Tour de Suisse - Stage 7
Luis Leon Sanchez
Tour de Suisse - Stage 7 Report

At 151km, it's not the longest stage here in Switzerland but it's definitely one of the most brutal. The day starts with a Category 1 climb up the Col du Pillon before a decent flat section in the middle of the stage. It's then an ascent up to Montana Village, which is an HC climb, followed by a descent down to the beginning of the final climb up to the finish line in Leukerbad.

We hit the top of the Col du Pillon and it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Smith who wins the KOM sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Zakarin who further extends his lead in this classification to his nearest competitors.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%207/PCM0001.jpg

As the riders descend down to the flat roads again, we have an established breakaway of 8 riders who have a 3 minute lead back to the Peloton with 122km to go. In here are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.pngHiguita+ 1'59
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.pngZakarin+ 2'01
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.pngSmith+ 2'27
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.pngGanna+ 2'42
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.pngBoonrata+ 3'07
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.pngLemus Davila+ 6'12
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.pngMader+ 8'16
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.pngBernas+ 10'23

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%207/PCM0002.jpg

85km to go and the gap is at 2'08. The Peloton keeping the quite strong breakaway well within reach.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%207/PCM0003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Ganna wins the intermediate sprint in a 1 v 1 with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Zakarin. The Peloton has brought the gap down to 1'09 with still 52km to go and we're about to start our HC climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%207/PCM0004.jpg

10km to the top of the climb but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Taaramae has already asked Williams to set the pace on the front which is quickly bringing in the break and bringing suffering to the legs of the Peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%207/PCM0005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Williams pulls to the side and says that's enough for now. Only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Higuita and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Smith of the breakaway remain in front, with a 42 second lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%207/PCM0006.jpg

This is an attack from distance! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Choi goes for it with 5.5km to the top of the climb and still 39km to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%207/PCM0007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Choi is in the lead now having made his way past the 2 earlier escapees. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Carthy is the first main favourite to react with 1km to the top of the climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Godoy goes off in pursuit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%207/PCM0008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Choi is over the top of the climb and begins his descent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%207/PCM0009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Carthy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Godoy come through next about 30 seconds back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%207/PCM0010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Taaramae leads the next group on the road and understands this is on him as the main favourite. They're only 25 seconds behind the duo. This group has 22 riders, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk is in the group just behind this one.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%207/PCM0011.jpg

19km to go and we're about to start the final climb. Huge work put it on the front by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Smith means we have a leading group of 16 riders. The only main favourite missing is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Haig who is relying on his team mate, Lane, to close the 37 second gap between him and this front group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%207/PCM0012.jpg

Yes you are seeing this correctly! We have only just started this little mini climb and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Cattaneo is in trouble. Maybe the actual final climb will get him back into the action?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%207/PCM0013.jpg

10km for the leading group, now down to 14. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Roglic on the front keeping the pace high on the lower slopes of the climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%207/PCM0014.jpg

It's not looking good for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Haig or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Cattaneo here. The Australian has been working at the front for quite some time but can't close the 1 minute gap. It is worth noting that Yellow jersey, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk is in here so he's doing his best to hold onto that GC lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%207/PCM0015.jpg

5km and this is all that's left of the favourites group of 9 riders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Taaramae has taken over on the front. In order from him it's:

4km to the finish and it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Godoy who puts in the acceleration. This drops pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Sivakov and then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Masnada as well as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Berhane!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%207/PCM0017.jpg

3km now and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Roglic looks to be struggling along with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png De la Cruz.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%207/PCM0018.jpg

It flattens out for the finish as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Choi leads the quartet under the kite.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%207/PCM0019.jpg

The sprint between these 4 is started and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Godoy looks to have the best kick.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%207/PCM0020.jpg

And indeed it's a stage win for the Brazilian! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Godoy showed the aggression to drop some of the other favourites earlier on and he leads this group across the finish line. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Taaramae and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Carthy are 2nd and 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%207/PCM0021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Choi loses 18 seconds in the end but is through in 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%207/PCM0022.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png De la Cruz just beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Roglic in the battle for 5th. They're + 49".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%207/PCM0023.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Masnada is 7th (+ 1'18) while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Berhane rolls across the line in 8th, + 1'34 for the Eritrean.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%207/PCM0024.jpg

Strong effort from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Sivakov in 9th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Vasyliv is right on his tail. + 2'32 for them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%207/PCM0025.jpg

A small group comes over the line with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Haig who loses a huge chunk of time, + 3'06.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%207/PCM0026.jpg

It's an awful day for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Cattaneo who ends up in a group headed by Yellow Jersey, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk. + 4'29 for the Italian, that's his GC chances gone unless he can recover time tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%207/PCM0027.jpg

In the GC, it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Taaramae who takes the lead but it's a narrow margin to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Godoy. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Carthy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Choi well within striking distance. The gaps to the rest of the Top 10 aren't all that sizable either.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%207/PCM0028.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Houle holds onto his lead in the Points.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Zakarin leads the KOM by 16 points.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk still leads the U25s.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Evonik take over the lead in the Teams.
