Tour de France - Stage 15
SportingNonsense
Another mountain stage
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/letourdefrance2009-147.png

Ruggero Marzoli went away solo on Km 0 and built up a big gap
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/letourdefrance2009-148.png

Weening, Vandevelde, Taberlay and Illiano later also went away before Jose Rujano went on a surprise early attack
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/letourdefrance2009-149.png

Maxime Monfort tried to follow and a short while later Alexandre Vinokourov attacked!
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/letourdefrance2009-150.png

Carlos Sastre was another high profile early attacker
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/letourdefrance2009-151.png

Marzoli led over the top.
+ 5'45 were Rujano and Weening
+8'00 was Vinokourov
+12'37 Sastre crossed the time (In 9th position)
+ 16'00 were the peleton

Rujano caught up with Marzoli on the Col de Croix de Fer
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/letourdefrance2009-152.png

Meanwhile in the peleton Frank Schleck is dangerously isolated in comparison to the strength in depth of the France Televisions team
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/letourdefrance2009-153.png

Rujano tops the climb
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/letourdefrance2009-154.png

Vinokourov was 2 and a half minutes later, Sastre 8 minutes later. Di Luca crossed at 11 minutes having attacked away towards the top. The peleton were a minute later. Rujano started the day 10'33 behind Schleck so is the current race leader on the road.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/letourdefrance2009-155.png

Drama in the descent as Rujano flattens himself
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/letourdefrance2009-156.png

He picks himself up but is now caught by Vinokourov
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/letourdefrance2009-157.png

On some occasions, the descent of the Col de la Croix de Fer is followed by a climb up Alpe d'Huez, but today we head up the Col de la Madelaine and down the other side to the finish.

Here is how things stand at the foot of the Madelaine:
E1: Rujano and Vinokourov
E2: Marzoli +1'20
E3: Weening +2'04
E4: Taberlay and Sastre +5'20
E5: Monfort +7'09
E6: Di Luca and Gustov +7'52
P: +9'55
A1: Group Evans +13'36

Kashechkin is the first to attack from the peleton
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/letourdefrance2009-158.png

Duarte, Pecharroman, Karpets, Zabriskie and Popovych all countered before the 3 podium contenders Gadret, Devolder and Schleck, made their moves, shortly followed by Mayo and Pluchkin
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/letourdefrance2009-159.png

Devolder was strong, he caught up the group of Di Luca, Gustov and Taberlay while Schleck could not
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/letourdefrance2009-160.png

Furhter up the mountain, Rujano has recovered well from his fall and now leaves Vinokmourov behind
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/letourdefrance2009-161.png

Schleck has Gadret and Mayo for company as they try to catch up with Devolder, who is also being aided by Di Luca and Gustov.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/letourdefrance2009-162.png

Behind them we have Karpets, Popovych, Pecharroman, Duarte, Kashechkin and Pluchkin
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/letourdefrance2009-163.png

Gadret closes the gap on Devolder's group as Mayo is dropped
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/letourdefrance2009-164.png

But how on earth is he doing this? Devolder attacks again! Gustov goes with him as they catch Weening, Di Luca is dropped
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/letourdefrance2009-165.png

Devolder presses on - are Schleck and Gadret making a mistake by letting Gustov and Di Luca relay?
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/letourdefrance2009-166.png

Almost forgotten, Jose Rujano really charged up the climb and crosses first
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/letourdefrance2009-167.png

Vinokourov now trails by 3 and a half minutes
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/letourdefrance2009-168.png

Another 3 and a half minutes later, Devolder crosses 3rd having just passed Sastre
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/letourdefrance2009-169.png

Schleck and Gadret have some work to do, they trail Devolder by a minute. Gadret is an excellent descender though and Schleck is also better than Devolder. In the background, Mayo has caught up with Di Luca and Gustov
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/letourdefrance2009-170.png

But the problems started for Schleck and Gadret once they caught Sastre. Sastre is a very poor descender and was for some reason allowed to take long relays while Schleck and Gadret just took short ones.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/letourdefrance2009-171.png

This is a huge error for Schleck and Gadret as while they are being slowed by Sastre, Devolder is performing the descent of his life. The gap between Devolder and Schleck/Gadret has shot up to over 2 and a half minutes - Devolder is also now less than a minute behind Vinokourov. 7km to go.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/letourdefrance2009-172.png

With all the action behind, lets not forget Jose Rujano who has quite simply dominated today's stage. On the attack for 190 of the 206km he has taken 127 KoM points and looks set to leapfrog a few riders overall. He wins his 2nd consecutive stage.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/letourdefrance2009-173.png

Vinokourov clings on for 2nd - but Stijn Devolder has been unbelievable. He almsot caught Vinokourov on the line, finishing on the same time. What a descent, and for that matter, what a climb too! He takes the yellow jersey - for good?
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/letourdefrance2009-174.png

Schleck and Gadrets group has descended so poorly that they are recaught by Di Luca, Gustov and Mayo (With Kashechkin and Duarte not far behind). They finish 6'17 behind Rujano (So at least they gained nearly 2 minutes on him in the descent) and 2'25 behind Devolder. Schleck loses the overall lead to Devolder, Gadret loses 3rd place overall to Rujano
