Stage 8 Report

The final stage of the Dauphine takes the riders 183k with a finishing climb to the SuperDévoluy ski resort. But the hardest climb comes early in the stage, the famous Alp d’Huez (14k at 8.3%). After that HC climb there is a Cat 2, a Cat 1, a Cat 3 and the climb to the finish which is also rated Cat 3 and is just 3.8k at a 6.3% average.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Phinney in only 3rd on the favorites list but he will be expecting to confirm his GC win and perhaps grab the KOM and/or the points jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/favs.jpg

About 10k gone, a group of four have 1’30 and 5 more are at 50 seconds, but Zwift, Festina and Grieg aren’t represented so they are chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/01.jpg

The chasing worked and Festina and Grieg get riders off the front. Now an 11-rider lead group has 2’03 but another 12 riders trying to join them. 14k to Alp d’Huez.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/02.jpg

The lead group is on the Alp. It has swelled to 15 riders with another 8 about to join. The peloton over 2 minutes behind now so this looks like the break of the day. Full composition in both groups is:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Ciccone, Sergent, Zardini
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Bongiorno, Grmay
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Eg, Warbasse
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Crncevic, Tvetcov
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Ioannidis
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Dennis, Dyball, Keinath, Oliveira
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Lastra
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Conti, Rodriguez
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Parra Bustamente
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Fung
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Fabbro, Quintana
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Kämna
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Intxausti

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/03.jpg

Conti best placed in the KOM, in 2nd, while Keinath is highest in the GC in 16th, at 6’47.

Still 8.5k to go on the climb for the breakaway and Conti is dropped, he was in the very first breakaway group and is paying for that. He needs to stay away to the top to keep his KOM hopes alive. Sergent and Fung were dropped earlier.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/04.jpg

4k to go and more strong riders dropped from the break, including Keinath. A lot of them paying for the work they did to get into the break. Just 9 left up front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/05.jpg

1.7 k to go Rodriguez and Crnevic had got a gap but they went too early and now a group with Dyball, Dennis and Ciccone is going by them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/06.jpg

Rodriguez recovers and burst past the others, but still 1k to go, a real slugfest between the break on this first climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/07.jpg

And its Ciccone who manages his energy best and takes the points at the top of the climb solo. There are enough points available that he could win the jersey today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/08.jpg

The peloton is 138 riders at 7’12, none of the breakaway have been caught yet but they are all over the climb. The next climb comes quickly but then there will be an opportunity for regrouping.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Ciccone holds off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Rodriguez and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Dyball. To win the Cat 2. The same order as the prior climb, all 3 of these riders are within striking distance of the KOM lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/09.jpg

91k to go as the break starts the Cat 1 Col d’Ornon (10.5k at 6.2%). The lead group is back to 9 with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Grmay, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Crncevic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Tvetcov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Dennis, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Parra Bustamente able to rejoin the front 3. 6 more riders at 38 seconds. The peloton is at 4’49 and has 92 riders, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Denifl, who has a very tough race, is in a group 2’04 behind the main peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/10.jpg

7k to climb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Fabbro trying to drag the 6-man chase group back to the front. The gap is 23 seconds and he is getting no help because all the other teams in the group are already represented up front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/11.jpg

2.5k to go and Ciccone attacks with Rodriguez on his wheel. Meanwhile the 5 of the riders from the chase group are able to reach the main breakaway group, they are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Zardini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Eg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Keinath, and the Mapei duo of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Fabbro, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Quintana.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/12.jpg

Ciccone and Rodriguez prove the strongest in the group again, they take 1st and 2nd. The Aegon rider has the virtual KOM lead. Peloton is at 4’49. Amaysim, EA and Gazelle have been working

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/13.jpg

65k to ride, the front group is back to 14 riders, a long flat section now before the final 2 climbs. The 49-rider peloton is at 3’25 with Isostar also working now. Highest placed rider dropped is 18th placed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Brown.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/14.jpg

The breakaway rolls through the sprint point. With the lead up to 3’48. Only EA seem really motivated to chase so the lead not coming down as they are out of fresh riders. 40k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/15.jpg

