Tour de France - Stage 3
Luis Leon Sanchez
le Tour de France - Stage 3 Report

After the uphill finish of yesterday, we return to a flatter finish today which should be a sprint to the line, similar to the opening stage. An opportunity perhaps for another sprinter to wear the Yellow Jersey?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%203/Stage%203%20Profile.png

The Peloton has been very strict on the numbers of riders in the breakaway on the previous 2 stages and no changes to that today as only 2 are given the freedom. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Hindley wins the only KOM of the day ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Brkic. 2'50 gap with 125km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0001.jpg

With 4 points to fight for from the Peloton, the sprinters and their teams are well positioned as they approach the intermediate sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0002.jpg

Up front, it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Brkic who takes the 10 points as he outsprints pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Hindley.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0003.jpg

He hasn't been able to win a stage yet but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Demare is the best in the Peloton for 4 points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Houle takes 2 and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Scully takes a single point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0004.jpg

70km to go and our leading duo have a gap of 2'24 which has been coming down consistently since after the sprint point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0005.jpg

The work, once again, of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Aegon, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Puma-SAP and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png MOL has brought the gap down to a minute with 30km still to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Brkic survives slightly longer but is swept up by the onrushing Peloton with 9km to the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0007.jpg

4km to go and MOL lead the Peloton for Lo Cicero on the left hand side. The pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Puma-SAP train has got itself organised for Demare who has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Houle on his wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen left without much support but just ahead of Demare.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0008.jpg

2.2km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Denz is leading us. He has his sprinter, Groenewegen, on his wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Steimle is actually leading out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Houle from the looks of it who has Aregger next to him. Their leader, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Demare, is instead back next to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Lo Cicero and just ahead of the other sprinters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0009.jpg

It's messy with 1.7km to go as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Demare looks for the wheel of his team mates. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Houle is just behind him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen is just ahead of the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png MOL duo of Kalf and Lo Cicero.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0010.jpg

As we go under the kite there are two clear trains. The pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Puma one, led by Aregger, is well ahead at the moment and this line of riders look best placed to win this one.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Aregger
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Demare
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Houle
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Kalfpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Lo Ciceropcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Cavendish
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Ackermannpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kamberaj
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Stepniak

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Demare breaks off with 600m to go as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Houle does the same. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen coming through the middle.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Demare still leading pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Houle with 200m to go but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen is moving faster, as are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Lo Cicero and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kamberaj.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0013.jpg

And it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenwegen who wins this one with a relatively large gap in the end.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0014.jpg

It's tight for 2nd but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Ackermann, who left it late, just pips pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Houle. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Lo Cicero is 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Stepniak 5th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Demare 6th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kamberaj is then 7th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Houle is the new GC leader level on time with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kamberaj and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/TourdeFrance/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen the new Points Leader.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Bobridge still in the KOM lead.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Brkic, with the time bonuses today, moves into the U25s lead.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Project: Africa still lead the Teams.
