Criterium du Dauphine Libere
Stage 6 of the Dauphine is the first, and easier, of the two remaining mountain stages. A couple of small climbs and then the finishing climb to Valmorel. Just 137k in total.
Phinney took control of the race yesterday and is the favorite to extend that today.
The breakaway reaches the base of the first climb, which is a Cat 3, with 24k gone. They have just 33 seconds as Generali and EA are not happy with this make up and have been chasing in the peloton. The 8 away at the moment are Conti, Bazhkou, Sulvaran, Affini, Laporte, Sütterlin, Schlechter, and Frison.
1.5k to go Conti has pulled away from the rest. Laporte and Schlechter dropped, the peloton back to 1’53.
Conti takes the points at the top, 40 seconds ahead of the rest.
Bazhkou and Sulvaran take 2nd and 3rd.
95k to go and the front 7 back together, only Laporte unable to rejoin. He is at 2’25 with the peloton at 4’17.
Schlechter takes the points at the first Cat 4. The lead is 6’54 with 70k to go the break might be winning this one. Sulvaran closest on GC, over 13 minutes down, so no threat there.
Laporte still 1’33 behind. One more Cat 4 and the finishing climb the only obstacles left.
Bazhkou takes the points at the next Cat 4. 29k to go, the lead is over 10 minutes.
Sütterlin was distanced over the top but is able to get back on. Laporte still in no-man’s-land.
With 22k to go Evonik begin to work in the pack, the lead back down just below 10 minutes.
The break reaches the final climb, 13k to go and immediately Sütterlin attacks.
Sütterlin’s attack drops Schlechter but then the German himself is dropped by the others. 11.4k to go.
10.5k to go and Bazhkou has 14 seconds on Sulvaran and Affini and 30 seconds on Conti and Frison. On paper the Huski rider is by far the best climber, he will need to work his way back to the front.
Sure enough, within 1k Conti is back with Bazhkou. The peloton is on the climb now with Amaysim on the front, the lead is 9’01.
12.6k to go for the peloton and Yates and Tenorio attack. The FarFetch rider is well back but the peloton won’t want to give Tenorio much room.
Storer, with a little help from Phinney, shuts down the attack in the peloton.
Up front Sulvaran has attacked Affini and is trying to bridge across to the front two.
Tenorio and Yates, this time joined by Guldhammer, attack again, and have built a 26 second gap.
9k to go for Tenorio who along with Guldhammer has caught Laporte (he will be glad to have company after riding the stage mostly on his own). Their lead is 43 seconds but still 158 riders in the peloton so it seems unlikely this will stick. Yates has been dropped and is back in the pack.
The leaders have 6k to go, Sulvaran just 8 seconds behind the front two. Tenorio is at 8’03.
Under 5k to go. Agony for Sulvaran as he never quite caught them and now they are riding away from him. Situation in the peloton about the same.
7k to go for the peloton, Malecki has been trying to close down the attackers but their lead was growing so Madrazo takes things into his own hands. The peloton down to 54, a few top 20 riders like Dennis (14th) and Kämna (17th) are dropped.
3.4k to go for the leaders and Bazhkou can no longer stay with Conti, the Italian quickly opens up 21 seconds.
5k banner for Tenorio and Guldhammer. Their lead is 43 seconds. Vlasov now chasing.
Morton attacks, Phinney closest to him.
Under 4k for Tenorio as he drops Guldhammer, but the gaps are small. Morton 34 seconds behind the MOL rider but only 14 seconds ahead of the peloton, which is down to 48 riders.
Conti can see the 1k banner. His lead is 1’12, he is going to win the stage.
3k to go and Phinney closes down Morton and turns the chasing over to Madrazo, only Tenorio left ahead of the GC attackers. But the forcing has split 11 riders off the front. Top 11 accounted for except for Wirtgen and Ludvigsson.
2k to go for the Yellow Jersey group. Tenorio still holding a 56 second lead over them. GC 10th placed Stüssi has been dropped. White Jersey and GC 2nd Wirtgen really struggling and already 1’09 behind this group which drops him out of the top 5.
Meanwhile, Conti has won the stage, apologies, the cameraman missed that shot. Two stage wins for Huski.
Bazhkou takes 2nd, 1’45 behind, a nice ride for the Xero man who has struggled of late.
Behind Chiarello (11th) and Pinot (23rd) have been dropped from the main chase group.
A good day for Curaçao as Sulvaran completes the stage podium at 3’24.
Affini takes 4th at 3’54.
Tenorio is the next man on the road but with 500 meters to go his lead over the chase group is down to 23 seconds. Wirtgen is now over 2 minutes down and could drop out of the top 10.
Tenorio takes 5th at +5’27. Phinney and Madrazo sprinting behind.
Madrazo holds off the American for 6th with a gap of just 7 seconds to Tenorio. 8 seconds later the rest of the top 10 are Reis, Kudus and breakaway survivor Schlechter.
Morton and Kritskiy are next. The former on the same time as the Reis group while Kritskiy loses 14 more seconds.
Phinney’s GC lead is now 1’08. Kritskiy does just enough to hold off Morton for 2nd. Madrazo just another 9 seconds back in 4th. Just 23 seconds separate 2nd to Reis in 5th. Tenorio up to 6th. Wirtgen drops to 8th and Ludvigsson to 13th.
Phinney adds to his points lead and takes over the KOM by 1 point from Conti.
Wirtgen does hold on to the White Jersey while Gazelle is now the team jersey leader.
