Tour of South Africa - Stage 5 Report

If any stage is going to test our new GC leader and provide an opportunity to those who lost out yesterday, it's going to be today's. At 217km, it's a proper test of endurance while the constant hills provide the perfect terrain for the pure hill riders to attack and threaten the GC Top 10.

Still a very long way to go but the nature of this stage being a circuit means we have a large crowd who get to see the riders again and again. Our breakaway is 11 riders and they have a 3 minute lead at this point.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/sva.png Moschella, Palini
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Aasvold, Ziesler, Arensman

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/SouthAfrica/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0001.jpg

Uncontested KOM which sees pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/sva.png Palini rolls through in first.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/SouthAfrica/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0002.jpg

160km remaining for the breakaway as their lead is 5'20 and growing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/SouthAfrica/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/sva.png Palini wins the KOM again which moves him to 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/SouthAfrica/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0004.jpg

The Peloton is managing the gap now as it's back under 4 minutes with 100km to go in the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/SouthAfrica/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Liphongyu is the benefactor of the gentleman's agreement at the 3rd KOM of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/SouthAfrica/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0006.jpg

Good cohesion within the breakaway means they still have a 3'16 lead with 50km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/SouthAfrica/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0007.jpg

Starting to see gaps appear in the Peloton as the pace is increased. Whether or not these will become more frequent or if everything will re-join is not yet clear.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/SouthAfrica/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Liphongyu wins the final KOM of the day as well which moves him up to 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/SouthAfrica/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0009.jpg

34km and the now reduced Peloton is still 3'00 behind the breakaway which is down to 7 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/SouthAfrica/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0010.jpg

19km now to go and our "Peloton" is down to only 14 riders!! The hills are causing chaos and some strong riders are being caught out by what can only be poor positioning. Those not in this group don't look likely to make it back. We are down to:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Siskevicius, Dyrnes
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Kelderman
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/akm.png Laengen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Bobridge, Seibeb
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Skujins
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Paulinho, Valls, Bartl
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Moscon
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Izagirre
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bns.png Edmondson, Bevin

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/SouthAfrica/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0011.jpg

Meanwhile, we are down to only 4 riders at the front. It's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bwt.png Sakalou, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Ziesler (+ 2'26), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mck.png Boswell and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Liphongyu (+ 2'27). It's looking very likely that the stage winner will come from this group as their current gap is around the 2'30 mark.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/SouthAfrica/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0012.jpg

13km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Skujins attacks the "Peloton". Those in closest pursuit are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Bobridge, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Kelderman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Dyrnes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/SouthAfrica/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0013.jpg

11km for the leaders and it went down to 2 over that last hill as it's only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Ziesler and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mck.png Boswell.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/SouthAfrica/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Skujin's attack was snuffed out but then he joins pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Kelderman who is the next aggressor.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/SouthAfrica/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0015.jpg

At the front there are only 6km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mck.png Boswell has attacked his Norwegian companion and it on his way down to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/SouthAfrica/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0016.jpg

Good co-operation between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Kelderman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Skujins. The Dutchman is eyeing the GC lead as their gap over the nearest chasers is 51 seconds!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/SouthAfrica/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0017.jpg

An incredible effort from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Ziesler who has caught back up to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mck.png Boswell with 2.3km to go! It'll be a fight between these 2 for the stage win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/SouthAfrica/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0018.jpg

The sprint is on and they're neck and neck with only 500m to the line!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/SouthAfrica/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0019.jpg

And it's a stage win for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mck.png Boswell who had more left in the tank than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Ziesler who has to settle for 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/SouthAfrica/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0020.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Liphongyu holds on for 3rd but only just.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/SouthAfrica/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Skujins is 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Kelderman is 7th.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/sva.png Palini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bwt.png Sakalou are 5th and 6th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/SouthAfrica/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0022.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Bobridge leads through the next trio in 8th with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Dyrnes 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/akm.png Laengen 10th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/SouthAfrica/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0023.jpg

The next group on the road includes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Siskevicius pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Paulinho, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Izagirre and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Moscon.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/SouthAfrica/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0024.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Eiking, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/akm.png Bravo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Brandle end up more than 4 minutes behind the stage winner.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/SouthAfrica/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0025.jpg

In the GC, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/akm.png Laengen takes the jersey off his team mate and has a small buffer going into tomorrow to try and maintain. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Bobridge, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Kelderman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Dyrnes are within 2 seconds of each other and will all be looking to take the GC tomorrow. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Ziesler somewhat takes over leadership within his team as his efforts see him move to 5th!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/SouthAfrica/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0026.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Skujins now leading the Points.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bwt.png Robov still in the KOM jersey.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Girdlestone now best U25.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Zalgiris extend their lead in the Teams.
