Vuelta a España
Stage 16 is the second time trial of the Vuelta. Not quite a mountain TT as there is as much distance downhill as uphill but performance on the uphill section will have a heavy role in the outcome, but there might still be some advantage to the stronger TT riders. The climb today is the Col d’Ordino, 15km at an average of 6.1% with stretches over 10% in the middle third.
The GC riders dominate the favorites list but someone on the organizing committee had had a little too much Ouzo when they put Vlatos on the list.
Vlatos was the lantern rouge when we started the last TT. But by stage 16 he has progressed to being second-to-last, nevertheless he is the first finisher. His time is 1’15’48. In the first TT his time lasted until the last dozen or so riders, this time it lasts about 5 riders when the Mostov beats him by 3 minutes.
Given none of these early times is likely to be significant we will fast forward a few hours. The race leader has left the start and 15th placed Mamykin is about to reach the top of the Col d’Ordino.
The standings at the top of the climb are on the left below, at the finish on the right.
Aular who hasn’t yet reached the finish looks likely to take over the lead when he gets there. Perhaps most notable is that the hot seat currently belongs to Cink, who is a demon downhill. To do that he put 36 seconds into Powless and 32 seconds Canty in the second half of the course. So, gains can be made on the downhill if you can keep it close on the uphill.
For now we will focus on results at the second check at the top of the climb.
Mamykin completes the climb in in 59th place, 2’42 off the pace. Not a great time which is illustrated by the fact that the rider just ahead of him his Kirsch who started behind him. Kirsch was 31 seconds off Aular’s time, good enough for third. Luckily for Mamykin he started the day with a good cushion so he won’t lose any places.
Pinot comes across in 8th, 58 seconds behind.
De la Cruz cedes 1’30.
Bennett has De la Cruz in his sights as he reaches the top.
At the check he is 2nd, just 2 seconds off the best time. Meanwhile the owner of that best time Aular, has reached the finish and has held on to the lead in the stage by 12 seconds. It is a great ride and he gains 2’24 on Madouas in the White Jersey competition but the Frenchman holds on to the lead by for that jersey by 1’13
The climb hasn’t changed the GC rankings in the top 15 so far.
Cattaneo will have marked this stage as a big opportunity and he is one of the top favorites. And he lives up to that by setting the new best time by 1’17 at the top of the climb. Cattaneo not great downhill which could cost him.
Reis is next.
Reis slots into 4th, 1’35 down, he led Cattaneo by 2’08 at the start of the day, he should hold on to that.
Carthy is the new 2nd at the top, 1’11 down.
Kritskiy beats him by a second, 1'10 down.
Haig not too far behind the Russian. His time should be a good one.
Yes, he is just 16 seconds off the lead.
No changes in the top 15 rankings so far at the 2nd time check. But 5th placed Meintjes started the day just 7 seconds ahead of Haig and 17 seconds ahead of Kritskiy, so he is under pressure.
And the South African champion is 27 seconds down on the leader, meaning he is dropping behind Haig at the moment, but he is a much better rider downhill so he could still get the 5 seconds he needs back. No threat to him from Kritskiy
4th in the GC Hirt crosses 33 seconds behind Cattaneo. That means he has lost only 6 of his 30 second GC advantage so it should be good enough to keep him in 4th unless Meintjes has a magical ride downhill.
Madrazo over next and he underlines why it is big 3 in this race, he sets the new best time. He is the first rider under 40 minutes on the climb and leads Cattaneo by 22 seconds.
But that record doesn’t last as Tenorio beats Madrazo by 18 seconds. Neither is great downhill so don’t expect a lot of change.
Mamykin and Kirsch have reached the finish with similar gaps to at the top. Just the Red Jersey still to reach the top.
At the finish the climb looms behind Pinot.
The ISA-Hexacta rider finishes 1’37 down. He was 58 seconds ahead of Kirsch in the GC after the climb, he is now 54 seconds behind, the downhill not impacting things much.
Now we have news on the Red Jersey, he is 7 seconds behind Tenorio at the top of the climb. Today’s stage looks to be uneventful in the GC but can the Estonian find 7 seconds on the downhill to take the stage.
Bennett and Cattaneo come to the finish together.
Cattaneo has the new best time at the finish adding 3 seconds to his lead over Aular. A decent downhill from him means he also expanded his lead over Bennet. But still no changes in the top 15 at the finish so far.
Reis comes home next, he loses another 13 seconds to Cattaneo but hangs on to 9th by 19 seconds.
Carthy, Kritskiy and Haig finish with similar gaps to those at the top of the climb. Haig is the new 2nd place on the stage,15 seconds behind the leader. The question is whether that good enough to keep him ahead of Meintjes in the GC, the FarFetch rider has himself low on the bike as he charges towards the finish.
No it isn’t, the South African’s skills on the downhill prove valuable and he turns an 11 second deficit into a 12 second advantage, he at least holds on to 5th in the GC and moves into 2nd on the stage, just 3 seconds behind Cattaneo.
And the next rider home is Hirt who finishes 36 seconds behind Cattaneo good enough for 4th at the moment. But not good enough to protect his GC position as Meintjes moves past him by 3 seconds. It was indeed a magical downhill ride.
Madrazo finishes next and takes over the stage lead. He expands his lead over Cattaneo from 23 to 29 seconds on the downhill, but the two ahead of him on the GC are the superior TT riders and that probably won’t be good enough.
Tenorio isn’t far behind, will he match Taaramäe with three stage wins?
He gains 12 seconds on Madrazo and has a 30 second lead at the finish. Even if he doesn’t win the stage he will be happy to have some extra daylight ahead of all the climbing on stages 17 and 18.
Taaramäe finishes to complete stage 16 of the Vuelta.
He will only finish 2nd today, 6 seconds off the pace, the top two hard to separate but the Spaniard is able to eek out the stage win.
In the end the time trial has little impact on the GC standings, some gaps shrink and some widen but the only change in the standings sees Hirt and Meintjes swap places but they are just 3 seconds apart so that could easily change again.
None of the jerseys change hands, perhaps the biggest change is that Tinkoff’s lead over Evonik in the team jersey shrinks from over 5 minutes to 1’43.
