Tour de France - Stage 8
Luis Leon Sanchez
le Tour de France - Stage 8 Report

In a complete contrast to yesterday, we begin Week 2 of le Tour de France with an absolutely brutal stage from Pau through to Bagneres-de-Luchon. The stage starts off with the incredibly tough Col d' Aubisque before the infamous Col du Tourmalet. It doesn't get any easier as the riders finish off with the Cat 1 climbs of the Col d'Aspin and the Col de Peyresourde prior to the 15km descent to the line. It's not often le Tour is won on the first Mountain stage but it's a great opportunity to assert dominance early on.

There is snow falling at the top of the Col d'Aubisque as the breakaway has been torn apart by the pace of the better climbers. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Konrad wins the KOM.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%208/PCM0003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Bardet is 2nd just ahead of a quartet led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png O'Connor. The gap between these front riders and the Peloton is well over 15 minutes!!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%208/PCM0004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png O'Connor puts the hammer down in the breakaway this time around and wins the KOM ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Bardet who stretches his lead out to 38 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%208/PCM0007.jpg

54km remaining in the stage and 9km of the Col d'Aspin still to climb but we now have a front group of only 4 riders. There remains 16 riders between them and the Peloton but their gap to the Peloton itself is still at around the 15 minute mark.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%208/PCM0008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Bardet is the strongest as he and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png O'Connor bridge the Col d'Aspin with 45km still to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%208/PCM0009.jpg

27km to go and the peak of the final climb of the day is 12kms away but we have a front group now of 12 riders. Many of whom will not only be thinking about how to win the stage but one of these 12 will also be our new GC leader given their gap back to the Peloton is still 14'26.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%208/PCM0010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Bardet wins the final KOM of the day and now has a 15km descent to try hold off those behind him to win the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%208/PCM0011.jpg

6km left for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Bardet who holds a 36 second gap and is well on his way to a glorious stage win here!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%208/PCM0012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Bettiol outsprints pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Tolhoek for 6th. The Italian could well be leader of the Tour after today's stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%208/PCM0016.jpg

Today's Top 10 rounded out by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Destribois, who could be our new 2nd, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Mager and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Tratnik.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%208/PCM0017.jpg

The 56 man Peloton is led in by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Goos who is 17th on the stage. They come in 13 minutes and 29 seconds behind Bardet.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%208/PCM0018.jpg

A massive shake-up in the GC after the first Mountain stage but not how many would have predicted it. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Bettiol is the new race leader with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Destribois in 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Bardet in 3rd. The Top 9 all from today's breakaway with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Roglic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier 10th and 11th, currently 8 minutes behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Bardet can not only celebrate a stage win but also a 50 points lead in the King of the Mountains.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%208/PCM0020.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Demare still leads the Points.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Valter now leads the U25s by almost 6 minutes.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Puma-SAP now lead the Teams by 2 seconds.
