Hello to all and welcome to the Apex Mountain Classic. A 230 km mountain classic with some nice names on its victory list. 6 smaller mountains before the riders head onto the Apex Mountain, and if nobody can get away uphill, they could still try to sneak away in the final downhill section.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Apex/pics/ap02.jpg

Quite a large group, of fifteen riders, forming the break of the day. We have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ccc.png Lietaer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png O'Loughlin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Leemreize, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Noppe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Rutsch, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/voy.png Rajapakshage, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Bohli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Jurado, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Potocki, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/esc.png Malacarne, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pns.png Charmig, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Landa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Rivera, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pns.png Hellemose and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Covi.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Apex/pics/ap03.jpg

Second climb of the day, as the domestiques of Jura, Carlsberg, Aker, Tryg and some others keep the gap at less than 4’ wth 170 km to the finish line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Apex/pics/ap04.jpg

Right before reaching the top of the fourth climb of the day and with less than 100 km to go, domestique pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Potocki is the first to be dropped in the leading group. The leading group won’t get too far though, as a peloton of 128 riders is already at less than a minute!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Apex/pics/ap05.jpg

The peloton doesn't want to make the catch too soon either. The gap stays around a minute, as the leading group of now ten riders reaches the penultimate top of the day before starting their ascent of the Apex Mountain. As can be seen on the profile, there is also a smaller uphill section before the climb really starts. Most of the work in the peloton meanwhile being done by cycleYokshire, Carlsberg and Jura.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Apex/pics/ap06.jpg

The break stood no chance, as Polar’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Carpenter makes the catch with 40 km to go, only a couple of km before a peloton of 85 heads onto the mythical Apex Mountain!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Apex/pics/ap07.jpg

36 km to go, as we are on the Apex Mountain! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Nerz has an early flight to catch, and immediately attacks! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Carapaz tries to follow!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Apex/pics/ap08.jpg

None of the domestiques was able to close the gap, so it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer now with the counter, he seems to be closing the gap towards the Kraftwerk leader in no time!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Apex/pics/ap09.jpg

He does indeed, and so do pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Penasa! In the group of 17 behind them, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Quintana attacks in the hope of joining the leading group as well!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Apex/pics/ap10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Nerz feeling good, he attacks again! Only the Carlsberg rider currently able to follow him!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Apex/pics/ap11.jpg

We’re around halfway the Apex Mountain as the two chasers become nine! The nine with a 30” gap to bridge over our two leaders are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Penasa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Quintana, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/voy.png Shikai, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Denifl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Carapaz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Schelling, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Wellens and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Carthy! At an additional 40” we find pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/akm.png Galta and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Latour.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Apex/pics/ap12.jpg

A strong pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Wellens brings everyone except pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Carthy to the head of the race, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Nerz immediately accelerates again!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Apex/pics/ap13.jpg

Right before the final part of the climb there is a small descent, and it’s enough to see the first ten split into two groups of five riders! The first group exists out of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Nerz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Wellens, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/voy.png Shikai and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Quintana!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Apex/pics/ap14.jpg

Everybody is too tired or scared to try and get away or bridge the gap! The two groups of five reach the top with a gap of 25”! A long descent to go now, around 20 km, as it looks like a sprint of five will decide the winner of the 2021 Apex Mountain Classic!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Apex/pics/ap15.jpg

The gap remained the same for over 10 km, but as soon as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Quintana takes the lead in the descent, the five chasers are able to come back! 6.5 km to go and still ten riders able to win the Apex Mountain Classic!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Apex/pics/ap16.jpg

1.5 km left and the riders can see the finish line in the distance! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Quintana in the lead, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Wellens and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/voy.png Shikai the first riders behind him!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Apex/pics/ap17.jpg

The sprint starting with 700 meters to go, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer seems to be making the most speed!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Apex/pics/ap18.jpg

The Dane builds himself a nice gap, but here comes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Apex/pics/ap19.jpg

The Ukrainian is no match for the Carlsberg rider though! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer wins the Apex Mountain Classic ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun (2nd), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Nerz (3rd) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Wellens (4th)!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Apex/pics/ap20.jpg

The rest of the top-10 is completed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Schelling (5th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/voy.png Shikai (6th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Quintana (7th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Penasa (8th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Carapaz (9th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Denifl (10th).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Apex/pics/ap21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Latour then eleventh ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/akm.png Galta (12th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Carthy (13th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pns.png Aru (14th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Arndt (15th).
