Vuelta a España
Stage 19 of the Vuelta from Bilbao to Vitoria gives the riders a break from summit finishes, prior to tomorrow’s final GC stage. It is rated hilly but features significant climbing with two Cat 1s, a Cat 2 and a Cat 3, so there is opportunity for GC riders. However, the last 30k of the 180k are flat so if the punchy sprinters survive, they would hope to contest the stage win. On the other hand, the peloton could well take the day off and let the breakaway contest the stage.
The stage favorites reflect those first two alternatives with all of GC riders, punchy riders and sprinters represented.
15km gone and there are 8 riders at the front. They are Kolar, Sequera, Giannoutsos, Koshevoy, Sosa, Higuita, Vlasov, and Cink. Three more are 37 seconds behind this group, Prado, Serrano, and Boonratanathanakorn, the peloton at 2’17, appears happy with this break.
Madouas understandably taking a day off from the breakaway but he can’t love the presence of Sequera. The latter is 33 points behind in the KOM competition and there are 48 points available today.
The breakaway rolls through the first sprint in Durango with a 4 minute lead. All 11 together now, 149k to go.
The first climb of the day is the Cat 2 Alto de Karabieta, 6k at 6.8%. The break’s lead is 6 minutes. Sequera is the best positioned rider on GC at 26 minutes. It’s raining again.
Sequera attacks first with about 1.5k to climb, only Higuita goes with him.
Sequera takes first and the 10 points.
Evonik leads the peloton over 8’46 later. So far it looks like they will leave this to the breakaway.
5k to go to the top of the 2nd climb for the break, the Cat 1 Puerto de Elosua. It is 7.4k at 7.4% with the steepest section at the top.
Sequera attacks again and he and Koshevoy have a 24-second lead. They are on the steep sections now.
Sequera takes the maximum points at the top, he has 26 of the 34 points he needs to retake the KOM lead. The peloton over 9 minutes back now.
70k to go in the stage and 2k to the top of the Cat 3 climb. The lead is 13’47, looks like one of these riders will be winning a stage in the Vuelta today.
At the top Sequera takes 6 more points. This time ahead of Vlasov.
Cink leads the break on to the final climb, the Cat 1 Puerto de Urkiola, 5.4k at 9.6%. The lead reached 15 minutes but a few of the GC teams working now and have brought it back to 13’45.
Sequera may have spent too much energy earlier, with 1.8k to climb he is dropped. Boonratanathanakorn also dropped.
With 400 meters to go Sequera fights his way back into the group, he needs to finish 7th or better to take the KOM jersey.
And he does it. He will wear the KOM jersey on Stage 20 which gives him the benefit of preferential positioning in the peloton. Cink and Vlasov have been dropped.
29k to go for the breakaway only the Thai champion has been unable to rejoin. He is at 1’53, the peloton at 15’27. The peloton took the climb off but is chasing again now and has split, not clear if those splits are permanent at this point.
14k to go and Sequera attacks. With him are Giannoutsos,, Sosa, Higuita, and Vlasov. The peloton is back in one piece except for a handful of riders.
10k to go, the gap is 20 seconds between the first and second group. Moser trying to close it down as all 3 of their riders missed the move. Although they have a good shot at the team’s competition regardless, as they were only 21 minutes down to begin the day.
5k to go, still a 21 second gap. Vlasov the only one not working in the front group so it is 3 chasing 4 as Moser is carrying the chase in back group, Serrano doesn’t have to work since Sosa is in the front group and Koshevoy is choosing not to.
The peloton is at 13’37. Higuita is probably the best sprinter in the front group but they are pretty evenly matched.
1.5k to go, the front 5 still lead by 21 seconds but they were beginning to hesitate so Sosa decides to go for it.
1k, Sosa unable to get a gap and Higuita comes off his wheel.
500 meters, Higuita has daylight, now he needs to hold it to the line.
200 meters and he still looks strong. Sosa, out of it, the other 3 look to be battling for 2nd.
Higuita wins Vlasov 2nd, he will also move up a lot in the young rider competition. Sequera adds a third place to his stage win and KOM lead. Festina has been active in the breaks but not quite able to get the big prize. Giannoutsos settles for fourth. Sosa tried the early sprint and it failed, Grieg had two in the break, 5th not a great outcome.
But Serrano grabs 6th giving Grieg two scoring positions. Moser settle for 7th, 9th and 10th. Their will be some fingers pointed on the team bus about how they all missed the key move. Koshevoy 8th.
Boonratanathanakorn takes 11th.
In the pack Gaviria wins another sprint, this one for 12th place.
The final time gap is 13’25 which moves Sequera up to 11th in the GC, Vlasov up to 2nd in White (2’46 behind) and Higuita 3rd (6’15). Moser a consolation prize of 1st in the Team Competition, 8’08 ahead of Tinkoff, 15’40 up on Xero and 18’42 ahead of prior leaders Evonik.
