Riga - Jurmala GP

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/RigaJurmala/profile.jpg

Welcome to Latvia for 190 km of twisty technical roads that go throughout Riga and the surrounding area. We have grey skies today, but not rain yet and more importantly no wind to hinder the riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/RigaJurmala/PCM0001.jpg

As always a number of riders are looking to get in the breakaway, starting with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Lasinis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Kukrle and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Elosegui.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/RigaJurmala/PCM0002.jpg

Another bigger group of riders are getting involved. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Juodvalkis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Polnicky, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Klaris, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Fominykh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Otruba and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Landa.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/RigaJurmala/PCM0004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Menicucci, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png S. Mugisha, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Danacik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Bratashcuk and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Grand also join up. So a total of 14 riders!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/RigaJurmala/PCM0005.jpg

The breakaway builds up a 3 minute gap over the first 40 km as the rain has come.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/RigaJurmala/PCM0006.jpg

We have as many as 7 different teams contributing at the front of the peloton. As a result the breakaway's gap is kept in check and is under 3 minutes now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/RigaJurmala/PCM0007.jpg

This race is mainly flat with gentle undulations throughout. The breakaway goes now perhaps through the "hilliest" part of the course as they near the 50 km to go mark. The gap stands at 1'38''.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/RigaJurmala/PCM0008.jpg

The gap has fallen under 1 minute now with 35 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/RigaJurmala/PCM0009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Neilands finishes the job and brings things back together for the final 20 km.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/RigaJurmala/PCM0010.jpg

Last 10 km. There hasn't even been a sniff of an attack, but the pace is high. The peloton is stretched out, positioning will be important.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/RigaJurmala/PCM0011.jpg

3.5 km to go and well it's a mess isn't it? Indosat is at the front with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Howard staying back and marking pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Kennaugh. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen is up front actually ahead of lead out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png de Kleijn. A bit further back are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Silvestre, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Eislers, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Gaviria and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lph.png Manninen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/RigaJurmala/PCM0012.jpg

Yep, it's a total mess. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen way behind de Kleijn now and the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Binance train is an even bigger mess.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/RigaJurmala/PCM0013.jpg

Binance said: "The heck with it, we're going!". pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Kennaugh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Kennett are so close together it's impossible to figure out who's who? pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Silvestre and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen seem to be chasing with 2 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/RigaJurmala/PCM0014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Kennett falls back under the flamme rouge. Behind them on the other side of the road are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Silvestre and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Howard in the first 3 places.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/RigaJurmala/PCM0015.jpg

This is the group contesting the victory. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Gaviria and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Eislers are the furthest back. Then it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lph.png Manninen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Lo Cicero. The aforementioned three are still in front with  pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Kennaugh basically caught at this point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/RigaJurmala/PCM0016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lph.png Manninen takes the lead with 300 m to go. Can he hold on?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/RigaJurmala/PCM0017.jpg

Yes, he can! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lph.png Matti Manninen coming off his victory in Hanko, wins again!! He really likes the north of Europe.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi finishes very fast, but he needed the finish line to be a few meters further out. Then it was home favourite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Eislers who just edged out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Gaviria for the final podium spot.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/RigaJurmala/PCM0019.jpg

Assa Abloy changed their main sprinter for today and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Coutinho managed a fantastic 5th place for them. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Howard is 6th, he's done worse hasn't he. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Van der Sande, another surprise, manages 7th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen and his team got this one all as he salvaged 8th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Silvestre and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Kennaugh round out the top 10.
