Veenendaal - Veenendaal
As expected, the sprinters are listed as the top favourites. We shall see whether their teams can control the breakaways and the late attacks.
It's an active start to the race, to say the least. The weather is awful here but there are some brave/committed spectators out on the course.
182km to go and we have a front group of 18 (!!) riders that is 3'04 ahead of the Peloton who seem content with the size of it. The riders here are:
Verwilst, Verhelst
Mugisha
Sulvaran
Akhmaevi, Lasinis
Kasa
Misbah, Maccagli
Kanepejs
Sleen, Klaris
Archibald
Sipos, Razumov, Rachid
Jacobs, Grand
160km to go now and the lead is up 3'50. It looks as if the Peloton doesn't want to let them get any further ahead.
113km for the Peloton and the gap is down to 2'30. The work being shared between Binance, Los Pollos, Jura, Minions, Indosat, Podium, Cedevita and Polar.
80km for the Peloton. Nothing has changed really. The Peloton can see the breakaway and the gap is slowly coming down, now at 2'13. Still the same teams doing the work and it's still miserable out there.
60km left for the front group. Their lead is down to 1'40.
The gap is just over a minute with still 42km to go. It's looking like it'll be an early catch which could open the race up for those opportunist riders.
30km to go. The Peloton now very stretched out. Halvorsen spotlighted here is in a bad place. There seems to be quite a few leaders here which isn't good to see:
Nizzolo
Silvestre
Haller
Bonifazio
Havik
Pelucchi
AKA
They'll need some serious support, and fast, to be in contention at the end.
17km to go and the Peloton, led by Binance and Podium has made the catch.
9km and it's an interesting oneā¦ The line here is Kennett followed by his team leader. The good news for the aforementioned sprinters is they've all made it to the front here! But where is all the support???
4.5km to the finish line and we have action! Kwok, Veyhe & Konychev and Yzeiraj all really pushing it at the front. Kennett is like a hawk and follows them tightly but he needs energy for the lead-out.
3km to go! The 4 riders just mentioned look to have a gap. The lack of domestiques at the front is proving troublesome as Noppe looks spent and so will need support ASAP.
1.7km for the Peloton and Ruiz looks to have launched somewhat of a sprint. The 4 man group will be backing themselves here. Someone in the Peloton needs to hit the accelerator real fast.
Konychev benefits from his team mate and launches the sprint. He has the lead with 800m to go ahead of the Aker man. Kwok is no slouch though!
Just behind, some sprinters still trying their luck. Have they left it too late though?
Konychev still leads Yzeiraj. Manninen coming up quickly next to Howard and Kennaugh.
AND KONYCHEV TAKES A HUGE UPSET WIN HERE. His team really played this well with 2 riders in the late attack and they benefit from it immensely! Yzeiraj has to settle for 2nd but his team would be pretty happy with that.
Manninen just pips Kennaugh to the final spot on the podium. These 2 won't be happy as they should have been going for the win rather than 3rd. Silvestre is 5th and Saber 6th.
Howard 7th and Veyhe makes it even better for Assa Abloy with 8th. Ewan launched his sprint far too late for 9th while Reinhardt, in a similar position, rounds out the Top 10.
A reminder of your winner. It's Konychev for Assa Abloy! You'd have to think those celebrations will last long into the night.
