le Tour de France - Stage 9 Report

A much shorter stage at only 143km but this could be problematic for some of those less able in the Mountains when it comes to making the time limit. The stage opens up with the Cat 1 Col de Mente but the real stand-out of the day is the HC Port de Bales which is crested 33km before the finish. The riders then descend this climb before making a jagged 2 step climb up to the finish in Peyragudes.
It would be no surprise to see a breakaway succeed here again but it may also be the first stage that the GC Favourites decide to take control.

Just before we start the opening climb and we once again have a 20 man breakaway with 13 different teams. No pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Bardet here to defend his KOM lead but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png O'Connor, currently 2nd, is here in an attempt to move a bit closer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Tesfom, Girdlestone
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Turek, McKenna
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Furdi
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Koshevoy, Sepulveda
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Denz
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png O'Connor
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Dina, Pereyra

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%209/PCM0001.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Pereyra wins the KOM at the top of the Col de Mente. No points for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png O'Connor who was dropped part of the way up the climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%209/PCM0002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Furdi wins the Cat 3 KOM sprint. The front 12 here have a gap of 2'30 to the 118 man Peloton who have kept a much higher pace today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%209/PCM0003.jpg

55km to go and the 12 man group has a gap of 1'49 to a 93 man Peloton. The pace is high as the Peloton is about to start the climb up the Port de Bales.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%209/PCM0004.jpg

Still 46km to go on the stage and 13km to the top of this climb and the 69 man peloton is within a minute of the 10 man breakaway which is well in their sights.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%209/PCM0005.jpg

Interesting attack from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Inkelaar who is already catching the remnants of the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%209/PCM0006.jpg

4km to the top of the climb for the Peloton where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Festina have been setting the pace but it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Choi who launches the first real attack from the GC Favourites.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%209/PCM0007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier drags everyone else up and we now have a lead group of 31 riders with 2.4km still to climb and 35km left in the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%209/PCM0008.jpg

1km to the top and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Roglic launches the next attack!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%209/PCM0009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Roglic is first over the KOM but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier is too strong and is going to be on his wheel in no time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%209/PCM0010.jpg

We had a 13 man leading group for a few meters but it's then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Choi who launches an attack on the descent with 24km to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%209/PCM0011.jpg

16km and we start the final 2 part climb with the situation like this:
Leading Group of 13

+ 56

9 riders including: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Yates, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Godoy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Eastman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Bennett, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Denift, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Kritskiy

+ 39"

4 riders including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Pinot.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%209/PCM0012.jpg

It's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chiarello who is the first to start the attacks at the front with 13km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%209/PCM0013.jpg

He is caught 1km later by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%209/PCM0014.jpg

He attacks again with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Olivier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Roglic for company. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier attentive again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%209/PCM0015.jpg

9km for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chiarello who has opened up a 25 second gap. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier leads the 2nd group and has only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Choi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Olivier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Roglic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Hirt for company.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%209/PCM0016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Barguil, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Sicard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin are struggling!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%209/PCM0017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chiarello still holding a gap with 3km remaining.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%209/PCM0018.jpg

As pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chiarello goes under the kite, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Roglic launches a late attack from the group behind!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%209/PCM0019.jpg

With only 500m to go, can pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Roglic steal a stage win from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chiarello?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%209/PCM0020.jpg

The answer to that is No! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chiarello took a chance, trusted his legs, and takes the stage win with a small gap to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Roglic.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%209/PCM0021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Choi is 3rd ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Hirt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Olivier finish with the same time at + 32".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%209/PCM0022.jpg

The next trio to come through are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Sicard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Barguil. They are + 1'13.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%209/PCM0023.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Godoy is 10th on the stage and leads through a group at + 2'28 including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Kritskiy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Eastman.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%209/PCM0024.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Bennett leads through the next group which contains pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Yates, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Pinot and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Denifl. This group loses big time as they are + 4'01.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%209/PCM0025.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Roglic moves into Yellow with a 20 second gap to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chiarello and 48 seconds to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier in 3rd who will now realise he has a battle on his hands.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%209/PCM0026.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Demare still in Green.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Bardet still in the Polka Dots.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Inkelaar back in White.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Gazelle now lead the Teams.
