Stage 2 is meant for the sprinters, but there are lots of sprint and KOM points on offer, so a lot for the breakaway to fight for.
Lietaer kicks off the attacks followed by Andersen and Taillefour.
The first attempt fails, but Lietaer and Andersen quickly go again.
Lietaer wins the first KOM sprint as we see his teammate Nareklishvili and Joeaar are also attacking from the peloton.
The 4 riders merge together into today's breakaway. They hold a 2'23'' gap.
Back in the peloton the teams doing the work are Volcanica, BNZ and Glanbia.
Lietaer is clearly the class rider in this breakaway as he secures another KOM. He needs one more to secure the jersey.
Joeaar is dropped from the breakaway as we reach the halfway point of the stage.
Nareklishvili drops away on the final KOM, but Lietaer completes his goal of taking the lead in that classification. Meanwhile the peloton is only around a minute behind now.
Lietaer holds the peloton at bay into the final 10 km. Now it's time for the sprint trains.
Positioning is important on this circuit and we see Volcanica and Glanbia are in prime position as they are at the front at the top of the final uphill section.
Here is the setup with 2 km to go:
Downey
Cruz
Villalobos
Le Roux
Bennett
Boivin
Kristoff
Ranneries
Wippert
Avelino
Abdul Halil
Boivin goes early with 1.2 km to go. Bennett bidding his time, but has to be careful he doesn't get boxed in.
Boivin leads with 700 m to go. The two lead outs nearest aren't a concern. All the other sprinters are a ways back still.
The Volcanica sprinter is still ahead with 400 m left. Everyone is still a bit too much behind, they might have misjudged this.
Yes!
Boivin wins it by a healthy margin, a win on home soil for the Canadian! Kristoff finishes 2nd, final podium spot goes to Bennett.
No changes in the GC as mostly everyone finishes on the same time as the winner.
