Stage 7 Report

Stage 7 of the Dauphine is rated hilly. But the hills aren’t that big and they come a long way from the end, so maybe the sprinters can hold on. Or perhaps everyone takes a day off and the breakaway wins. Another short stage at 140k.

The stage favorites are mix of sprinters and puncheurs with some GC riders thrown in

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/favs.jpg

About 15k in and 9 riders have come together at the front with a lead just over 2 minutes. They are: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Bongiorno, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Habtemichael, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Oliveira, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Narvaez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Ferreyra, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Ringheim, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Sütterlin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Tanfield, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Yechezkel. A fair number of KOM points today but none of these riders has any so far.

Behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Velasco and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Cherkasov are trying to bridge across.

The peloton shuts down the latter two. With 81k to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Ringheim wins the first climb, a Cat 4, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Oliveira and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Bongiorno. The peloton hasn’t let the lead go much above two minutes and right now it is 1’33 with Aegon, Moser and MOL contributing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/01.jpg

72k to go as the break turns on to the main climb of the day, the Cat 1 Cold du Barioz (7.9k at 6.4%). The lead still 1’31, Mapaei and Carlsberg also chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Yechezkel dropped early in the climb and is almost back in the peloton. MOL’s sprint team on the front of the peloton at the moment so the hard chasing might not last long.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/03.jpg

2k to climb for the leaders. Only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Bongiorno, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Oliveira, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Narvaez, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Ringheim left up front. Only a few riders chasing so the lead has increased to 1’44.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Narvaez takes the points solo ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Bongiorno, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Oliveira.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Bertilsson leads the peloton over with the lead up to 2’45. There is a descent and then a Cat 2 climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/06.jpg

3k to the top of the Cat 2, the front 3 back together with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Ringheim just behind. The peloton at 2’28 with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Habtemichael and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Ferreyra in between. The rest of the break has been caught.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Narvaez drops the other two again and takes maximum points at the top. 52k to go, Just a Cat 4 climb left, then it is mostly flat and downhill to the finish. The peloton at 1’25.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Bongiorno takes 2nd, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Cink and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Bazhkou come out of the pack to take 3rd and 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/09.jpg

1k to the final Cat 4 climb, 47k left in the stage. The two attackers have joined Narvaez and Bongiorno at the front. The lead is 53 seconds. The rest of the original breakaway riders have been caught. The peloton is down to 41 riders with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Ludvigsson (13th) the highest ranked victim, but he is in a big group just behind that could well rejoin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/10.jpg

The two counter-attackers drop their tired companions and take the points at the top. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Cink first.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/11.jpg

35k to go for the peloton which is back to 83 riders including Ludvigsson. The 4 leaders are back together but their lead is down to 26 seconds. Doesn’t look like it will be a day for the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/12.jpg

28k to go and the break is over although pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Cink is giving it another try. Quite a few sprinters still in this group including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Grosu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Bewley. Biggest name dropped is probably pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen. Not surprisingly pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Koretzky is still in the front group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/13.jpg

Cink can’t get away and there are no further attacks. The group, now down to 75, reaches the 10k banner intact. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Harrison and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Hofstetter are now near the front of the group, although the latter has been working on the front, so not clear Evonik’s strategy. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Trondsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Novardianto are also in the group but right at the back, they might not have the energy for a sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/14.jpg

4k to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Conti and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Rodriguez going to the front for Grosu. Other riders up front include Harrison, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png van der Poel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Cavagna.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/15.jpg

1k to go, it looks like it will be Grosu versus Bewley as the Huski and Mapei dominate the front. On the right barrier are the last domestiques, just inside and behind them are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Grosu on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Van der Kooij’s wheel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Bewley on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Grosser’s wheel. Then the Aegon pair of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Zardini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Denz. GC riders behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/16.jpg

600 meters pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Grosu ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Bewley. The other two up front still are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Rodriguez and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png van der Poel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/17.jpg

200 meters and Grosu still has the edge. The Gazelle rider sprinting is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Kruijswijk, the Amaysim rider is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Hindley.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Grosu gets it. His ability to survive the climbs pays off today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Bewley 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Zardini shows he has a little turn of speed to take 3rd. The rest of the top 10 are:
4. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Kruijswijk
5. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Hindley
6. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Denz
7. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Goos
8. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png van der Poel
9. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Narvaez
10. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Kudus

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S7/20.jpg

No changes in the GC. Bewley gets back the points lead as consolation for finishing 2nd. Bazhkou, Cink and Narvaez move into 4th, 6th and 7th in the KOM competition. They will be able to take a run at the jersey tomorrow. No changes in the other jerseys.
