Stage 6 Report

Stage 6 of the Dauphine is the first, and easier, of the two remaining mountain stages. A couple of small climbs and then the finishing climb to Valmorel. Just 137k in total.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Phinney took control of the race yesterday and is the favorite to extend that today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/favs.jpg

The breakaway reaches the base of the first climb, which is a Cat 3, with 24k gone. They have just 33 seconds as Generali and EA are not happy with this make up and have been chasing in the peloton. The 8 away at the moment are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Conti, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Bazhkou, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Sulvaran, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Affini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Laporte, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Sütterlin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Schlechter, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Frison.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/01.jpg

1.5k to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Conti has pulled away from the rest. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Laporte and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Schlechter dropped, the peloton back to 1’53.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Conti takes the points at the top, 40 seconds ahead of the rest.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Bazhkou and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Sulvaran take 2nd and 3rd.

95k to go and the front 7 back together, only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Laporte unable to rejoin. He is at 2’25 with the peloton at 4’17.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Schlechter takes the points at the first Cat 4. The lead is 6’54 with 70k to go the break might be winning this one. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Sulvaran closest on GC, over 13 minutes down, so no threat there.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/05.jpg

Laporte still 1’33 behind. One more Cat 4 and the finishing climb the only obstacles left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Bazhkou takes the points at the next Cat 4. 29k to go, the lead is over 10 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Sütterlin was distanced over the top but is able to get back on. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Laporte still in no-man’s-land.

With 22k to go Evonik begin to work in the pack, the lead back down just below 10 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/07.jpg

The break reaches the final climb, 13k to go and immediately pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Sütterlin attacks.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/08.jpg

Sütterlin’s attack drops pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Schlechter but then the German himself is dropped by the others. 11.4k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/09.jpg

10.5k to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Bazhkou has 14 seconds on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Sulvaran and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Affini and 30 seconds on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Conti and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Frison. On paper the Huski rider is by far the best climber, he will need to work his way back to the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/10.jpg

Sure enough, within 1k Conti is back with Bazhkou. The peloton is on the climb now with Amaysim on the front, the lead is 9’01.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/11.jpg

12.6k to go for the peloton and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Yates and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Tenorio attack. The FarFetch rider is well back but the peloton won’t want to give Tenorio much room.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Storer, with a little help from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Phinney, shuts down the attack in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/13.jpg

Up front Sulvaran has attacked Affini and is trying to bridge across to the front two.

Tenorio and Yates, this time joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer, attack again, and have built a 26 second gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/14.jpg

9k to go for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Tenorio who along with Guldhammer has caught pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Laporte (he will be glad to have company after riding the stage mostly on his own). Their lead is 43 seconds but still 158 riders in the peloton so it seems unlikely this will stick. Yates has been dropped and is back in the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/15.jpg

The leaders have 6k to go, Sulvaran just 8 seconds behind the front two. Tenorio is at 8’03.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/16.jpg

Under 5k to go. Agony for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Sulvaran as he never quite caught them and now they are riding away from him. Situation in the peloton about the same.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/17.jpg

7k to go for the peloton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Malecki has been trying to close down the attackers but their lead was growing so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Madrazo takes things into his own hands. The peloton down to 54, a few top 20 riders like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Dennis (14th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Kämna (17th) are dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/18.jpg

3.4k to go for the leaders and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Bazhkou can no longer stay with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Conti, the Italian quickly opens up 21 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/19.jpg

5k banner for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Tenorio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer. Their lead is 43 seconds. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Vlasov now chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Morton attacks, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Phinney closest to him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/21.jpg

Under 4k for Tenorio as he drops Guldhammer, but the gaps are small. Morton 34 seconds behind the MOL rider but only 14 seconds ahead of the peloton, which is down to 48 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Conti can see the 1k banner. His lead is 1’12, he is going to win the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/23.jpg

3k to go and Phinney closes down Morton and turns the chasing over to Madrazo, only Tenorio left ahead of the GC attackers. But the forcing has split 11 riders off the front. Top 11 accounted for except for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Ludvigsson.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/24.jpg

2k to go for the Yellow Jersey group. Tenorio still holding a 56 second lead over them. GC 10th placed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Stüssi has been dropped. White Jersey and GC 2nd Wirtgen really struggling and already 1’09 behind this group which drops him out of the top 5.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/25.jpg

Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Conti has won the stage, apologies, the cameraman missed that shot. Two stage wins for Huski.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Bazhkou takes 2nd, 1’45 behind, a nice ride for the Xero man who has struggled of late.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/26.jpg

Behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chiarello (11th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Pinot (23rd) have been dropped from the main chase group.

A good day for Curaçao as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Sulvaran completes the stage podium at 3’24.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/27.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Affini takes 4th at 3’54.

Tenorio is the next man on the road but with 500 meters to go his lead over the chase group is down to 23 seconds. Wirtgen is now over 2 minutes down and could drop out of the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/28.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Tenorio takes 5th at +5’27. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Phinney and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Madrazo sprinting behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/29.jpg

Madrazo holds off the American for 6th with a gap of just 7 seconds to Tenorio. 8 seconds later the rest of the top 10 are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Reis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Kudus and breakaway survivor pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Schlechter.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/30.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Morton and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Kritskiy are next. The former on the same time as the Reis group while Kritskiy loses 14 more seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Dauphine/S6/31.jpg

Phinney’s GC lead is now 1’08. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Kritskiy does just enough to hold off Morton for 2nd. Madrazo just another 9 seconds back in 4th. Just 23 seconds separate 2nd to Reis in 5th. Tenorio up to 6th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen drops to 8th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Ludvigsson to 13th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Phinney adds to his points lead and takes over the KOM by 1 point from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Conti.

Wirtgen does hold on to the White Jersey while Gazelle is now the team jersey leader.
