UPPSALA CLASSIC - PREVIEW
Uppsala, situated 71 km north of Stockholm, is home to Scandinavia’s largest cathedral, Uppsala Cathedral, which until the 19th century was the site of the coronation of the Swedish monarch. The MG circuit will crown a rider here as well, the winner of the Uppsala Classic, and this particular victory will send that one cyclist into history pages as this is the first edition of the race.
The 194.3 km of Uppsala Classic are all flat and although some small bumps might be glimpsed on the profile the bookmakers favor heavily the sprinters for the win. The race will start from Uppsala and head towards Alsike where it turns back towards Uppsala. Before reaching Uppsala again the peloton will cross the Flottsund Bridge over the Fyris River, close to where it flows into Ekoln, part of the Lake Mälaren, and then follow the river to the initial starting point. This circuit of approximatively 38 km will be covered 5 times before the winner will be decided at the finishing line in Uppsala.
Categorized as C2HC and with a mandatory presence for the Continental teams required by the MG organizers means that all the 3rd division teams are here. None others are joining them, but this hardly takes away from the glory to be had and the boasting right of winning the first edition of Uppsala Classic. But who will take that place in history? The sprinter field is packed, as it is only suited, so let’s look at the list of favorites:
| | FL | STA | RES | SPR | ACC | Vanderbiest | Romain | 73 | 72 | 67 | 81 | 75 | Appollonio | Davide | 74 | 71 | 66 | 81 | 78 | Jakobsen | Fabio | 74 | 75 | 73 | 80 | 80 | Nelson | Ricki | 71 | 69 | 63 | 80 | 80 | Kristoff | Alexander | 72 | 70 | 66 | 80 | 74 | Bouhanni | Nacer | 74 | 74 | 69 | 80 | 77 | Krieger | Alexander | 71 | 71 | 74 | 79 | 79 | Drapac | Damion | 70 | 68 | 63 | 79 | 77 | Ciolek | Gerald | 71 | 67 | 63 | 79 | 73 | Bennett | Sam | 71 | 74 | 68 | 79 | 79 | Meyer | Cameron | 71 | 68 | 63 | 79 | 74 | Vingerling | Michael | 71 | 72 | 66 | 79 | 79 | Keough | Luke | 73 | 67 | 73 | 79 | 79 | Matthews | Michael | 76 | 72 | 67 | 79 | 79 | Colbrelli | Sonny | 74 | 74 | 72 | 79 | 75 | Selig | Rüdiger | 71 | 73 | 68 | 79 | 81 | Boivin | Guillaume | 74 | 74 | 70 | 79 | 80 |
The list is crowded as we can easily see, but if this season proved something to the fans it’s that a sprint finish doesn’t guarantee a win to the top favorites. As a matter of fact it also proved that team tactics, motivation and internal fighting for the leading role can alter the predictions and what is considered a second tier rider might jump on the occasion and grab the win. Is this scenario possible here in Sweden?
| | FL | STA | RES | SPR | ACC | Wippert | Wouter | 70 | 75 | 70 | 78 | 82 | Losch | Max | 73 | 72 | 68 | 78 | 79 | Liepins | Emils | 73 | 73 | 68 | 78 | 79 | Bogdanovics | Maris | 73 | 74 | 69 | 78 | 77 | Bauhaus | Phil | 74 | 71 | 65 | 78 | 75 | King | Ben | 75 | 73 | 71 | 78 | 73 | Thwaites | Scott | 73 | 74 | 70 | 78 | 76 | Marin | Gabriel | 74 | 73 | 73 | 78 | 78 | Ovsyannikov | Alexandr | 72 | 74 | 72 | 77 | 76 | Naesen | Oliver | 75 | 77 | 73 | 77 | 76 | Cimolai | Davide | 74 | 74 | 68 | 77 | 77 | Berger | Hakon Frengstad | 73 | 72 | 68 | 77 | 77 | Stash | Mamyr | 73 | 68 | 73 | 77 | 77 | Walscheid | Maximilian | 71 | 70 | 72 | 77 | 77 | Prasad | Darshana | 74 | 73 | 74 | 77 | 79 | Sbaragli | Kristian | 76 | 76 | 70 | 77 | 78 | Ranneries | Christian | 69 | 66 | 63 | 77 | 80 | Weber | Sascha | 72 | 72 | 67 | 76 | 75 | Philipsen | Jasper | 70 | 70 | 68 | 76 | 76 | Andersson | Emil | 71 | 74 | 73 | 76 | 76 | Ratto | Daniele | 79 | 74 | 66 | 75 | 73 | Korosec | Rok | 71 | 74 | 71 | 75 | 78 |
It would be a mistake to forget that predicting the final outcome of a cycling race is nothing like shooting fish in a barrel and there’s a certain possibility for some brave riders to steal the victory from the heavily favored. A successful breakaway or a daring attack on the final kilometers cannot be discarded and there are several riders who could seize such an opportunity if such a chance presents itself. Is such a scenario in the cards here?
| | FL | STA | RES | SPR | ACC | FHT | Losch | Max | 73 | 72 | 68 | 78 | 79 | 78 | Orue | German Anibal | 69 | 77 | 70 | 53 | 58 | 78 | Kuznetsov | Vyacheslav | 76 | 75 | 73 | 72 | 75 | 76 | Haas | Nathan | 71 | 76 | 72 | 68 | 73 | 76 | Hacecky | Martin | 66 | 69 | 74 | 65 | 73 | 76 | Van Winden | Dennis | 71 | 65 | 65 | 56 | 67 | 76 | King | Ben | 75 | 73 | 71 | 78 | 73 | 75 | Hecht | Gage | 68 | 70 | 70 | 67 | 69 | 75 | Lunder | Eirik | 68 | 74 | 66 | 67 | 72 | 75 | Muhindo | Jimmy | 70 | 70 | 68 | 64 | 63 | 75 | Shevchenko | Oleksandr | 69 | 71 | 73 | 61 | 67 | 75 | Richardson | Chequan | 71 | 68 | 68 | 60 | 61 | 75 |
104 cyclists from 40 countries will line-up at the start of Uppsala Classic, the bulk being made by European riders, 73, and 3 are from Africa, 3 from Asia, 12 from North America, 8 from Oceania and 5 from South America. The best represented countries are Germany and Norway with 7 riders, followed closely by Australia, Belgium, Italy and USA with 6 riders. There are 5 national road champions at the start, Alexandr Ovsyannikov (Kazakhstan / Aramco DP), Joshua Edmondson (Great Britain / BNZ-Superhero Racing), Jimmy Muhindo (DR Congo / BNZ-Superhero Racing), Alexander Krieger (Germany / Crabbe-CC Chevigny) and Joanis Albert Nielsen (Faroe Islands / Strava). There are sixteen 22 year old riders on the starting list, with the youngest being Thymen Arensman of Gjensidige Pro Cycling Team, while at the other side of the spectrum there are two 35 year old cyclists, with the oldest being Roger Kluge of Strava. The highest payed rider is Matteo Jorgenson of Volcanica – Fox (on loan this season from Zwift Pro Cycling) with a wage of 200,000, while 9 cyclists are on an amateur contract, Sander Andersen (Tafjord Kraft), Julian Cardona (Aramco DP), Gerald Ciolek (Eddie Stobart), Damion Drapac (Eddie Stobart), Martin Hacecky (Pas Normal Studios – Mikkeller), Cristofer Robin Jurado (Volcanica – Fox), Cameron Meyer (Glanbia Foods Cycling Project), German Anibal Orue (BNZ-Superhero Racing) and Stan Van Tricht (Crabbe-CC Chevigny).
The race will be broadcasted by PCM Daily TV with the commentary of the prestigious reporter Nemolito.

