Giro d'Italia - Stage 18

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S18/profile.jpg

Stage 18 is a mountain time-trial up the Passo del Tonale. The riders faced this climb yesterday, but will tackle it from a different direction in an all out effort against the clock. Because this is a mountain TT we will start our coverage with the GC riders, who should be the favourites for today's stage. The current leader at the finish is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Goos.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S18/PCM0001.jpg

We start with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Bernal who is 26'' slower at the 2nd time check to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Geoghegan Hart.

23'55''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S18/PCM0002.jpg

Meanwhile we also have word that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Reis has equaled the best time on the first check.

10'17''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S18/PCM0003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Barguil is 2nd fastest on the 2nd time check, 16'' slower than Reis.

23'26''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S18/PCM0004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Geoghegan Hart clocks the new best time at the finish. He improves Goos's time by 4''.

49'44''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S18/PCM0005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Kudus is at the first time check. He's only 4'' slower than Reis which seems like a good time on the flatter section of this course.

10'21''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S18/PCM0006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chiarello is across the 2nd time check. He's losing 23'' to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Sicard who is a dangerous rider behind him in the GC.

23'55''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S18/PCM0007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Dombrowski started today with a 26'' lead over Kudus. 12 of those are gone after the first time check.

10'33''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S18/PCM0008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Areruya started the day in 7th place, but by the 2nd time check he's already behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Berhane and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chiarello.

24'45''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S18/PCM0009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz has passed the first time check. He's only 2'' slower than Reis.

10'19''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S18/PCM0010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Eastman is a good TTer and the riders behind him on GC are not a threat. Yet he's not gaining on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer either on whom he'd need to make up significant time. 4th best time at the 2nd check.

23'30''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S18/PCM0011.jpg

It's a similar situation for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Morton who's only behind Reis at the 2nd time check.

23'15''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S18/PCM0012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Kudus continues his good start and sets the new best time at the 2nd check, 3'' faster than Reis.

23'07''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S18/PCM0013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Bernal has a subpar day as he makes it to the top, but he's done enough to keep pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Preidler at bay.

50'49''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S18/PCM0014.jpg

Meanwhile pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Dombrowski is through the 2nd check point, 17'' behind Kudus. He has 9'' left to spare.

23'24''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S18/PCM0015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Meintjes has no issue defending 14th place in GC. In fact he comes in with the 3rd best time.

49'54''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S18/PCM0016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz is on a mission, he wants to show everyone who's boss. The German is 4'' faster than Kudus at the time check.

23'03''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S18/PCM0017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Reis finishes his ride with the new best time. On a different level than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Geoghegan Hart and the first rider below 49 minutes.

48'50''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S18/PCM0018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Barguil comes in with 2nd best time. Doing enough to hold off Reis in the GC.

49'04''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S18/PCM0019.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Sicard not nearly as fast as Barguil, but enough to protect his GC spot from his compatriot.

49'42''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S18/PCM0020.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Formolo on the other hand has had a bad day. He'll have to concede his place to Sicard, Barguil and Reis.

51'35''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S18/PCM0021.jpg

Our camera missed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chiarello, but we believe he just managed to hold off Sicard for 9th place.

But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Berhane who was doing decently on the 2nd check seems to have suffered and we believe he's lost his GC position to both Chiarello and Sicard.

50'52''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S18/PCM0022.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Areruya is having an even worse day as he's about to be passed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Eastman. The Rwandan will fall out of the top 10.

51'36''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S18/PCM0023.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer matches pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Eastman's time at the finish. A perfect defence of his 4th place position.

49'44''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S18/PCM0024.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Morton climbed really well in the last section. He sets the new best time, 21'' ahead of Reis!

48'28''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S18/PCM0025.jpg

It doesn't last long though. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Kudus with a strong effort through all the time checks as he beats Morton's time by a further 18''.

48'10''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S18/PCM0026.jpg

But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Dombrowski saved his best effort for the last part as well. He comes in 3rd, 23'' behind Kudus. Which means he retains 2nd in GC by a mere 3''.

48'33''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S18/PCM0027.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz though shall not be denied. He improved on Kudus's time by another 11'', claiming another stage win at this Giro d'Italia.

47'59''

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz further tightens his grip on the maglia rosa. With only one mountain stage remaining there is only some much that can change in the GC. The battle between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Dombrowski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Kudus is obviously on a knife edge. 4th-6th looks pretty set. Then we have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Sicard in 7th with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chiarello on the same time. In fact from 7th through to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Formolo in 13th the gap is less than 2 minutes. There is the most potential for a big reshuffle of places before Milano.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi still has a mathematical chance to reclaim ciclamino, but the German looks to be in a great position there. In fact he's currently on course for a clean sweep. The stage today was treated as a single category 1 climb. With his win he's now the new KOM leader as well. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Areruya is pretty much locked in as the best young rider.
