Welcome to the 9th edition of the Tour of Vancouver. The Canadian stage race is as stage racey as it gets. The 7 day race starts with a short mountain time-trial where the pure stage racers get to show off their climbing and TT skills. The sprinters get 3 stages to shine and the climbers get two more mountain stages. The race ends with a flat 18.4 km team time-trial. So this is definitely the race for stage race specialists that love to climb and ride against the clock.
With that said let's look at some of the favourites:
| MO | HI | TT | RS | AC | PR | Mas | 78 | 77 | 68 | 74 | 77 | 68 | Kozhatayev | 77 | 74 | 72 | 75 | 69 | 72 | Borisavljevic | 77 | 73 | 74 | 74 | 65 | 74 | Roson | 78 | 76 | 61 | 70 | 74 | 58 | Kuss | 78 | 71 | 64 | 76 | 69 | 65 | Barta | 76 | 72 | 73 | 74 | 67 | 75 | Amador | 80 | 71 | 74 | 68 | 66 | 73 | Brenes | 78 | 72 | 68 | 78 | 68 | 68 | Elissonde | 78 | 73 | 63 | 77 | 66 | 63 | Salinas | 77 | 73 | 71 | 74 | 72 | 71 | Diaz | 78 | 70 | 72 | 73 | 68 | 72 | Ablenado | 78 | 67 | 72 | 77 | 65 | 72 | Jaramillo | 77 | 75 | 60 | 69 | 76 | 62 | Brandt | 76 | 69 | 73 | 69 | 66 | 72 | Ratiy | 79 | 69 | 73 | 72 | 57 | 73 | Potocki | 77 | 72 | 70 | 71 | 64 | 70 |
With the ITT being mostly about the mountain stat it's not surprising that the list of favourites is dominated by climbers. Mas is arguably the strongest and most complete climber in CT, as well as well supported in the TTT. Kozhatayev is not quite at that level, but also supported by an excellent TTT unit. Both of them have premium lieutenants in Borisavljevic and Barta who should help them in the mountains or even take over leadership responsibility if necessary. Roson is very similar to Mas, but a bit worse in every way. Still he should be near the front in the mountains. Same can be said of Kuss, although he might prefer stage 4 to stage 6.
Volcanica tend to prioritise Amador, but Brenes at least on paper is a decent deputy. Elissonde leads HelloFresh's depth approach along with Diaz and Potocki. This is one race that might suit Ablenado's mismatched skilleset. Jaramillo is an explosive climber, but can't do much else. Brandt will look to profit from Glanbia's now traditional TTT strength. Ratiy can climb and time-trial, but he's very slow at this point.
| Avg. TT | Avg. PR | TTT Score | BWT Hyundai N Cycling | 73.75 | 71.75 | 72.86 | Aramco DP | 72.38 | 72.88 | 72.60 | Glanbia Foods Cycling Project | 71.25 | 70.88 | 71.08 | McCormick Pro Cycling | 68.38 | 69.50 | 68.87 | Gjensidige Pro Cycling | 67.38 | 68.50 | 67.87 | Volcanica - Fox | 67.25 | 67.88 | 67.53 | HelloFresh | 66.63 | 68.25 | 67.35 | BNZ-SuperHero Racing | 66.25 | 68.38 | 67.19 | Pas Normal Studios - Mikkeller | 66.25 | 67.25 | 66.69 | Crabbe-CC Chevigny | 66.00 | 67.00 | 66.44 | Tafjord Kraft | 63.88 | 65.75 | 64.71 | Eddie Stobart | 65.00 | 64.13 | 64.61 | Strava | 64.86 | 65.71 | 61.16* | Trans Looney Toons | 68.67 | 68.67 | 60.09* |
* TTT Score is adjusted for having only 6 or 7 riders
BWT Hyundai and Aramco DP are the top two team time trialing units here in Canada. It's hard to pick between them, but they'll both be hoping their TTT strength can deliver their GC leader to a great result. Glanbia looks like the team that could challenge the other two in winning this stage. The rest will be looking to limit their losses, while Strava and Trans didn't even bother to send full 8 rider squads.
Sprinter | FL | RS | SP | AC | Leadout | FL | RS | SP | AC | Boivin | 74 | 70 | 79 | 80 | Barbero | 74 | 72 | 70 | 74 | Liepins | 73 | 68 | 78 | 79 | Kulikovskiy | 69 | 72 | 72 | 73 | Wippert | 70 | 70 | 78 | 82 | Gough | 65 | 65 | 68 | 69 | Bennett | 71 | 68 | 79 | 79 | Cruz | 75 | 72 | 68 | 70 | Tivani | 70 | 78 | 77 | 78 | Januskevicius | 70 | 72 | 68 | 68 | Stash | 73 | 73 | 77 | 77 | Tikhonin | 69 | 69 | 68 | 70 | Ranneries | 69 | 63 | 77 | 80 | Pavlic | 69 | 73 | 68 | 69 | Kristoff | 72 | 66 | 80 | 74 | Vanmarcke | 75 | 70 | 69 | 70 | Keukeleire | 71 | 66 | 79 | 77 | McEvoy | 70 | 70 | 75 | 79 | Abdul Halil | 68 | 66 | 79 | 77 | Thomas | 73 | 73 | 74 | 79 | Avelino | 69 | 63 | 81 | 75 | Li | 75 | 68 | 75 | 75 |
The list of sprinters here is pretty solid as the 3 flat stages have attracted quite a few who are in search of a stage victory. Boivin has shown some great performance at times and he has to be one of the favourites here. His main competitor might be Liepins. Both have solid lead outs that could help them. Wippert, Bennett, Tivani, Stash and Ranneries are all without recognised lead outs. We'll see if that gamble works out for them? Speaking of gambles Kristoff is a real wildcard with his great sprint opposed to his weak acceleration. Keukeleire, Abdul Halil and Avelino are good sprinters, but with unsuitable lead out riders, they'll likely need twice the luck to be successful.

