Vuelta a España
Stage 12 is the race’s second big summit finish and it has much in common with the first one. A mid-stage HC climb followed by a finish on an iconic mountain. This time it is Sierra Nevada, longer but not as steep as the Angliru. Maybe a day for the diesel climbers. In addition to the HC climb and the HC finishing points there are two cat 3 climbs.
The different profile results in a slightly different skew in the favorites, although the big guns are the same.
KOM leader Zimmermann not messing around and has himself in this first breakaway group. 10k in these 5 have 2’12 on the peloton. 14 more riders trying to bridge across.
With 17k all 19 are together, their lead is 2’56 and they are starting the first Cat 3, which is 12k at a gentle 4%.
The breakaway riders are:
Giannoutsos
Miltiadis
Keinath
Mäder
Serrano
Hofstede
Tolhoek
Koshevoy
Boonratanathanakorn
Fabbro
Quintana
van der Poel
McKenna
Prado
Conci
Madouas
Zimmermann
Kipkemboi
Meurisse
None of Zimmerman’s main rivals for the KOM are here, in fact the closest to him is his trusty breakaway companion Madouas. Keinath closest on GC at 9’40.
The KOM leader maybe saving his ammunition for the HC climb as he doesn’t make much of an effort on the first climb. Prado takes the points ahead of Fabbro and McKenna.
The peloton let the lead go out to 4 minutes but with 100k to go has it down to 3’08. Many of the GC leader’s teams working.
87k to go. The breakaway starts the first big climb, the Puerto de la Cabra Montes, 12k at 7.9%. Their lead is 2’58.
3k to the top, work from Koshevoy splits the breakaway, 10 riders 30 seconds back. Evonik has been pushing the pace and the peloton is only another 1’04 back.
Madouas not waiting for his teammates, he pushes the pace at the front and reduces the group to 6 including 3 from Mapei. 1.2k to the top. The peloton has eased off and dropped back a little.
Fabbro counters and take maximum points with Madouas on his wheel.
The second cat 3 is soon after and this time Madouas takes maximum points.
Zimmerman not scoring much today but his teammate doing enough to move into second. The virtual KOM looks like this:
The six surviving breakaway riders are Giannoutsos, Koshevoy, Fabbro, Quintana, van der Poel, and Madouas. They lead the peloton by 2’08. Keinath and Meurisse are at 1’16. The rest of the break has been caught. Pretty much flat from here until the Sierra Nevada which starts 16k from the finish. The peleton down to 67 riders with 19th placed Canty the best placed victim.
With 32k to go the Evonik led peloton catches the 2 who were in between. The leaders still have 2’39.
21k to go, on the last small climb before the big finish Giannoutsos puts in a dig dropping the 2 extra Mapei riders, just Fabbro left. But with the peloton at 1’02 it is all for TV time now.
The first hairpins of the Sierra Nevada loom above Fabbro as he repays his teammates with a gallant attack on to the lower slopes of the climb. He has 1’20 on the peloton the others in between. The climb is 16k at an average of 8.5%. Gazelle have been working with Evonik behind.
12k left and Fabbro is the last man caught. 57 riders in the peloton.
9.2k to go and Vosekalns goes to the front and immediately drops 12 riders off the back, peloton at 32. Vlasov dropped, his White Jersey rivals are both in the front group as are all the top 18 except Keinath (16th) who is paying for his doomed breakaway.
7.6k to and Vosekalns’ work drops the group to 17 and Taaramäe attacks. Both other young rider contenders are dropped and the chase group is pretty much the top 18 on GC plus a couple from Evonik minus Keinath and Carboni (12th). Tinkoff the only other team with multiple riders. So, the leaders will be fighting this one out mano-a-mano.
6.7k to go, a long dig from Cattaneo reduces the gap to 7 seconds and the splits the chase group. Top 10 in GC all accounted for but 11th place De la Cruz misses the split while 13th placed Bennett makes it.
Taaramäe begins to pull away so Madrazo chases ith Tenorio on his wheel. Kritskiy unable to follow so the front 3 have a 25 second gap on the other 8. The cream rises to the top.
5.5k to go and Tenorio is in trouble.
Taaramäe on fire today, another dig puts paid to Madrazo. The gap to Tenorio is already 46 seconds, Taaramäe only trailed by 1’13 at the start of the day.
3.3k for Taaramäe his lead is 32 seconds to Madrazo and 1’13 to Tenorio, he is in virtual red with time bonuses. The next 8 are still together 39 seconds behind Tenorio.
1.6k to go for the leader, the gaps are just growing. 55 seconds to Madrazo, 1’38 to Tenorio, 2’24 to the group of 8.
Taaramäe still looking strong as he reaches the finish, a huge day for Evonik.
Hirt, Kritskiy and Bennett dropped from the chase group as the leaders of the chasing group catch a fading Tenorio under the 1k banner.
2nd will be a little disappointing for Madrazo today. He loses 59 seconds to Taaramäe but gains 38 on Tenorio, he still has over a minute thirty deficit on his fellow Spaniard.
Tenorio recovers enough to outsprint Carthy for 3rd and limit his losses to the stage winner to 1’37. He is now 36 seconds behind in the GC.
Reis with a solid 6th on his kind of terrain followed by Cattaneo, Haig, and Meintjes
Hirt and Kritskiy round out the top 10 ahead of Bennett.
Tinkoff the biggest loser here as Kriskiy drops to 7th on GC and they concede the teams lead to Evonik.
Powless expands his White Jersey lead. No changes in the other competitions.
