Tour of Chile Stage 3 - Report
It's the third and final stage here in Chile and it's where the GC will be won and lost. The day starts with a nasty Cat 2 climb to welcome the riders before a camel hump of a Cat 3 and 2 as well as a climb leading up to the finish.
The favourites are, unsurprisingly, the top climbers. Who will be the best of them today?
We are still on the first climb, although only 2km from the top, and a breakaway of 10 riders has a 3'59 gap back to a very slow Peloton already.
Iino (+ 2'17)
Arifin (+ 2'51)
Salinas (+ 3'22)
Anguilet (+ 3'22)
Pantano Gomez (+ 3'22)
Bagioli
Cemazar
Nzeke
Akhmaevi
Rojas
Bagioli wins the KOM which gives him a strong lead in the KOM Classification.
Already only 110km remaining and the gap to the breakaway, which did extend over 5 minutes, is back to 4'22.
Just a note to how beautiful the scenery is here in Chile as the riders pass through the Sunflower Fields.
90km to go now and gap has been slashed to 2'14. It appears the Peloton may want to make the catch before we hit the Climbs again.
The Peloton appears to be happy with the more manageable gap now as it's only come down a further 10 seconds in 20 kilometres.
Iino wins the KOM on the Cat 3 which takes him to 14 points, only 2 behind Bagioli. Salinas took 2nd which moves him to 10 points. Their gap with 49km to go is just over the 2 minute mark.
We're almost at the top of the Cat 2, still 36km from the finish, and Latour has his team working on the front and they have definitely upped the pace. The breakaway is visible and within a minute.
We may have just missed it but Salinas won the KOM sprint.
Also, GC action!! Galta attacked over the crest of the climb and will now look to make time on the downhill. It's a long way to go for the Norwegian!
Galta is caught with 25km remaining by a reduced group of favourites and climbers. Remaining in front, with a 55 second gap, are Arifin, Salinas and Pantano Gomez.
These 3 are basically caught seconds later as Latour launches an attack.
But now with 19km to go these groups all come back together and it's a 42 man leading group.
The rain is coming down but Frankiny doesn't care. He is the next rider to try an attack. Once again, it's Latour who is first to react.
12.5km now and the previous 2 were caught. It's then Padun who goes off on the attack!
The Sauber boys chase this one down too and they're back together under the 10km banner. 25 riders remain in this group. Note that race leader, Moscon, was dropped earlier and is in a group about 2 minutes behind our leaders.
5km now to go and, again, it's Frankiny who breathes life into the front of the race.
He holds a lead of 26 seconds over the group behind him which is now led by Arndt. Note also that Group Moscon is looking like they'll cling onto the back of this favourites group!
Only 2.5km remaining now and, with Frankiny still ahead, Beltran is the one to react from this group. Padun not leaving his wheel.
Beltran ups the ante again and is still followed by Padun but no one else can keep with these 2. Frankiny now has these 2 close behind with 2.2km to hold on but it is all downhill!
We are in the final kilometer and Frankiny is still in the lead with an 8 second gap to Beltran who looks too strong for Padun.
38 seconds behind Padun is a group of 13 who are really lacking the urgency here!
300m from the finish. Can Frankiny hold on???
YES HE CAN! By half a bike length. Frankiny takes the stage win ahead of Beltran. Is that enough for him to win the GC as well?
Padun then comes in 3rd.
Bouchard leads the next group over the line.
The big surprise here is that Guldhammer and Monsalve were distanced by this group. They will lose their GC places.
And WOW . Frankiny has won the GC here by 2 seconds ahead of Beltran with Padun in 3rd. That is a shock.
It's not really much of a consolation but Beltran wins the Points Classification ahead of Frankiny. Muller 3rd here after his stage win from the breakaway.
They would have been hoping for more from their leader but Salinas comes away with the KOM win. Beltran is 2nd equal alongside Iino, who would also have been hoping for more in the GC, and Bagioli.
It was fairly close in the end but Padun is the best U25 rider here in Chile. Min and Barthe 2nd and 3rd.
Sauber win another classification here which isn't too much of a surprise given the efforts of Frankiny and Slagter throughout.
