Criterium du Dauphine Libere
Stage 4 is the first mountain stage of the race. The main climb is the Cat 1 Col d’Allos with more Cat 1 points at the finish at Pra-Loup
The big guns are the favorites, they all have some time to make up on the race leader.
26km into the 159k stage, the peloton has no interest in a big break today, they have relentlessly chased the breakaway riders, only 4 left including the KOM leader, but looks like these guys are being brought back as well. Carlsberg the ones really pushing in the peloton
All that chasing just leads to a slightly larger group due to the counter attacks. And now the chasers appear to be relenting. With 124k to go in the race, and 5k to the top of the first climb, 5 riders are off the front with a 1’16 lead. They are: Kung, Rohendi, Cink, Ioannidis, amd Parra Bustamente. A few other still trying to make it across.
At the top Cink easily takes the points ahead of Rohendi and Kung. All the other attackers are back in the pack including KOM leader Wohler, seems like he will lose the jersey today. Parra Bustamente also distanced significantly; he was in the original breakaway group so spent a lot of energy.
100k to go, after a long chase Parra Bustamante was able to rejoin the break, but with Isostar, Carlsberg and MOL all chasing, the lead which was over 3 minutes for a while is down to 1’42.
At the Cat 3 Rohendi takes the points ahead of Kung and Ioannidis. He had 5 points at the start of the day so that is enough to give him the virtual KOM Lead for now. The break’s lead is back to 1’57
Kung wins the intermediate sprint. 80k to go and the lead is 1’56.
The next climb is a Cat 2 it is 15.6k at 4.6%.
3k to climb, only Rohendi and Cink left up front and the peloton is just on the other side of the hairpin, 57 seconds behind. Isostar making this stage hard for Phinney.
At the top Rohendi adds to his virtual KOM lead. Behind Svab and Denz have attacked out of the pack which has slowed on the climb and is now 2’44 behind.
50k to go for the front two, they are on the long gentle uphill that leads into the Cat 1 Col d’Alles (13k at 6%). Svab and Denz took 3rd and 4th on the last Cat 2 but haven’t quite been able to bridge across yet. The pack is at 2’42 with multiple teams on the front. Isostar have eased off.
11k to climb for the peloton on the Col d'Alles, Isostar again massing on the front with help from Gazelle and Tinkoff. Denz has been caught and despite getting within 11 seconds of the lead Svab never made it either and is going backwards now. The front two have 56 seconds.
6k to climb, the lead still 56 seconds but Svab has been caught and Rohendi is dropping Cink. Isostar seem to be out of riders and now it is Amaysim on the front.
Just under 5k to ride and Morton attacks with Phinney on his wheel. Still 100 riders in the peloton.
3.7k to go and Rohendi is caught by the attackers. Goos, Kudus, Reis and Kritskiy were able to join the first two. Malecki leading the chase behind.
1k to go, Phinney and Kudus have dropped the other 4 who are close to being caught by a 37-rider chase group.
Morton is able to bridge back up to the front two. Kritskiy at 19 seconds, a 14-rider group including the Yellow jerseys at 40 seconds. Most of the other favorites in that group although the White jersey is another 29 seconds back.
1k banner, Kudus is dropped, he is with Kritskiy at 15 seconds, the next group is 1 minute back. Both the two leaders need over 2’30 to take the GC lead.
Morton takes the points, the lead is 34 seconds over Kudus/Kritskiy and 1’20 over a 14-rider chase group with most of the rest of the favorites. But race leader Goos has dropped back to the 4th group which is 2’01 behind (same group as Wirtgen). The leader's jersey will likely change hands today.
5.4 to go for the leaders who are on the finishing climb to Pra-Loup (5.6k at 7.3%). Not much change on the descent, they have 44 seconds over the next two, 1’28 over the main chase group and 2’08 over the Yellow Jersey group.
3k to climb, Kudus has dropped Kritskiy and closed to within 36 seconds. Further back Yates and Chiarello have attacked the main chase group and have a small lead. Phinney started the day 28 seconds behind Morton in the GC.
Under the red kite they are still together. Kudus at 40 seconds, Kritskiy at 59 seconds. The chase group, where the attackers have been brought back, is at 1’24. The Yellow Jersey is at 2’16.
200 meters and they are going to sprint it out. Behind Madrazo and Reis are attacking the chase group. Goos has been dropped from what was the Yellow Jersey group, but Wirtgen who was on the same time at the start of the day, is still there.
Phinney is the better sprinter and has time to celebrate his win. Now they will have to see the times of others.
Kudus takes third (+1’01) while Kritskiy has almost been caught by the chasers behind. Kudus was only 1’10 behind to start the day so he is much closer to the GC lead.
Kritskiy (+1’31) holds off Madrazo (s.t) for 4th with Pinot 6th (+1’46). The Russian needs only 30 seconds to take the GC lead.
Yates, Chiarello, Stüssi, Tenorio and Reis get 7th to 11th, all on the same time as Pinot.
The White Jersey is in the next group and takes 14th behind Keinath and Ludvigsson. Guldhammer and Denifl can been seen behind, poor days for both of them. They are all on 2’31.
While the Goos cracks badly and finishes 24th on 4’26, perhaps he should have dropped back to help his teammate sooner.
Thanks to time bonuses Phinney did enough to move ahead of Wirtgen by just 3 seconds. Unfortunately for him he didn’t put enough time into some of his other competitors and he sits in 5th. Kritskiy takes the race lead by 3 seconds from Kudus, 8 seconds from Morton, 24 seconds from Stüssi and 28 seconds from Phinney. He may not have got the GC lead yet but Phinney knows that tomorrow’s 33k time trial should provide ample opportunity.
Bewley still leads the points. Rohendi did just enough to take the KOM lead, by 2 points over Morton. Wirtgen does hang on to the White Jersey while Generali takes the team lead.
