Stage 1 is the time for the favourites to put their foot down. The opening time-trial is very important and while you probably can't lose the race right here. You also can't afford to have a big gap.
Sipos is a good time-trialist as he sets the initial mark.
21'02''
One of the favourites Viennet is an early starter and he absolutely crushes the previous best time.
20'22''
Sterbini comes in 2nd 13'' slower.
20'35''
Viviani comes in 3rd.
20'36''
Li is now 2nd best at 11''.
20'33''
Robert doesn't have a great ride and comes in far down in 15th.
21'00''
Thomas sets the new 2nd best time. His compatriot Viennet is still a level above though.
20'30''
Speaking of Frenchmen we now have three on top and as a surprise Mottin beats out Viennet by a second.
20'21''
Haugard on the other hand doesn't do well, only in 11th as he comes across the line.
20'40''
Kwok has a good effort as he makes it onto 3rd place provisionally.
20'37''
Big surprise! Fejes sets the new best another 2'' faster than Mottin. Unfortunately our cameras missed him crossing the line.
20'19''
Kittel comes in 7'' behind the Hungarian, enough for 4th place.
20'26''
Gonzalez Salas has a poor ride and only places 21st.
20'41''
We're in the 2nd half of the startlist now. Lammertink is one of the favourites for today and he's off to a good start with the best time at the time check.
9'07''
No one worth mentioning has made it to the finish so we go back to Lammertink. New best time! 5'' faster than Fejes.
20'14''
Fominykh outperforms his stats to finish 5th for the moment.
20'25''
The CT teams are certainly mixing it up today as Downey provides a surprise and beats Lammertink by a comfortable margin.
20'08''
Hamza with a decent ride comes in 5th.
20'20''
Aussie TT champ Durbridge not off to a great start as he's 3'' behind Downey at the intermediate check. But that's certainly a gap that can be overcome.
9'07''
Fiedler a second faster than the Aussie at the time check.
9'06''
Cataford who is mainly hunting stage results is at 4''.
9'08''
Durbridge will be disappointed with this stage result, only 3rd place. At least he limits the gap to 7''.
20'15''
Howson matches Downey at the first time check.
9'04''
Veteran Coppel finishes 12th, 21'' behind the current leader.
20'29''
Dillier 4'' behind at the time check.
9'08''
Fiedler comes in 2nd at the finish, still 4'' behind Downey which really puts into perspective what a great day it was for the Irishman.
20'12''
Cataford though at 9'' has to settle for 5th for the time.
20'17''
The big, big favourite of course is Zmorka and like Howson he ties for the best time at the intermediate check.
9'04''
Speaking of Howson he's only gone and done it. A second faster than Downey!
20'07''
Dillier loses another 3'' in the 2nd half of the course. 5th place for him.
20'14''
The Irish champion gets a bit upstaged today as Mullen doesn't have a good day.
20'28''
Zmorka is judged to be only fractions of a second faster than Howson, but we have him in the lead for now.
20'07''
Danish champion Hansen is really the last competent TTer that makes it to the finish line and he places 17th. The last group on the course is made up of sprinters.
20'28''
The judges in the end reverse their original decision so Damien Howson is the stage winner! Zmorka is on the same time though and will be after revenge in the two remaining TTs. Downey is the surprise rider on the final podium spot.
