le Tour de France - Stage 8 Report
In a complete contrast to yesterday, we begin Week 2 of le Tour de France with an absolutely brutal stage from Pau through to Bagneres-de-Luchon. The stage starts off with the incredibly tough Col d' Aubisque before the infamous Col du Tourmalet. It doesn't get any easier as the riders finish off with the Cat 1 climbs of the Col d'Aspin and the Col de Peyresourde prior to the 15km descent to the line. It's not often le Tour is won on the first Mountain stage but it's a great opportunity to assert dominance early on.
20km into this one and we have a breakaway of 20 riders!! Their gap already at 4'25. 13 teams with representation including Puma who realise that Demare won't be in Yellow tomorrow.
O'Connor
Hagen, Bardet
Sirironnachai, Mohoric
Main
Sagiv
Tolhoek, Rodriguez
Nikiema
Valter
Velasco, Bettiol
Destribois
Tratnik, Peters, Konrad
Crncevic
Mager, Egger
At the base of the Col d'Aubisque and the Peloton, led by the sprinters, is already more than 7 minutes behind the breakaway.
There is snow falling at the top of the Col d'Aubisque as the breakaway has been torn apart by the pace of the better climbers. Konrad wins the KOM.
Bardet is 2nd just ahead of a quartet led by O'Connor. The gap between these front riders and the Peloton is well over 15 minutes!!
The breakaway is restored to 13 riders on the descent towards the intermediate sprint at the base of the Col du Tourmalet. Their gap back to the Peloton is about 17 minutes.
Everyone but Sagiv is back in the lead group which makes it a 19 man breakaway. Their official gap is now 16'38.
O'Connor puts the hammer down in the breakaway this time around and wins the KOM ahead of Bardet who stretches his lead out to 38 points.
54km remaining in the stage and 9km of the Col d'Aspin still to climb but we now have a front group of only 4 riders. There remains 16 riders between them and the Peloton but their gap to the Peloton itself is still at around the 15 minute mark.
Bardet is the strongest as he and O'Connor bridge the Col d'Aspin with 45km still to go.
27km to go and the peak of the final climb of the day is 12kms away but we have a front group now of 12 riders. Many of whom will not only be thinking about how to win the stage but one of these 12 will also be our new GC leader given their gap back to the Peloton is still 14'26.
Bardet wins the final KOM of the day and now has a 15km descent to try hold off those behind him to win the stage.
6km left for Bardet who holds a 36 second gap and is well on his way to a glorious stage win here!
And indeed it is a truly superb stage win for Bardet! He'll be a very popular stage winner with the local fans!
Rodriguez is 2nd ahead of O'Connor in 3rd and Egger in 4th.
Valter rolls through on his own for 5th.
Bettiol outsprints Tolhoek for 6th. The Italian could well be leader of the Tour after today's stage.
Today's Top 10 rounded out by Destribois, who could be our new 2nd, Mager and Tratnik.
The 56 man Peloton is led in by Goos who is 17th on the stage. They come in 13 minutes and 29 seconds behind Bardet.
A massive shake-up in the GC after the first Mountain stage but not how many would have predicted it. Bettiol is the new race leader with Destribois in 2nd and Bardet in 3rd. The Top 9 all from today's breakaway with Roglic and Lecuisinier 10th and 11th, currently 8 minutes behind.
Bardet can not only celebrate a stage win but also a 50 points lead in the King of the Mountains.
Demare still leads the Points.
Valter now leads the U25s by almost 6 minutes.
Puma-SAP now lead the Teams by 2 seconds.
