM0015.jpg

These 2 join up with the front 2 on the road to make a leading group of 4 with 11.5km to go. The Peloton over a minute back is led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png De la Cruz.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%2018/PCM0016.jpg

6km to go for the 15 man Peloton and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Eastman (10th @ 2'49) is the next to launch an attack. This should provoke some reactions!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%2018/PCM0017.jpg

The reaction comes from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Sicard (2nd @ 48"). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier seems to be relying on his team mate but really needs to take control of this one himself!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%2018/PCM0018.jpg

We briefly had a front group of 6 but then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Eastman goes again with 2.5km to the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%2018/PCM0019.jpg

900m for our front 5 and one of these should be looking at a stage win. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier is behind them and finally on the charge.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%2018/PCM0020.jpg

It hasn't been the best race for the Kiwi but he is rewarded for his aggression today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Bennett is our stage winner.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%2018/PCM0021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Sicard is 2nd but he'll be thinking about the GC gains.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%2018/PCM0022.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Eastman is 3rd while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Godoy is 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%2018/PCM0023.jpg

A fast finishing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier is 5th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Yates.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%2018/PCM0024.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Barguil leads through the next group containing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chiarello, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Olivier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Hirt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Aular.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%2018/PCM0025.jpg

Another gap then to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Roglic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Kritskiy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Choi.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%2018/PCM0026.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Pinot is the biggest loser of those near the Top 10, paying for his efforts on earlier days.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%2018/PCM0027.jpg

We have our first riders on a stage this year to fail to make the time limit of 1'04'20.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Korsaeth + 4'24.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Scully + 7'00.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Frame, current Lantern Rouge + 13'04.

Well, Wow. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier holds onto the Yellow Jersey by a single second ahead of his countryman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Sicard. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chiarello is outside 1 minute again but remains in 3rd with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Roglic holding onto 4th as well. The big gain today coming from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Eastman who jumps from 10th up to 6th!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%2018/PCM0028.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Demare has got the Points Classification all but won.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Inkelaar took yet another step towards winning the KOM today as his lead over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png O'Connor is 53 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Inkelaar lost almost 7 minutes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Aular but his gap is still 12 minutes in the battle for White.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Isostar - Specialized move back into the lead in the Teams Classification.
