Vuelta a España
Stage 11 of the Vuelta takes the peloton on a 154k loop finishing and ending in Malaga. The stage is rated hilly but has some long climbs. As they aren’t that close to the finish this might be one for the breakaway. Three Cat 2’s, 2 Cat threes and a Cat 4 mean plenty of points on offer in the KOM competition.
The favorites are once again the GC contenders.
The first sprint point come just 12k into the stage and the breakaway riders take it. Right now, 2 on the front, Madouas and Beniusis then a group of 9 including the KOM leader and then about a minute to the peloton where 3 more riders are on the move.
131k to go as the breakaway starts the first cat 2. It is the Subida Calamorro, 7.5k at 9.3%. The front eleven have come together but so far the peloton reluctant to let more riders clear. The full list of riders up front is Zimmermann (the Blue Jersey) plus two of his teammates ( Madouas and Stork), two from Grieg ( Vingegaard and Serrano), two from ISA-Hexacta ( Parra Bustamente and Mraouni), two from Festina ( Ioannidis and Miltiadis) and two singletons: Beniusis, and Bernas. A good group for Puma, none of them other than Zimmerman has many KOM points and Madouas is highest on GC, over 15 minutes down.
2.2k to the top of the climb. Menten and Eaton have been able to bridge up to the break but Mraouni, Bernas and Beniusis have been dropped. So ten left at the front they are 2’58 ahead of the peloton with the dropped riders in between.
Vingegaard leads out the dash for the KOM points, Zimmerman got himself boxed in a little. Eaton has been dropped.
But the Grieg rider went too early and Ioannidis takes max points with Zimmerman in second. Serrano is dropped.
Miltiadis, Menten and Stork take the rest of the points. The peloton is at 2’56. Frame who finished last yesterday and is the lantern rouge, has already been dropped.
The breakaway rolls through the 2nd sprint point without worrying about it. Serrano has been able to rejoin. The other original breakaway riders are closer to the peloton, which isn’t letting go, the lead is just 2’07.
85k to go for the peloton. They have caught Eaton, Mraouni, Bernas and Beniusis. So just 9 left out front where Serrano has been dropped again. The lead is 2’03 and a handful of other riders have joined Frame off the back.
67k to go for the peloton as they start the longest climb of the day. El Camino del los Perro, which is 11.9k long but averages just 4.1% (mainly due to a long flat stretch in the middle). Serrano and Miltiadis are both back in the pack and Stork is in trouble. The peloton is at 1’12 and being led by teams like FarFetch, cycleYorkshire and Xero who have strong puncheurs or may feel they should be represented in the break.
6k to the top, the peloton just 32 seconds behind but a little dig from the front-runners expanded the lead. Just 5 up front now: Zimmermann, Madouas, Vingegaard, Parra Bustamente and Ioannidis. The peloton is down to 86 riders and the White Jersey, Roman, has been dropped.
1k to the top and the two Puma riders are on their own at the front.
Strangely Madouas goes over first, nevertheless Zimmerman is expanding his KOM lead. The nearest chasers at 49 seconds, the peloton back to 1’29.
1.5k to the top of the next Cat 2 for the two leaders, 43k left in the stage. All the others caught, the peloton is at 1’50.
Sequera, Fung, and Velasco come out of the pack to take the rest of the KOM points.
The Puma duo have a 2’10 lead. There are 20k to go, three short climbs in that space, a Cat 4 and two Cate 3’s. The other attackers dropped back to the peloton after the KOM. FarFetch, cycleYorkshire and Moser working in the pack.
At the Cat 4 Zimmerman took the points ahead of Madouas. Velasco takes the last point from the pack. Lead down to 1’47. Zimmerman now has a 25 point lead over Sequera in the KOM.
Zimmerman adds to his lead at the first Cat 3. The peloton at 1’34. 15k to go, still one more climb.
10k to go for the front two, 3.4k on the last climb which averages 6.8%. The lead is 56 seconds. Hosek, leading the peloton, can just be glimpsed through the trees.
1k from the top of the climb and the Puma dream date ends in disappointment. Prado leads Hirt at the front. Will the Czech rider try to pay back the work of his team with an attack?
Just over the top Hirt takes off. Mostly downhill to the finish but he isn’t that great downhill. The peloton is down to 57, most notable rider dropped is Higuita who is in the fight for the white jersey.
2.3k for the leader, he has held a 9 second advantage down most of the climb. Meintjes leading the chase.
1k for Hirt. He used the one little raise before the 1k banner to extend his lead. He leads by 20 seconds and is looking good for the win.
Head down all the way to the line for Hirt. A great win for Moser, they worked hard to set him up and he delivered.
Meintjes takes 2nd and Madrazo edges Meurisse for 3rd to take the bonus seconds.
Carthy in 5th, then Bennett, Hindley, Kangert, Taaramäe, and Carboni complete the top 10.
Hirt finishes with a 24 second gap. Not enough to gain any positions in the GC. So, no changes at the top of the points or GC standings. Higuita and Roman both lose significant time so Powless back in White, 47 seconds ahead of Vlasov. Tinkoff still the team leaders.
