Tour of Japan - Stage 5
We are in the penultimate stage here in Japan and it's the last one where we could see a GC shake up, unless disaster strikes tomorrow on the flat roads. It looks like it should favour the Puncheurs.
However, the bookies have gone for a different approach and put their money on some, but not all, of the Climbers with yesterday's stage winner and our current GC Leader listed as the Top Favourite. Maybe this will be an opportunity for some big GC moves! Let's find out. The final KOM day as well so there'll be another battle to follow.
Quite a few teams relieving themselves of any chasing duties as we have a 12 man breakaway but actually only across 6 teams as we have 4 from BNZ and 2 from 3 of the other teams. No one within 3 minutes of the GC lead though so fairly little concern to the Peloton.
Schultz, Gillett, Scott, Marryatt
Betancourt, Leknessund
Pantano Gomez, Huulgaard
Zordan
Gaspar, Kumara
Juul-Jensen
The first of 4 KOM sprints and Gaspar takes maximum points ahead of Juul-Jensen. He now has 6 points and he'll need 11 from the remaining 3 to win it. 130km and the gap now stretched out to 4'45.
No mistake from Juul-Jensen this time around as the Dane takes the 6 points ahead of Zordan. The Pas Normal rider moves to 10 points and needs 7 from the remaining 2 climbs.
It's been quite a leisurely pace up front though as the Peloton hasn't had to work too hard and the gap is down to 2'06 with still 95km remaining on the stage.
KOM sprint 3 and it's the same order as Number 2. Juul-Jensen just needs a point over the final KOM to win this outright as he goes level at the top now.
The final KOM and it's Gaspar who takes it… This means Juul-Jensen ends up equal with Quintana at the top of the KOM classification.
28km to go now and the leading group is down to 7. Their gap over the Peloton down to just over a minute.
As the Peloton crests this climb for the 2nd last time, they've been eroded down to 39 riders! Some riders definitely caught out by some poor positioning. The only Top 15 GC rider missing is Manfredi who was working on the front earlier.
16km remaining and we only have 5 riders now in the lead. They are 1'40 ahead of the small Peloton so there is definitely a stage win opportunity here.
Schultz attacks from the leading group and goes on his own!
Amezawa (25th@ + 3'22) then launches an attack from the Peloton.
10km to go for Schultz and he's 1'16 ahead of the now 5 man group behind him who are a further 38 seconds ahead of the Peloton. (Note: these others are all lapped riders)
6km to go and Amezawa off in pursuit of our lone leader.
We have 2 leaders now with 3.5km remaining. They have 37 seconds to a group of 4 earlier escapees and another 30 seconds to the 31 man Peloton.
Padun (5th@ + 1'11) attacks from the Peloton. Quintana is not in a good position to react!
1.3km to go and Amezawa leaves Schultz behind. He will have to hold out against the charge from behind.
Padun just ahead of the group that is now flying up the final climb led by Quintana himself!
Gaps opening up all over the place behind them as Warchol finds himself caught out…
500m now for Amezawa but Padun is very close to him now. Quintana also coming up quickly behind them.
200m and it looks like Amezawa will have the kick to hold on!
OH MY. He threw his hands up in the air to celebrate but he's had to put them back on the handlebars as he isn't there yet!!
AND HE JUST HOLDS ON! That's a very well-deserved stage win for Amezawa who makes it 2 wins for Japanese riders in their home tour. Padun is 2nd and will hope he can move higher than 5th in the GC.
Alarcon just pips Quintana for 3rd. But the Colombian has done enough here!
Bernal is 5th, Carthy 6th and Faglum Karlsson 7th.
Shikai is 9th and may have held onto 2nd depending on if any gaps are given ahead of him.
In the GC, it's still Quintana who leads it by 44 seconds ahead of Padun and Carthy. Shikai does drop down to 4th. Today's biggest losers though are Kennaugh who drops to 9th and Warchol who drops from 6th all the way down to 14th.
