Vuelta a España
Stage 17 is the 4th of the 6 summit finishes. In addition to the summit finish this stage features a summit start with the riders immediately tackling the Cat 1 Port d’Envalira, 19k at 5.7%. That is followed by a Cat 2, another Cat 1 and then the HC finishing climb, Valter 2000. In total the stage is 136k almost all of which is uphill or downhill
The big 3 top the favorites list. Madrazo will hope today will finally be his day to come out on top.
It is pouring as the riders leave Andorra la Vella but that doesn’t discourage De la Cruz as he attacks almost immediately. He sits 12th in the GC
About 4k gone and twelve riders in pursuit of De la Cruz including two key KOM gladiators in Madouas and Sequera.
10k to climb, Evonik not taking any risks of this one getting out of control, the whole team on the front setting a very controlled pace.
Up front De la Cruz has been joined by the two mentioned before and his teammate Spanopoulos plus Koshevoy, Schlegel and Schönberger, they have 5’31 over the peloton and 1 minute over a group including Carboni, Nesset, Keinath, Mavrikakis, Roman, and Lammertink. A lot of familiar names from prior breakaways in these groups.
1.8k to go and Koshevoy launches the first attack.
1k to go Sequera bridges across but brings Madouas and the rest of the group, except Schönberger, with him. The Generali rider trails the Puma rider by 10 points in the KOM competition.
Schlegel puts in a searing attack at the top and takes maximum points.
Sequera gets 3rd, Madouas 5th, a 4 point gain for the former.
The climb splits up the breakaway and they are spread all over the road. Nesset and Roman have a good view of the riders in front of them and the low-lying clouds as they tackle the descent. The peloton isn’t working hard and they are over 11 minutes behind the front of the race, only a few riders dropped.
About half way down the descent and all the breakaway riders except Schönberger and Lammertink have come together. Their lead is 10’48. 101k to go.
Conditions still brutal as the breakaway rides through fog banks in the valley, they may have missed that Schönberger has rejoined, since they can barely see him in the fog at the back. But the stage hasn't been ridden that hard as Swift and Samolenkov have survived long enough to be leading the peloton which has cut the deficit to 9’27. 89k to go.
The peloton reaches the sprint point at Puigcerda trailing the break by 8’37. The sprinters are on the front but not because of the sprint point. Ahead the breakaway is about to start the 2nd climb, a Cat 2 to Collada de Tosses.
5k to climb for the breakaway, this climb is long at 18k but not steep, averaging just 3.8%. The lead is 9 minutes.
With 500k to go Madouas rips away for the rest of the group.
He easily takes the points and Sequera has to settle for fourth. A 6-point gain for Madouas. The KOM lead is back to 12 points.
Lammertink was never able to rejoin and is almost back in the peloton.
With 36k to go the breakaway passes the 2nd sprint point and starts the Cat 1 Climb of the Coll de Jou. 8.8k at 7.5% up this approach. The peloton is at 7’37. Still 140 riders in the peloton.
Still over 2k to the top and Madouas is struggling. Zwift and King Power driving the peloton behind.
Madouas is able to regain the group as Roman kicks off the attacks.
As they reach the top Roman has a small lead over Nesset, while De la Cruz works to close the gap.
Roman and Nesset are the first across and Sequera sprints to third with Madouas fifth. The gap back to 8 points, so far a good day for Madouas as he has lost only 2 points of his lead. Now it will depend on what happens at the finish. He is also still in the White Jersey.
Petelin leads the peleton over the top of the climb 7’23 behind. Zwift have burned out all of their workers and most of the other teams other than King Power don’t seem interested in working so far. There are 88 riders left in the peloton.
Still 1k to the official start of the final climb and De la Cruz, Sequera and Carboni attack. Spanopoulos and Schönberger were dropped near the top of the last climb and haven’t been able to rejoin. The peloton is at 6’19. The finishing climb is 11.8k at 7.6%.
8k to the finish, Madouas closes the front three down but Sequera and De la Cruz immediately counter. In the peloton King Power has run out of riders Moser has come to the front.
A show of strength from Gazelle as Karnulin and Furdi drag Madrazo clear. Up front Sequera has attacked De la Cruz. He has 10 seconds on the Festina man and 1 minute on the rest of the break.
EA help out Taaramäe and Tenorio as Cabrera pulls the 3 Gazelle riders back.
5k for Sequera, he has 27 seconds on De la Cruz and 1’25 on the rest. The peloton at 5’38. Looks like this one will go to the break unless the leaders attack soon.
6.5k for the peloton, still 60 riders in the peloton but the Red Jersey is a long way back. Surely Madrazo needs to attack.
Instead, it is Pinot. Smith chasing.
3.3k for Sequera but he is looking ragged. He has 46 seconds on De la Cruz and 1’33 on the other 8. Pinot is at 5’57 the peloton at 6’27.
2.1k to go, his lead is down to 1’27, some of the hardest grades still to come. Pinot is at 5’15, 1’12 ahead of the peloton.
1k banner for Sequera, 1 hairpin to go and he will have a stage win and maybe the KOM jersey. His lead is 49 seconds over De la Cruz who looks like he will be caught by the other chasers.
2.4k for the Madrazo led peloton which is down to 38 riders, but nobody important dropped. They tail Pinot by 1 minute and Sequera by 5’30.
Sequera out of the saddle as he rounds the final bend.
Schlegel attacks out of the breakaway chase group. De la Cruz looks like he will be swamped. Koshevoy and Roman also look strong. Keinath has been dropped.
In the peloton Reis is the first top GC rider to show weakness as he has been dropped from the Madrazo group which is down to 20.
Sequera has no energy left for celebrating but he is going to win Stage 17. De la Cruz has found a second wind and looks like he will hold on for 2nd.
De la Cruz gets second and Roman completes the podium. Nesset 4th, Schlegel 5th.
Koshevoy edges Madouas for 6th. The Frenchman will lose the KOM jersey for now. There are still plenty of points to come.
Mavrikakis, Carboni and Keinath complete the top 10.
With 400 meters to go the Red Jersey group catches Pinot.
Pinot leads them home for 11th about 3 minutes behind the winner. There are no time gaps except for Reis who loses 26 seconds enough to drop him to 10th behind Cattaneo. Sequera also moves up to 15th in the GC at the expense of Mamykin. Madouas loses the Polka Dot but expands his lead in White back to 4’26. Tinkoff’s lead over Evonik in the team competition shrinks to 15 seconds.
Maybe it was the cold, maybe it was the hard day yesterday but for whatever reason the leaders seem to call a truce today resulting in an easy breakaway win. Taaramäe will certainly be happy with the lack of drama. Hopefully tomorrow’s queen stage will bring more action from the top contenders.
