Points if interest pro cycling cyclist

So I wonder , does the assigning of points of interest to next years teams have any purpose or is it just like manager satisfaction ie no use at all. I had a total green bar with the team I was riding for but did not get a contract. The 3 teams that offered a contract were all deep in the red zone.
