Tour of Chile Stage 3 - Report

It's the third and final stage here in Chile and it's where the GC will be won and lost. The day starts with a nasty Cat 2 climb to welcome the riders before a camel hump of a Cat 3 and 2 as well as a climb leading up to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/Stage%203%20Profile.png

The favourites are, unsurprisingly, the top climbers. Who will be the best of them today?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/Stage%203%20Favourites.png

We are still on the first climb, although only 2km from the top, and a breakaway of 10 riders has a 3'59 gap back to a very slow Peloton already.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png Iino (+ 2'17)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Arifin (+ 2'51)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Salinas (+ 3'22)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Anguilet (+ 3'22)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Pantano Gomez (+ 3'22)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Bagioli
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Cemazar
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Nzeke
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Akhmaevi
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Rojas

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0060.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Bagioli wins the KOM which gives him a strong lead in the KOM Classification.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0061.jpg

Already only 110km remaining and the gap to the breakaway, which did extend over 5 minutes, is back to 4'22.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0062.jpg

Just a note to how beautiful the scenery is here in Chile as the riders pass through the Sunflower Fields.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0063.jpg

90km to go now and gap has been slashed to 2'14. It appears the Peloton may want to make the catch before we hit the Climbs again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0064.jpg

The Peloton appears to be happy with the more manageable gap now as it's only come down a further 10 seconds in 20 kilometres.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0065.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png Iino wins the KOM on the Cat 3 which takes him to 14 points, only 2 behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Bagioli. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Salinas took 2nd which moves him to 10 points. Their gap with 49km to go is just over the 2 minute mark.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0066.jpg

We're almost at the top of the Cat 2, still 36km from the finish, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Latour has his team working on the front and they have definitely upped the pace. The breakaway is visible and within a minute.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0067.jpg

We may have just missed it but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Salinas won the KOM sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0068.jpg

Also, GC action!! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/akm.png Galta attacked over the crest of the climb and will now look to make time on the downhill. It's a long way to go for the Norwegian!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0069.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/akm.png Galta is caught with 25km remaining by a reduced group of favourites and climbers. Remaining in front, with a 55 second gap, are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Arifin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Salinas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Pantano Gomez.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0070.jpg

These 3 are basically caught seconds later as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Latour launches an attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0071.jpg

But now with 19km to go these groups all come back together and it's a 42 man leading group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0072.jpg

The rain is coming down but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Frankiny doesn't care. He is the next rider to try an attack. Once again, it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Latour who is first to react.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0073.jpg

12.5km now and the previous 2 were caught. It's then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun who goes off on the attack!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0074.jpg

The pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Sauber boys chase this one down too and they're back together under the 10km banner. 25 riders remain in this group. Note that race leader, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Moscon, was dropped earlier and is in a group about 2 minutes behind our leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0075.jpg

5km now to go and, again, it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Frankiny who breathes life into the front of the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0076.jpg

He holds a lead of 26 seconds over the group behind him which is now led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Arndt. Note also that Group pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Moscon is looking like they'll cling onto the back of this favourites group!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0077.jpg

Only 2.5km remaining now and, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Frankiny still ahead, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Beltran is the one to react from this group. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun not leaving his wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0078.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Beltran ups the ante again and is still followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun but no one else can keep with these 2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Frankiny now has these 2 close behind with 2.2km to hold on but it is all downhill!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0079.jpg

We are in the final kilometer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Frankiny is still in the lead with an 8 second gap to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Beltran who looks too strong for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0080.jpg

38 seconds behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun is a group of 13 who are really lacking the urgency here!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0081.jpg

300m from the finish. Can pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Frankiny hold on???

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0082.jpg

YES HE CAN! By half a bike length. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Frankiny takes the stage win ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Beltran. Is that enough for him to win the GC as well?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0083.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun then comes in 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0084.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Bouchard leads the next group over the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0085.jpg

The big surprise here is that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Monsalve were distanced by this group. They will lose their GC places.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0086.jpg

And WOW Shock. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Frankiny has won the GC here by 2 seconds ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Beltran with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun in 3rd. That is a shock.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0087.jpg

It's not really much of a consolation but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Beltran wins the Points Classification ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Frankiny. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Muller 3rd here after his stage win from the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0089.jpg

They would have been hoping for more from their leader but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Salinas comes away with the KOM win. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Beltran is 2nd equal alongside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png Iino, who would also have been hoping for more in the GC, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Bagioli.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0088.jpg

It was fairly close in the end but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun is the best U25 rider here in Chile. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Min and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Barthe 2nd and 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/Chile/Pics/Stage%203/PCM0090.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Sauber win another classification here which isn't too much of a surprise given the efforts of Frankiny and Slagter throughout.
