Tour of Norway - Stage 5 Report

It's the final stage here in Norway and it's a fairly long one at 198km. In terms of the difficulty, the bumps in the road probably aren't long or steep enough to cause any real trouble but hopefully we get some action.

The top 2 puncheurs failed to show yesterday due to bad positioning and actually lost time so hopefully they bring some energy to this stage. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Phinney would have hoped to move into the GC lead yesterday but he's still got today to try make up the time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Norway/Pics/Stage%205/Stage%205%20Favourites.png

155km remaining and we have a group of 7 who have got themselves a 3'17 gap which is still growing. The Peloton will need to be weary as there is some serious strength in here, including our KOM leader here to ensure his win.

120km still and the Peloton controlling the gap and keeping it around the 4 minute mark. The break does gain time on the hills but tends to lose on the flats and downhill sections.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Norway/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0002.jpg

The first of 2 KOM sprints and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Malecki wins it which takes him to 15 points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Poljanski gets 2nd which moves him to 19 points. It will come down to the last KOM sprint of the race in 30kms time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Norway/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0003.jpg

The breakaway passes through the finish line for the first time with 70km left in the stage. Their gap now 3'04.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Norway/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Malecki did all he could as he won the final KOM sprint but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Poljanski did what he needed to do and took 2nd which means a KOM classification win by 2 points ahead of his countryman.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Norway/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0005.jpg

50km for the breakaway and their lead down at 2'26.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Norway/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0006.jpg

32km and the Peloton is split!! Big time! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Buchmann is about 17 seconds ahead of this 28 man group driven forward now by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png De Bie. Importantly, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Wurtz is attached to the back of this group.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Fraile is the only Top 10 rider who is in the group 1 minute behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Norway/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0007.jpg

19km to go and it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Gidich who attacks from the front of what is now a 39 man peloton that has just about caught the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Norway/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0008.jpg

7km to go and it's all back together following further accelerations. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Wurtz riding like a man possessed as he remains in this front group of 19.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Norway/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0009.jpg

2km to go and, of all people starting the sprint, it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Wurtz!!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Norway/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0010.jpg

300m to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Wurtz still ahead but he went early. He has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Phinney and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Oliveira catching him fast!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Norway/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0011.jpg

It's very close between the Portuguese and the American on the line!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Norway/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0012.jpg

And it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Oliviera who wins the final stage here in Norway! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Phinney is 2nd while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Wurtz is 3rd which will be enough for him to win the GC here!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Norway/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0013.jpg

A mix of riders littering the Top 10 as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen is 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Dennis 5th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Vakoc and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Howard 7th (same result as the sprints for him Wink). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png De Bie then 8th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Malecki and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Pogacar. There are 18 in this lead group. All others will be losing time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Norway/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Dlamini (8th in GC) loses 47 seconds and will likely drop out of the Top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Norway/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0015.jpg

Disappointing for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Generali as Brown (11th) and Dyball (9th) are in a group 1'25 back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Norway/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0016.jpg

Bad to worse for them as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Oliveira is even further back. One of the big losers today as well, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Fraile in the same group losing 2'41. Although, on the plus-side, his team mate did win the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Norway/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0017.jpg

We couldn't complain with the action on show today but at the end of it all there is one man deserving of the plaudits and that is our GC Winner, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Wurtz who truly deserves this after a very strong TT and a courageous performance today.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Taylor Phinney will be disappointed not to have put more pressure on the Dane but he can still be happy with 2nd.
The final stage hero, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Oliveira, got the time bonus on the line to propel himself into 3rd.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen then 4th with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Generali duo Dennis and Kung 5th and 6th.
The rest of the Top 10 benefit from some dropped riders as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Penko moves up to 7th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Izagirre is 8th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/voy.png Salcone is 9th while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Cedevita make it 2 in the Top 10 with Pogacar.
Of the remaining favourites, he arguably deserved more from his aggression but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Gidich has to settle for 11th while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Fraile dropped all the way down to 17th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Dunbar was very poor in 32nd but some relief for Indosat as Howard managed 16th!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Norway/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Phinney wins the Points classification with change ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Wurtz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen. The best sprinter is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png AKA in 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Norway/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0020.jpg

As already mentioned during the stage, our KOM winner is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Poljanski but he was pushed all the way by an aggressive pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Malecki.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Norway/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0019.jpg

Further reward for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Oliveira as he is the best U25 rider.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Norway/Pics/Stage%205/PCM0021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Cedevita have won the Teams classification ahead of a strong pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Generali.
