Cheshire Cycling Tour Stage 1 - Report

Plenty of KOM points available throughout the stage to reward those brave enough to go in the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/Stage%201%20Profile.png

A mix of the Top Cobblers are the favourites here which is of no surprise. Two situations to follow will be leadership at Grieg as well as leadership at Tinkoff.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/Stage%201%20Favourites.png

An interesting one to follow early here as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Kasperkiewicz attacks early on. We will have to see how the Peloton reacts to this one.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0001.jpg

The breakaway is almost established as they come up to the first sprint point of the day. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Carcueva wins it ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Bovenhuis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Setiawa.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0002.jpg

Shortly after the intermediate sprint, we now have a settled 13 man breakaway which currently holds a lead of 4'04 over the Peloton. Some interesting riders in here with the one obvious stand-out:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Kasperkiewicz
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Centrone, Ries, Munton
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Bovenhuis
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Kung
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Carcueva
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Stannard
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/voy.png Rajapakshage
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Van Niekerk
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Abdurrahman, Setiawa
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Hofstede

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0003.jpg

A few teams not too happy about the breakaway and they've cut the lead down to 3'30 with 155km remaining.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0004.jpg

The 2nd and final sprint point for the breakaway and this time it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Hofstede who takes maximum points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Bovenhuis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Van Niekerk.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Kasperkiewicz takes his turns at the front of the breakaway without using too much energy from the looks of it. Their lead is 2'37 with 125km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0006.jpg

The first KOM for the breakaway and it's a Cat 4. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Kung takes it ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pfi.png Bovenhuis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/voy.png Rajapakshage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0007.jpg

104km to go and the Peloton now 2'30 behind the breakaway but it's been between 2-2'30 for a while now. Shout out to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Sagiv who put a massive shift in on the front of the Peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0008.jpg

The second KOM is also a Cat 4. This time it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Centrone who takes it ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Kasperkiewicz. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Kung is 3rd. These 3 have said good bye to the rest of the breakaway as they are too strong on the cobbled sections.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0009.jpg

75km to go now and the 3 man breakaway is only a minute ahead of the Peloton where some fairly strong cobblers have been working on the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0010.jpg

A strong pace from the Peloton has ripped the race apart. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Per was, for whatever reason, doing some work at the front before but has been spat out the back. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Luke Rowe is just behind him after a puncture 1km ago.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Kasperkiewicz takes this KOM sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Centrone. The group you see behind is a 25 man Peloton where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Gerts took the last of the points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0012.jpg

This is getting hard to follow as the 25 man group splits and there are now only 13. In the group behind are the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Zepuntke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Baugnies and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Trentin who appears to be supporting Lander…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0013.jpg

Our 13 man group caught the 2 escapees and is 1'54 ahead of the 11 man Group Trentin. In this lead group we have:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Pedersen, Wisniowski, Ringheim, Laporte
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Kamyshev, Senechal, Sulimov
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Kasperkiewicz
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Centrone
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Gerts
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Bewley
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Teunissen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Saber
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Debesay
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Sinkeldam

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0014.jpg

43km now to go and the leading group is down to 13. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Saber and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Debesay the latest casualties.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0015.jpg

Despite the high pace and 38km of tough riding ahead of them, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Sinkeldam wins the KOM sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Kasperkiewicz. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Gerts takes 3rd again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0016.jpg

32km to go and these 2 continue with their pace and now have a 1'04 lead ahead of the 10 man group behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0017.jpg

They appear to have slowed up though and with 25km to go we are back to a 12 man leading group. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Grieg with 4 of these riders and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Tinkoff with 3 obviously in the best positions here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Sinkeldam and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Kasperkiewicz go 1-2 in the KOM again with 18km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0019.jpg

15km to go now and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Tinkoff duo Senechal and Sulimov are dropped alongside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Grieg duo Laporte and Ringheim.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0020.jpg

12km to go and it's left to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Wisniowski to set the pace as he still has Pedersen in the group as well. Also here are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Sinkeldam, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Kasperkiewicz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Kamyshev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Gerts, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Teunissen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Bewley.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0021.jpg

5km left for the 8 and it's the same situation with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Wisniowski still on the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0022.jpg

And finally! With 3.5km to go we have a sign of aggression in this group as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Kamyshev launches an attack on the cobbled section. He clearly doesn't fancy himself in a sprint with some of the names in this group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0023.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Kasperkiewicz may need to be tested after this one as he is the rider to follow. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Wisniowski may be asked to chase this one down and quickly!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0024.jpg

Almost under the kite and these 2 still hold a lead. It is bound to be a fast final kilometre over our finishing cobbled section.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0025.jpg

Very strange scenes as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Kasperkiewicz rolls over the line to take the stage win! The other 6 favourites don't seem too fussed…?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0026.jpg

It's 2nd for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Kamyshev.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0027.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Wisniowski is the quickest on the cobbled section and takes 3rd ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Bewley.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0028.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Pedersen is 5th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Sinkeldam.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0030.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Gerts is 7th while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Teunissen takes 8th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0031.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Debesay is a lonely 9th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0032.jpg

And then it's the domestique quartet, led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Senechal, who take 10th-13th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0033.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Trentin comes through 6 minutes down and outside the Top 20. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Blythe is just behind him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Zepuntke is back here too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0034.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Per is the final rider we will highlight. He comes in 11 minutes behind our stage winner.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0035.jpg

Wait, no he isn't. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/t3a.png Altur is just behind him too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Cheshire/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0036.jpg