Ahead the breakaway has reached the last climb (the Col du Noyer, 11.7k at 6.6%) other than the finishing climb. Gazelle now working seriously in the peloton and the lead is down to 2’49.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/16.jpg

17k to ride, 6.6k left in the climb for the peloton and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Kudus attacks.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/17.jpg

Phinney has no helpers left but there are plenty of other teams who need to protect their GC position. Gazelle one of those, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Geoghegan Hart, doing the chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/18.jpg

The breakaway is in sight as Kudus is caught and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Tenorio leads a counter attack. Many of the other GC riders following.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/19.jpg

An elite 11 rider group goes clear, all of the top 10 in that group except pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Reis who looks in trouble.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/20.jpg

Morton, Phinney and Kudus get a gap aheadof the other attackers. The breakaway group is almost caught. Still 4k to climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/21.jpg

As the trio catch the break the next group is also able to join making it 20 riders in the first group. In addition to Reis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen (8th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chiarello (9th) are missing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/22.jpg

A lull allows those two to rejoin but then Morton attacks with Phinney on his wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/23.jpg

Kudus just about able to reach the two attackers. Tenorio tries but fails. The front 3 have 28 seconds over a 20 rider chase group being led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Eg.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/24.jpg

700 meters to go on the climb and Phinney asserts his dominance, dropping first Kudus and then Morton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/25.jpg

Phinney crosses the top alone, just 10.5k left, a short downhill and then the finishing climb. He has 24 seconds over Morton and 42 seconds over a now 12-rider chase group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/26.jpg

The full situation looks like this.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/S8sit1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Ciccone maintains a 7-point lead in the KOM which means he has that jersey locked up for Aegon.

Over the top the chase group splits and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Madrazo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Tenorio are among the 5 riders gapped. With Reis dropped Madrazo has a good gap over 5th but his chances of moving over up to the podium are reduced.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/27.jpg

Phinney starts the last climb with a 24-second lead. Morton caught by the Kudus group. Another 31 seconds back to the Madrazo group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/28.jpg

2k to climb, Phinney’s lead is just 12 seconds as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Kritskiy leads the chase. The Russian needs to be careful he has just an 9 second edge over Morton for 2nd. The chase has swelled to 18 riders as the Madrazo group and another group with breakaway riders have rejoined. Only top 10 riders missing are Reis and Chiarello.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/29.jpg

1k banner and Phinney is caught. It will be a mountain sprint; he is probably still the favorite but how much energy has he used?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/30.jpg

Soon after 6 riders including Madrazo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Stüssi (10th on GC) are dropped. Madrazo can’t lose too much time or Tenorio and Kudus could pass him in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/31.jpg

500 meters and Kudus opens the sprint with Kritskiy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer closet to him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/32.jpg

100 meters and Guldhammer surges to the front, he has kept his powder dry all day and has been supported by his teammates from the break in the latter kilometers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/33.jpg

Another memorable victory for Carlsberg in what has been a magical season for the team.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/34.jpg

Kudus takes 2nd. Morton edges Kritskiy for third but the time bonus won’t be enough to change their GC positions (by 1 second). A great, measured ride by the Tinkoff rider who was not a favorite to podium.

Tenorio 5th, followed by Phinney and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Dyball. The American won’t be thrilled with the finish of this stage but he wins the GC easily and he scores enough points to take the points jersey. Dyball is the best finisher from the break.

Three more breakaway riders complete the top 10: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Quintana, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Ciccone and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Rodriguez.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/35.jpg

All the top 10 get the same time. Wirtgen, who will win the White jersey takes 11th, 27 seconds down.

Madrazo struggles home in 15th, he loses 1’11 and drops to 6th, he loses two positions in the last kilometer of the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S8/36.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Reis has a worse day than Madrazo, loses 2’39 and drops from 5th to 8th. Chiarello drops out of the top 10 to 11th while Guldhammer’s great day redeems a poor race and moves him into 9th in the GC.

Generali with all their breakaway riders put 4 riders in the top 20 and win the teams jersey.