At the moment I am feeling heavily disheartened. My team didn't perform as well as I expected but at least it was competitive in most races. However, last several races they show a worrying lack of interest and were constantly outperformed by way weaker riders, with our best place being 95th in the GC of Tour of Chile lingering painfully in memory.
So, I am not sure if I should put any hope here. I prepared the line-up with at least a stage win and mounting a challenge for the GC in mind. But I am not in the best of places right now in terms of confidence and motivation, therefore what will be will be.
Thank you very much for the excellent preview and good luck to all!

Thank you for the very detailed and comprehensive preview!! A pretty strong start list here and will be interesting to see how the GC shapes up with the TTT in there.
For us, it’s a fairly obvious one. We’ve got one of the best climbers here in Mas and I want to see him make a statement on Stage 4 which he can follow up on Stage 6. He’s definitely got what it takes so now it’s about going out there and doing it.
Borisavljevic is his only real MO lieutenant but he can’t ask for much better really. The Serb obviously a back up for leadership in case things go horribly wrong.
Then we have our entire TT team here to support the TTT with both Cosnefroy and Thomas. Expecting a Top 2 in that one and nothing less.
Finally, a couple sprint stages early on for Abdul Halil to target. Not the strongest start list so he’d have to back himself here with the support of Thomas.
Really looking forward to this one!! Good luck to all

Thanks for the preview. Back on more traditional Stage Race territory now for Glanbia.
Brandt was 11th last year so hoping he can be in the Top 10 at least. We will need a good TTT. Craddock is also here but the Mountains look a bit on the steep side for him, maybe a top 20, will be interesting to see his prologue though.
Good to see Bennett among the top sprinters, that would be a bonus

Pleased to see our TTT team isn't terrible versus the competition, not being terrible was the goal for this year in the TTTs. Kuss not the best leader for this race but decided it was better than the other options. Hopeful he can put in a decent race.
Thanks for the preview.

The depth scoring is the primary target here our tt setups are not strong enough to beat likes of aramco here. Thanks for a great preview!

The 2 Mountain goats who are rubbish normally go 1-2 which is kinda cool to see.
Poor from Mas and from Borisavljevic so hopefully they're just saving energy for the more important stages later in the race.

Not big gaps, can live with 34 seconds, mountain stages and TTT will be more important.

Solid start from Brandt and Craddock, they'll need any little cushion they can get for the mountains

Not a bad result there from Abdul Halil, about on level with what he should be capable of in this field.
Really nice report and always nice to see a solid sprint train deliver the local boy to a comfortable win. Congrats!

Nice lead out for Bennett, maybe the trick is to have no other sprinters!

Abdul Halil looked very promising there with his placement on another teams train as well as when he launched with 500m to go but unfortunately he’s got tired quickly which has seen him drop to 9th but good to see him involved.
Now for the GC stages!
Thanks for another great sprint report! Looking forward to the Mountains

Tivani matches Walscheid in the most wins by a second tier sprinter category. Also scores a win for a $0 rider. Imagine we will have a few of those this year.
Thanks for the reports and on to the big stages.

Well that went about as badly as it could have.
Amador is a superior climber so I can accept that but very poor from Mas to be distanced by Elissonde and then Brandt too and by some margin too. Borisavljevic also with an absolute shocker of a day in the saddle.
We will need a lot more from both of them on Stage 6 to give us any chance of a GC Win following the TTT.
Thank you for the very good report though and congrats to DarkWolf with Amador showing his prowess!

Big result for DW! Also nice to see Ellissonde perform well, very disenchanted with Potocki fading very heavily especially since he has been very solid so far this season. Also nice to Stash edge a few points in a sprint on the previous stage. Thanks for the reports!

Really not bad by Kuss, not competitive with the best riders but better than a lot of others, I think 5th on the stage and 6th on GC is a placing I can live with if he can be consistent on the other mountain stage and we can hold that at the finish I can live with it.
Thanks for the reports.