Fantastic preview.
I fear another Rás here with too many sprinters spoiling the broth for Glanbia but it's all a bit random so maybe one of them can take a top 5
Good luck all

Great pre-race read that! Thank you very much for the preview
Looking forward to this one! Hopefully it comes down to a sprint but from there it's praying that our team puts together a good train and brings home the result for Jakobsen who has to be one of the top favourites.
Good luck to all

Thanks for the very comprehensive preview. Good to see Hecht and Van Winden popping up in the third section.
Got a strong flat team here so hopefully we can control the attacks and Keough can put in a decent sprint and win the Swedish lottery.

Thank you, sounds like a race where one of our three sprinters could strike gold again if we have some luck

What the hell was that? (and I don't just mean the Britney references!)
But also woo hoo! Haas delivering another surprise and Nelson bringing home the bunch.
By far, Glanbia's best pprd race of the year!

Wow, race of the season perhaps? At least in CT
Very exciting racing, pretty rare for a flat one. I wouldn't want this as part of a stage race if it has potential for big gaps, but it works great as a classic

Congrats to BWT Hyundai N Cycling on a great win.
Love the intro to the report Nemolito! Hell'a funny!
For us, you know it was not a good race when the lead-out guy is the best placed rider in 12th..

Too bad that BWT got away with a sneaky late attack but congratz. Amazing sprint by Sbaragli, really has been putting in some top notch performances for us. Thanks for the nice report!

That was really unexpected - two wins in a row. This will be a morale boost for the team after not so great start.
Thanks for the report
