USA Pro Cycling Challenge - Stage 2
USA Pro Cycling Challenge - Stage 2

Stage Profile

Stage 2 is time for the sprinters. The first road stage is shorter at only 134 km and is as flat as can be. Still the organizers have put 5 from a maximum of 16 KOM points possible in this race on today's stage. So definitely something important for the breakaway.

Not wasting anytime are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/sva.png Oss and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bns.png Gough.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bwt.png Szarka is trying to join them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/esc.png Joeaar and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bwt.png Visser tried also, but the peloton is happy with just the 3 riders for now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hlf.png Novikov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Jimenez Retana are met with the same fate.

A number of those failed attempts nearly brought back the breakaway, until pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/taf.png Johannessen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Jorgenson were finally able to break through. The peloton is now relenting, the 5 riders with a 2'14'' gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/taf.png Johannessen wins the first of three intermediate sprints ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bns.png Gough and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bwt.png Szarka.

More important today is this "KOM" sprint and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Jorgenson makes sure he'll wear the KOM jersey tomorrow. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bns.png Gough 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bwt.png Szarka 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bwt.png Szarka wins the 2nd intermediate sprint just ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/taf.png Johannessen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bns.png Gough. 56 km to go and the gap stands at 1'59''.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/taf.png Johannessen wins the final sprint with 26 km to go. The peloton are now less than a minute behind.

The escapees are caught with 10 km to go thanks to the efforts from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png Trans, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Gjensidige and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Aramco.

Here is the layout with 3 km to go:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Ratto
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Appollonio
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Boivinpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hlf.png Vingerlingpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png Vanspeybrouckpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Castrillo
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pns.png Matthewspcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Thomas
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mck.png Keoughpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Jakobsen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/taf.png Ranneriespcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Thomas with a powerful leadout for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Jakobsen which forces everyone else to try and get on their wheels.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Appollonio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png Pibernik closed that gap, but the later was actually preparing a sprint for his team leader. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png Korosec and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png Selig burst ahead, but the German has trouble following his leadout.

This wasn't really a leadout, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png Selig does take over with 600 m to go. Behind there are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Jakobsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pns.png Matthews, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Appollonio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hlf.png Vingerling.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png Selig running out of steam now with 300 m to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pns.png Matthews hits the front with only 100 m left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hlf.png Vingerling and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Appollonio are next in line.

But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pns.png Michael Matthews finishes off the sprint and wins the stage! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hlf.png Vingerling comes 2nd, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Appollonio 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Boivin 5th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Jakobsen 6th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mck.png Keough 7th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png Selig with his bizzare leadout in 8th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/taf.png Ranneries 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tlt.png Korosec 10th.

With his stage victory pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pns.png Matthews moves into 6th in the GC, most of the other sprinters still have a lot of time to make up. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/adp.png Cosnefroy continues to lead the race. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Jorgenson leads the KOM classification and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mck.png Granigan takes over as the best young rider.
