Stage 9 Report

Stage 9 takes the riders back into the hills for the second time. But this time the finish is on a longer climb, the climb to Peña Carbarga which is 6.7k at a 6.9% average grade but with sections of 19% at the top. It is preceded by a Cat 4 and Cat 2 climb, there are also Cat 2 points at the finish. It should be our first chance to see how the GC contenders are climbing. The stage is also fairly long at 213k.

The favorites are the GC riders with the Maillot Rojo topping the list.

About 20k gone and four riders have a 2’27 lead. They are: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Menten, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Zakarin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Sosa, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png van der Hoorn. Zakarin is the closest on GC at 4’06 and the only one with any KOM points, he has 2, so he would need to make it to the finish to take the KOM lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S9/01.jpg

The leaders ignore the first sprint point but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Ahlstrand scores a moral victory by winning the sprint for 5th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S9/02.jpg

At the second sprint point with 90k to go the sprinters leave it too late and a pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Bertilsson, who has been chasing for Moser, takes the last point. Other teams chasing are cycleYorkshire, FarFetch and Xero. The lead never went much about 3 minutes and is 2’28 now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S9/03.jpg

With 64k to go the break starts the Cat 4 Portillo de la Sia, 11.2k but with an average of just 4.2%. The peloton is at 1’18.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S9/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Kipkemboi drives the peloton up the climb and with 5k to go the lead is just 35 seconds. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Bennett conceded over 5 minutes in the time trial so maybe he sees today as a chance to get some time back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S9/05.jpg

With 3.5k to climb and 56k left in the stage it is Grupo Compacto. Except for a few riders who have been dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S9/06.jpg

The pace continues to the top and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Velasco grabs first place at the top ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S9/07.jpg

More forcing from Xero on the descent splits the peloton. The front group has just 36 riders but includes all the top names. The second group of another 53 riders is 34 seconds back while a third group including Gaviria is a further 42 seconds behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S9/08.jpg

With 35k to go the peloton is back up to 146 riders. They are beginning the Cat 2 Puerto de Alisas (8.6k at 5.9%).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S9/09.jpg

3.7k to the top, the pace has been steady but not hard, still 142 riders in the group. The race leader sitting in 3rd wheel while Moser does the work.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S9/10.jpg

700 meters to the top, 27k to the finish, the front group is down to 46 riders but the gaps are small, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Aular the most interesting name in trouble.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S9/11.jpg

No fight for the KOM points. All the current leaders have already been dropped. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Velasco will get the jersey back tomorrow. 8 more riders have been dropped including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Karnulin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S9/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Schönberger leads the 38-rider front group on to the final climb. They have 1’06 over the chasing group of 46. 6.6k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S9/13.jpg

3.1k to go, cycleYorkshire have been on the front for most of the climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Carthy has taken over from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png McCarthy. The group is still 37 strong and they lead by 57 seconds over a chase group which is down to 20 riders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Aular is at 2’56 so his young rider hopes taking a hit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S9/14.jpg

1.7k to go, a short flat section then the steepest sections of the climb. The front group is down to 28, no big names dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S9/15.jpg

Under the 1k banner. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Carthy still leading.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S9/16.jpg

600 meters, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Blums did nice work to bring pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Taaramäe to the front. 4 more riders dropped including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Powless and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke, tough for the EA rider he almost made it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S9/17.jpg

It is an uphill sprint. 300 meters, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Taaramäe leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Carthy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Madrazo, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Tenorio.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S9/18.jpg

They can’t get around Taaramäe, he has time to celebrate.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S9/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Tenorio snatches 2nd to limit his time loss to the time bonus between 1st and 2nd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Carthy third, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Madrazo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Haig.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S9/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Carboni leads home pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Hirt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Bennett in 6th through 8th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S9/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Keinath and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Meintjes take 9th and 10th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S9/22.jpg

The first time gap comes after 10th as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Pinot and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Cattaneo lose 28 seconds. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Kirsch finishes in a group at 37 seconds. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Reis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Kritskiy lose 1 minute.

The GC podium positions don’t change. The leaders now just 8 seconds apart. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Madrazo up to 5th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Powless expands his White jersey lead to almost 4 minutes ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Mäder. Gazelle still leads the teams jersey, now ahead of Amaysim and Gaviria still leads the points.

Tomorrow the Angliru.
