Stage 5 Report

Stage 5 is the Vuelta’s first move into the climber’s terrain. The stage is rated hilly and features 3 climbs in the last third of the 179k stage. The hardest is the last one, the Cat 2 Alto del Caracol which is 7.3k at an average of 6.1%. From the summit of that climb, it is 33k of mostly downhill and flat to the finish. Some of the better climbing sprinters might hope to hang on and contest that finish.

But the race organization thinks it will be the GC riders fighting it out and they dominate the favorites list:

About 20k gone. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Zakarin has 6 seconds over a group of 3 including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Harper, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Palyi, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Laporte. But the peloton is still going hard behind and the gap is only 28 seconds. The rain not making things any easier.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S5/01.jpg

The rain has stopped but the lead is only 38 seconds as the front 4 contest the first sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Harper takes it ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Laporte and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Zakarin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S5/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Grosu comes out of the peloton to take the last point.

King Power is able to get two riders, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Fung and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Marzuki, across the gap to make it a 6-man break. The peloton has eased off and the lead is 1’41 with 129k to ride.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S5/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Palyi wins the 2nds sprint. The lead is 2’15 with just over 100k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S5/04.jpg

As the peloton starts the first climb, the Cat 3 Alto Estacas de Trueba, the lead is just 2’07 with 81k to go. Isostar, Huski and EA doing the work. Expect to see them ease off on the climb as they are riding for their sprinters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S5/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Palyi holds off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Fung for first at the top. These two have 2’40 over the peloton, the other 4 spread back down the mountain.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S5/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Laporte took the last 2 KOM points.

63k to go as the front two start the Cat 3 Puerto de la Braguia (6.5k at 5.7%). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Laporte and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Zakarin are just behind them. The other two are at 1’15 the peloton at 3’02. A 16-rider group including the race leader, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Swift, have been dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S5/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Palyi cracks pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Fung just before the top and takes 6 more points. The other two were never able to rejoin and are now 1’30 back. The peloton, led by Huski and Isostar, at 2’38.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S5/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Zakarin takes the last two points this time.

By the time Huski and Isostar lead the peloton oer the top of the climb the lead is 3’29. The Swift group has rejoined.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S5/09.jpg

39k to go. The two leaders are on the final climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Zakarin is at 1’20. The other 3 are almost back in the peloton which is at 2’37.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S5/10.jpg

1.3k to climb as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Palyi attacks. The peloton is at 1’37, still 143 riders in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S5/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Palyi takes the points on his own. He has 22 points. But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Velasco, the KOM leader has attacked out of the peloton and is 3rd on the road. If he keeps that to the top and takes 6 points they will be tied for the KOM lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S5/12.jpg

As the peloton cross the top they are 2’12 behind the lone leader. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Grosu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Gaviria showing their strength, both are in the first 10 positions. Swift has just been dropped again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S5/13.jpg

Fung took 2nd and Velasco 3rd in the KOM. The latter and Palyi tied for the lead. But Palyi in a much better GC position so if he doesn’t lose time today he should wear the jersey.

25k left for the peloton which is 124-riders strong. But the 3 teams that have done the chasing to date seem to have run out of riders as Puma goes to the front and the pressure easies off. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Palyi has a 2’21 lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Fung 53 seconds behind him. Both were just 1 minute off the GC lead at the start of the day. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Velasco is back in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S5/14.jpg

10k banner for the Hungarian champion. His lead is 2’30 over the peloton 1’06 ahead of Fung. cycleYorkshire and Xero are chasing now but it seems too late.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S5/15.jpg

Under 5k for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Palyi. Puma and FarFetch also working in the peloton and the lead is 1’32. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Fung is about to be caught. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Swift has rejoined the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S5/16.jpg

Under 3k to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Mager attacks followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Meurisse. But they are still over one minute behind the leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S5/17.jpg

1k to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Palyi has 32 seconds on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Mager and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png McCarthy. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Meurisse has been caught by the peloton which is 47 seconds behind the leader. Palyi won’t get the Red Jersey today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S5/18.jpg

500 meters for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Palyi. The peloton all back together. They are just around the corner where they are beginning to sprint. Does he have anything left to hold them off?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S5/19.jpg

He does, he puts in a little acceleration and gives himself time to celebrate. Two stages in a row for Mapei.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S5/20.jpg

300 meters to go in the sprint for 2nd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Gaviria has the edge over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Meurisse and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Velasco.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S5/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Gaviria takes 2nd over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Meurisse. The Colombian with 5 straight podiums to start the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S5/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Zakarin takes 5th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Madrazo edges pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Ahlstrand for 6th. Might be first time those two have ever competed in a sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Aular, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Higuita, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Haig complete the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S5/23.jpg

Although pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Swift finishes with peloton the bonus seconds are enough to put Gaviria back in the GC lead. He also extends his points lead. Palyi’s 12 second gap and bonus seconds move him up to third in the GC and he takes the KOM lead.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Geniets finishes in the peloton and holds on to the young rider jersey. The first time gap of the race gives Mapei the team jersey but tomorrow is a 42k time trial so expect a very different look to the standings after that.
