Scandinavia Open Road Race - Stage 3 Report
We're already at the final stage here in Sweden and it's going to be a tough one as there are plenty of uphill sections throughout the 195km. Lopez looked strong yesterday but will need to be at his best given some of the time gaps in the Top 10. The larger gaps to the likes of Skujins and Mohoric could prove to be difficult to manage if we see some early attacks too.
As expected, a 16 man breakaway gets away early and had a 3'29 lead. The closest to the GC is + 4'45. In here are:
Bernas
Vliegen
Krizek
Gallopin
Van Heerden, Lecourt
Schappi, Jacobs, Goncalves, Abreu
Afonso
Hofer
Goh, Rachid, Bagioli
Dowsett
Still 143km remaining but the gap for the breakaway is out to 5'18.
Good battle at the 2nd Cat 2 as Afonso wins it. Van Heerden with a 16 point gap to the next rider in this group. The gap is down to 4'30 with 105km still to go.
Vliegen wins the next KOM and moves to 10 points off the lead with a Cat 3 and a Cat 2 still to come.
75km to go, the front group down to 11 and their gap is just under 3 minutes.
Bernas wins the KOM but it's Van Heerden in 2nd who stretches his lead which should confirm the KOM win for him. The gap is within 2 minutes now.
40km and the Peloton, led by Sauber, has brought the gap down to a minute.
The final KOM sprint and Van Heerden is 2nd which means a KOM win for him.
Under the 20km to go banner and the breakaway is caught. The Peloton is down to 65 riders.
14km and the latest hill has seen the front group reduce down to 26 riders. Prado is the only Top 10 rider missing.
Gidich accelerates at the front with 10km to go. Lopez is one of those on his wheel.
5km to go and it's a leading group of 25 as we approach the final climb.
The attacks come instantly with 4km to go, it's Gidich and Yates who kick us off. Lopez is attentive though!
2.5km and these 6 looking the strongest. Going to be difficult for anyone to create much of a gap here unless they find some real strength.
It's Lopez who puts the foot down further with 1.5km to go. A real show of power from the GC Leader!
Under the kite and Lopez hasn't quite got away but he's still got a gap to the 5 behind him.
500m and Sagan looking the best here as he catches up to Lopez.
But 300m to go and it appears Lopez has found a second wind!
And there is no match for the Colombian!! Lopez makes it back to back wins in a real show of dominance!
Yates cements his 2nd in the GC with 2nd here! Sagan is 3rd. Gidich holds on for 4th ahead of Tenorio and De Bie.
10 riders are given the same time. Dennis then comes through in 11th having lost time.
Faglum Karlsson is down in 17th and will lose out in the GC where he was 7th.
With 2nd on the opening stage and then 2 stage wins, it's of no surprise that Miguel Angel Lopez wins the GC here in Sweden. A very good performance from the Colombian who was one of the top favourites coming into it.
Adam Yates is 2nd after finishing 3rd and 2nd on the 2 hill stages.
De Bie is 3rd ahead of Sagan.
Gidich pips his countryman, Lutsenko, to the final Top 5 spot.
Tenorio did enough to hold onto a good GC result after a dominant Prologue as he is 7th.
Spilak, Dennis and Dunbar were all rather anonymous but they round out the Top 10.
Lopez wins the Points classification ahead of Yates.
Eddie Van Heerden with a well-earned KOM win.
Gidich is the best U25 rider.
Generali wins the Teams Classification.
