Stage 18 is a mountain time-trial up the Passo del Tonale. The riders faced this climb yesterday, but will tackle it from a different direction in an all out effort against the clock. Because this is a mountain TT we will start our coverage with the GC riders, who should be the favourites for today's stage. The current leader at the finish is Goos.
We start with Bernal who is 26'' slower at the 2nd time check to Geoghegan Hart.
23'55''
Meanwhile we also have word that Reis has equaled the best time on the first check.
10'17''
Barguil is 2nd fastest on the 2nd time check, 16'' slower than Reis.
23'26''
Geoghegan Hart clocks the new best time at the finish. He improves Goos's time by 4''.
49'44''
Kudus is at the first time check. He's only 4'' slower than Reis which seems like a good time on the flatter section of this course.
10'21''
Chiarello is across the 2nd time check. He's losing 23'' to Sicard who is a dangerous rider behind him in the GC.
23'55''
Dombrowski started today with a 26'' lead over Kudus. 12 of those are gone after the first time check.
10'33''
Areruya started the day in 7th place, but by the 2nd time check he's already behind Berhane and Chiarello.
24'45''
Herklotz has passed the first time check. He's only 2'' slower than Reis.
10'19''
Eastman is a good TTer and the riders behind him on GC are not a threat. Yet he's not gaining on Guldhammer either on whom he'd need to make up significant time. 4th best time at the 2nd check.
23'30''
It's a similar situation for Morton who's only behind Reis at the 2nd time check.
23'15''
Kudus continues his good start and sets the new best time at the 2nd check, 3'' faster than Reis.
23'07''
Bernal has a subpar day as he makes it to the top, but he's done enough to keep Preidler at bay.
50'49''
Meanwhile Dombrowski is through the 2nd check point, 17'' behind Kudus. He has 9'' left to spare.
23'24''
Meintjes has no issue defending 14th place in GC. In fact he comes in with the 3rd best time.
49'54''
Herklotz is on a mission, he wants to show everyone who's boss. The German is 4'' faster than Kudus at the time check.
23'03''
Reis finishes his ride with the new best time. On a different level than Geoghegan Hart and the first rider below 49 minutes.
48'50''
Barguil comes in with 2nd best time. Doing enough to hold off Reis in the GC.
49'04''
Sicard not nearly as fast as Barguil, but enough to protect his GC spot from his compatriot.
49'42''
Formolo on the other hand has had a bad day. He'll have to concede his place to Sicard, Barguil and Reis.
51'35''
Our camera missed Chiarello, but we believe he just managed to hold off Sicard for 9th place.
But Berhane who was doing decently on the 2nd check seems to have suffered and we believe he's lost his GC position to both Chiarello and Sicard.
50'52''
Areruya is having an even worse day as he's about to be passed by Eastman. The Rwandan will fall out of the top 10.
51'36''
Guldhammer matches Eastman's time at the finish. A perfect defence of his 4th place position.
49'44''
Morton climbed really well in the last section. He sets the new best time, 21'' ahead of Reis!
48'28''
It doesn't last long though. Kudus with a strong effort through all the time checks as he beats Morton's time by a further 18''.
48'10''
But Dombrowski saved his best effort for the last part as well. He comes in 3rd, 23'' behind Kudus. Which means he retains 2nd in GC by a mere 3''.
48'33''
Herklotz though shall not be denied. He improved on Kudus's time by another 11'', claiming another stage win at this Giro d'Italia.
47'59''
Herklotz further tightens his grip on the maglia rosa. With only one mountain stage remaining there is only some much that can change in the GC. The battle between Dombrowski and Kudus is obviously on a knife edge. 4th-6th looks pretty set. Then we have Sicard in 7th with Chiarello on the same time. In fact from 7th through to Formolo in 13th the gap is less than 2 minutes. There is the most potential for a big reshuffle of places before Milano.
Kemboi still has a mathematical chance to reclaim ciclamino, but the German looks to be in a great position there. In fact he's currently on course for a clean sweep. The stage today was treated as a single category 1 climb. With his win he's now the new KOM leader as well. Areruya is pretty much locked in as the best young rider.
