Cheshire Cycling Tour Stage 2 - Report
Following the rather eventful first stage we now have the first of 3 stages that the Sprinters will be looking to target here in Macclesfield.
There will be a few riders here that need to perform well given the sacrifices their teams made yesterday. Most notably perhaps is Groenewegen but he has some stiff competition, especially from Degenkolb.
Barely 3km into the stage and we pass the first Cat 4 climb. Rutsch takes maximum points.
We then reach the first sprint point for the day. It's Setiawa that wins it ahead of Lampawog. These 2, along with Rutsch have only a 49 second gap early on here.
KOM number 2 and it's Nikiema who wins this one. Quite a few riders out on the attack at the moment is making it tough for the breakaway to establish themselves so far.
125km to go and we have a settled group of 9 riders that has a gap of 3'09 back to the Peloton. Those riders here are:
Nikiema
Nych
Rutsch, Insausti
Lampawog
Katrasnik
Setiawa
Rajapakshage
Moricz
Next KOM and it's a different rider again. Insausti wins this one. His team mate Rutsch moves to 4th in the classification overall.
This time it's Nych who went early and got the points.
62km to go and the gap is about 2'30. We reach another KOM sprint and Nych powers away this time. He and Nikiema are 2nd equal in the KOM, 5 points off the lead.
The gap did stretch out a bit but is now down to 1'56. The work on the front being done by Aegon - Peroni, ISA - Hexacta and Minions.
Clearly been conserving energy for this one as Moricz wins the 2nd last KOM sprint of the day. Nych picks up 2 points and moves to outright 2nd. With 24km to go, the gap is down to a minute.
The breakaway just holds on to their lead long enough to contest the KOM which is won by Lampawog who now moves into 2nd in the KOM, only 1 point off the jersey.
The catch is finally made with 13km to go and it's time for the main sprinters to get themselves into position!
7km to go and it's getting a little messy with teams organising themselves. Aegon are the best placed train in the center of the road, behind them are the Minions army. To the left of the Minions are the opportunists.
The small bump in the road threw the teams a bit but with 2.7km to go this is how it looks.
Santos De Witte Harrison Vesely Degenkolb Pedersen Groenewegen Guerao Van Poppel Saber Holloway Nizzolo Swift Page
1.8km and it descended into chaos as Vesely searches for Lindeman's wheel. The ISA train on the left side looking the favourable place right now.
1.3km and it's now only Harrison in front of Degenkolb, Saber keeping with him.
On the right-hand side, Vesely has given up on his team mate and is drifting across to the left. He has Pedersen and Groenewegen on his wheel.
Guerao and Van Poppel now making their own way between the 2 lines of riders.
700m and Degenkolb in the lead but slowly fading from the looks of it. Behind him it's:
Degenkolb Saber Guerao Groenewegen Van Poppel Vesely Pedersen Holloway
500m and Degenkolb has faded. It looks as if it will be between Guerao, Groenewegen and Van Poppel unless someone behind can make a late burst.
Van Poppel pulling away from the other 2!
And he has enough time to let go of the handlebars and celebrate. Van Poppel takes the win here.
Guerao takes 2nd ahead of Groenewegen.
Holloway narrowly takes 4th ahead of Pedersen and Nizzolo who was a fast finisher.
It's then a whole lot of riders fighting for the lower Top 10 spots but Rowe comes in for 7th. Samalenkov is 8th, Swift is 9th and Liu rounds out the Top 10.
No changes in the GC. We would expect it stays this way until the final stage.
In the KOM, Kasperkiewicz leads by a single point. It would not be a surprise to see the likes of Lampawog or Nych in the breakaway in the coming stages.
In the Points it is level between the 2 stage winners but the Sprinters will have a good chance to take this one tomorrow.
