Tour de Suisse - Stage 3

Tour de Suisse - Stage 3

At 175.7km, it's not the most testing of stages but it's certainly not your usual bunch sprint type stage. The first half is considerably more challenging than the 2nd, with 4 KOM sprints, and then the back half tails off a bit into a flat/downhill finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%203/Stage%203%20Profile.png

The favourites look to be those puncheurs who can put in a sprint although the impact of the Hills is hard to know. Late attacks on the 5th Cat 2 or the Cat 4 could prove fruitful to the more adventurous rider.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Zakarin is the first over the opening climb of the day. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Lammertink is 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Bernas 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0001.jpg

We reach the 2nd KOM and it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Zakarin again ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Lammertink. These 2 are the only escapees at the moment and have 3 minutes back to the Peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0002.jpg

130km remaining as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Van Hooydonck and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Bernas, who attacked at the last KOM to clean up the points, push themselves on to reach the leading duo at the base of the 3rd Cat 2 climb which is much longer at 9km.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0003.jpg

It's too easy for the Russian as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Zakarin makes it 3/3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Lammertink 2nd again and these 2 ride off together once more.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0004.jpg

Just checking in to say that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Bernas has re-joined the Peloton after his expedition out front. The front 3 are back together with a lead of 3'04 with 100km still to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0005.jpg

The Brunigpass is a nasty climb but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Lammertink keeps some in the tank to win the KOM sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Zakarin currently leading the classification with 38 ahead of 34 for the Huski man.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0006.jpg

83km left and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Van Hooydonck's time out front has come to an end. The remaining duo still with a 3 minute advantage to the Peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0007.jpg

Our two leaders do, for whatever reason, use their precious energy to contest the sprint. It's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Zakarin who wins it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0008.jpg

At the top of the Cote De Lager, still with 33km of racing in the stage, the front 2 have been swept up by the Peloton. It's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Kolar who takes maximum points on the final Cat 2 of the day. There is still a Cat 4 13km from the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0009.jpg

20km for the Peloton and no one actively looking to go solo at the moment.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Lienhard wins the final KOM of the day which is only a Cat 4. We have 13km to the finish and it should be relatively straight-forward from here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0011.jpg

4km now and it looks as if there are some "sprint" trains here but not too many proper sprinters at the front so it'll be mainly secondary sprinters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0012.jpg

Can't say I expected this! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk has decided on an attack as we hit the 3km mark. You'd have to think it'll be tough to make it stick but who knows!?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0013.jpg

Only 2kms now and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk is going for gold! He has a bit of a lead over the Peloton but the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Houle will soon be launching sprints of their own.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0014.jpg

Under the kite as the riders in the Peloton launch their sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk only has 600m to go so he could well hold on here!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0015.jpg

200m for the South African as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Houle and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Cerny are flying up the right-hand side!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0016.jpg

HE DOES IT. He doesn't have the time, nor energy, to raise his arms in celebration but the gutsy move paid off for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk who is a popular rider with Cycling fans around the World.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0017.jpg

Disappointment for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Houle who would have been hoping for a stage win as he settles for 2nd ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Cerny. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Guerreiro is 4th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Lienhard in 5th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0018.jpg

Top prologue riders such as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chavanne suffered today and lose their Top 10 GC spots but they all made it safely within the Time Limit. Other top 10 riders who dropped far down the GC are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Yatsevich, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Scotson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Vlatos.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Suisse/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0019.jpg

Some changes in the Top 10 but it's still pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Andersen who takes the Leaders jersey into Stage 4 where he should comfortably hold onto it for yet another day.
