Stage 2 Report

Stage 2 is a second flat stage, this time 172km from Mairena del Alcor to Córdoba. This time the finish is flat but it is preceded in the last 50 k by two climbs, a Cat 3 and a Cat 2. Not only with the KOM jersey be awarded but there might also be a chance for some attacks. Also because of the hills near the finish this stage only awards 30 points in the Green Jersey competition.

The stage favorites show up as the sprinters:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/favs.jpg

27km in and we have nobody out front, one of yesterday’s attackers, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Mostov, spent a lot of time off the front with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Geniets but repeated attacks meant they never got a significant gap and now they are back in the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/01.jpg

It takes another 20k but we end up with a break with a similar make up to the original duo, a FarFetch rider, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Velasco, and a rider with McCormick connections, in this case the younger pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen, back with his home squad this year. Their lead is 2’39.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/02.jpg

Velasco easily wins the first sprint. The lead is down to 1’19 with 92k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/03.jpg

In the peloton pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Gaviria gets a lead out from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Bernas and takes 4 points for third ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Ahlstrand and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Harrison.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/04.jpg

The breakaway’s lead expand back to over 2 minutes after the sprint but as they start the Cat 3, Aldo de San Jerónimo it is back down to 1’26 with 54k to go in the stage. The climb is 4.6k at an average of 6.4%.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/05.jpg

At the top Velasco gets the better of Wirtgen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/06.jpg

The peloton crosses 2’33 later with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Hofstede taking the points as he sets the tempo.

Velasco easily outsprints Wirtgen to take the second sprint point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/07.jpg

The prior climb split the peloton into 3 groups. In the back group are a couple of the sprinters from yesterday, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Rowe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Minali, as well as the White Jersey, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Resell and a number of lead out men. None of the top GC men impacted but some of the second tier riders are behind. Maybe happy to take some time losses to set up later attacks.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/08.jpg

A close contest sees pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Ahlstrand edge pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Gaviria and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Grosu for 3rd to 5th at the sprint point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/09.jpg

30k to go for the peloton, which is all back together. Huski and Isostar dominant on the front. They trail the 2 breakaway riders by 55 seconds and have just started the Cat 2 Alto del Catorce (7.7k at 5.5%).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/10.jpg

1k to go on the climb for Velasco, he dropped Wirtgen a while back and the latter is back in the peloton. He has a 53 second advantage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/11.jpg

The FarFetch rider holds on to take 10 points and will wear the KOM jersey tomorrow. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Tolhoek lead the peloton across. There is 24k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/12.jpg

The peloton doesn’t split this time but the White Jersey is dropped again as is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Rowe.

Just over 6k to go, the break is over and the peloton is on the finishing circuit in Córdoba. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Minali has been dropped and 3 Aegon riders have made the questionable decision to drop back with him. A number of lead out riders are still struggling near the back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/13.jpg

2.5k to go, the damage from the climb is obvious as we have just one big train of sprinters. At the front is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Rickaert followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Gaviria, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Ahlstrand, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Swift, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Farantakis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png De Buyst, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kamberaj, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Harrison, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Novardianto, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Trondsen. On the right is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Grosu who lost his lead out and is already in the wind, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Lo Cicero and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Bertilsson on his wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke is near the front of the peloton but not clear if he will sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/14.jpg

1.5k to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Rickaert pulls off. In the foreground pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Dzamastagic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke leading the rest of the peloton behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Cabrera.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/15.jpg

The front 3 hesitate and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Lo Cicero and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Swift go to the front under the 1k banner.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/16.jpg

600 meters pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Lo Cicero cracks and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Swift goes into the lead. Doesn’t look like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Dzamastagic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke will be able to get back into this.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/17.jpg

300 meters. Still pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Swift, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Gaviria, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Ahlstrand are closest.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/18.jpg

100 meters, it looks like the veteran will hang on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/19.jpg

He does, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Gaviria takes 2nd by a narrow margin. Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Ahlstrand, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Grosu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Farantakis in 3rd to 6th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kamberaj, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Harrison, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png De Buyst, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Novardianto complete the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/21.jpg

Gaviria’s second is enough for him to hold onto the GC and points lead. None of the young riders who took time bonuses from the breaks are able to stay with the peloton which means pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Hindley will wear the White Jersey based on placings.
