le Tour de France - Stage 18 Report
After what was a fairly lackluster stage yesterday, today should be anything but. It is the penultimate Mountain stage of this year's Tour and features two monstrous climbs in the HC Col de la Madeleine and Col de la Croix de Fer. The riders have only 15km of riding at the beginning of the stage which are flat and then it's up and down for the rest of the day. After the 2 HC climbs, we have the Cat 2 Col du Mollard and we then descend down to the base of our final climb up to the line in La Toussuire - Les Sybelle. At only 144km in length, this is the one stage the sprinters will be worried about in hoping they are here for the final stage. But the real question is, will we finally see some dominance from Pierre-Henri Lecuisinier?
It's another miserable day weather wise but we have 16 riders who have decided that getting out front is the best way to go about this one. Some familiar faces in here but some others who haven't been particularly active showing their face as well.
GC KOM Geoghegan Hart 14th @ 14'43 Bongiorno 16th Inkelaar 17th 1st @ 150 Bennett 18th O'Connor 19th 3rd @ 105 Aular 25th Tolhoek 6th @ 57 Koshevoy 7th @ 46 Higuita Rybalkin Tvetcov Schlegel Pedrero Vingegaard Boonratanathanakorn Lastra
Multiple riders from the breakaway finding themselves in trouble with still 10km of the Col de la Madeleine to go. Higuita and Tolhoek unlikely to be ahead of the Peloton for much longer.
Meanwhile, numerous riders already dropped by the Peloton. It's going to be a long 110km for these riders who could really struggle to make the time limit today.
Not for the first time in this Tour, Inkelaar is the first through the KOM and stretches his lead out further as Bennett is 2nd.
Just taking a moment to appreciate the beautiful scenery over the top of la Madeleine with snow falling!
The front group on the road is now only 7 riders who came back together on the descent. They have a group of 5 a further 1'32 back and the 101 man Peloton a further 1'54 back. We are now at the base of the 23km climb up the Col de la Croix de Fer.
11km of the climb remaining for the Peloton and the work from Mapei means the gap between the leaders and out 64 man Peloton is down to only 1'25.
5km later and Mapei have decided the onus isn't on them to set the pace. The gap to the leaders has grown back to 3 minutes.
At the front, we are down to a trio of Bennett, Aular and Bongiorno with still 3km of climbing to the top of this one.
Bennett is the first over the top!
Coming over the top, the Peloton is down to 25 riders. All of the Top 20 in the GC are here of further up the road having been involved in the breakaway.
We reach the top of the Category 2 climb with 36km to the finish which is a descent followed by the final climb. We now only have Aular and Bennett on their own. Their gap is 1'07 to Bongiorno and then it's the reduced Peloton a further 1'30 back.
Kritskiy (9th in GC) is distanced by the other GC riders on the descent which is testament to his ability going downhill. It'll be tough for him to re-join.
With the support of Novikov, he is able to join the back of the group on the lower slopes of the climb to the finish.
Still 14.5km to go and Yates (13th @ 4'38) goes on the attack. He has Godoy (15th) for company.
These 2 join up with the front 2 on the road to make a leading group of 4 with 11.5km to go. The Peloton over a minute back is led by De la Cruz.
6km to go for the 15 man Peloton and Eastman (10th @ 2'49) is the next to launch an attack. This should provoke some reactions!
The reaction comes from Sicard (2nd @ 48"). Lecuisinier seems to be relying on his team mate but really needs to take control of this one himself!
We briefly had a front group of 6 but then Eastman goes again with 2.5km to the line.
900m for our front 5 and one of these should be looking at a stage win. Lecuisinier is behind them and finally on the charge.
It hasn't been the best race for the Kiwi but he is rewarded for his aggression today. Bennett is our stage winner.
Sicard is 2nd but he'll be thinking about the GC gains.
Eastman is 3rd while Godoy is 4th.
A fast finishing Lecuisinier is 5th ahead of Yates.
Barguil leads through the next group containing Pluchkin, Chiarello, Olivier, Hirt and Aular.
Another gap then to Roglic, Kritskiy and Choi.
Pinot is the biggest loser of those near the Top 10, paying for his efforts on earlier days.
We have our first riders on a stage this year to fail to make the time limit of 1'04'20.
Korsaeth + 4'24.
Scully + 7'00.
Frame, current Lantern Rouge + 13'04.
Well, Wow. Lecuisinier holds onto the Yellow Jersey by a single second ahead of his countryman, Sicard. Chiarello is outside 1 minute again but remains in 3rd with Roglic holding onto 4th as well. The big gain today coming from Eastman who jumps from 10th up to 6th!
Demare has got the Points Classification all but won.
Inkelaar took yet another step towards winning the KOM today as his lead over O'Connor is 53 points.
Inkelaar lost almost 7 minutes to Aular but his gap is still 12 minutes in the battle for White.
Isostar - Specialized move back into the lead in the Teams Classification.
