Cheshire Cycling Tour Stage 2 - Report

Following the rather eventful first stage we now have the first of 3 stages that the Sprinters will be looking to target here in Macclesfield.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%202/Stage%202%20Profile.png

There will be a few riders here that need to perform well given the sacrifices their teams made yesterday. Most notably perhaps is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen but he has some stiff competition, especially from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%202/Stage%202%20Favourites.png

Barely 3km into the stage and we pass the first Cat 4 climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Rutsch takes maximum points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0001.jpg

We then reach the first sprint point for the day. It's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Setiawa that wins it ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Lampawog. These 2, along with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Rutsch have only a 49 second gap early on here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0002.jpg

KOM number 2 and it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Nikiema who wins this one. Quite a few riders out on the attack at the moment is making it tough for the breakaway to establish themselves so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0003.jpg

125km to go and we have a settled group of 9 riders that has a gap of 3'09 back to the Peloton. Those riders here are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Nikiema
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Nych
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Rutsch, Insausti
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Lampawog
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Katrasnik
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Setiawa
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/voy.png Rajapakshage
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Moricz

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0004.jpg

Next KOM and it's a different rider again. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Insausti wins this one. His team mate Rutsch moves to 4th in the classification overall.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0005.jpg

This time it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Nych who went early and got the points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0006.jpg

62km to go and the gap is about 2'30. We reach another KOM sprint and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Nych powers away this time. He and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Nikiema are 2nd equal in the KOM, 5 points off the lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0007.jpg

The gap did stretch out a bit but is now down to 1'56. The work on the front being done by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Aegon - Peroni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png ISA - Hexacta and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Minions.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0008.jpg

Clearly been conserving energy for this one as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Moricz wins the 2nd last KOM sprint of the day. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Nych picks up 2 points and moves to outright 2nd. With 24km to go, the gap is down to a minute.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0009.jpg

The breakaway just holds on to their lead long enough to contest the KOM which is won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Lampawog who now moves into 2nd in the KOM, only 1 point off the jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0010.jpg

The catch is finally made with 13km to go and it's time for the main sprinters to get themselves into position!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0011.jpg

7km to go and it's getting a little messy with teams organising themselves. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Aegon are the best placed train in the center of the road, behind them are the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Minions army. To the left of the Minions are the opportunists.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0012.jpg

The small bump in the road threw the teams a bit but with 2.7km to go this is how it looks.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0013.jpg

1.8km and it descended into chaos as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Vesely searches for Lindeman's wheel. The ISA train on the left side looking the favourable place right now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0014.jpg

1.3km and it's now only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Harrison in front of Degenkolb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Saber keeping with him.
On the right-hand side, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Vesely has given up on his team mate and is drifting across to the left. He has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Pedersen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen on his wheel.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Guerao and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel now making their own way between the 2 lines of riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0016.jpg

700m and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb in the lead but slowly fading from the looks of it. Behind him it's:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Saberpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Gueraopcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegenpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0017.jpg

500m and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb has faded. It looks as if it will be between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Guerao, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel unless someone behind can make a late burst.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel pulling away from the other 2!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0019.jpg

And he has enough time to let go of the handlebars and celebrate. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel takes the win here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0020.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Guerao takes 2nd ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Holloway narrowly takes 4th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Pedersen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Nizzolo who was a fast finisher.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0022.jpg

It's then a whole lot of riders fighting for the lower Top 10 spots but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Rowe comes in for 7th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Samalenkov is 8th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Swift is 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/voy.png Liu rounds out the Top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0023.jpg

No changes in the GC. We would expect it stays this way until the final stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0025.jpg

In the KOM, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Kasperkiewicz leads by a single point. It would not be a surprise to see the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Lampawog or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Nych in the breakaway in the coming stages.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%202/PCM0026.jpg

In the Points it is level between the 2 stage winners but the Sprinters will have a good chance to take this one tomorrow.
