Giro d'Italia - Stage 17

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S17/profile.jpg

If the previous two mountain stages were important GC deciders, then today looks tailor made for a breakaway win. A long stage of 226 km, but the two big climbs are followed by long descents. Let's see how it plays out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S17/PCM0001.jpg

The peloton isn't too fussed about allowing riders going in the breakaway today. About 30 km into the stage, after numerous attacks, a breakaway group of 13 riders is established with a healthy 3'43'' gap. The riders are:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Hepburn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Preidler

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S17/PCM0002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Amaysim and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Evonik are taking the chasing duties today. The breakaway's gap has fallen under 3 minutes with 130 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S17/PCM0003.jpg

The breakaway begin climbing the category 1 test today, the Passo del Tonale. 14 km with a 6.5% average. The peloton are just about 2 minutes behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S17/PCM0004.jpg

As expected pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Hepburn had to let go of the breakaway group early in the climb. The next one to go backwards now is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Kiriakidis.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S17/PCM0005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Rucigaj, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Nych and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Villella are the next 3 riders dropped. 6 km to the top of the climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S17/PCM0006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Geoghegan Hart, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Burke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Iturria and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Vlasov lose contact about 2 km from the top of the climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S17/PCM0007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Carboni is on another strong day it seems as the Italian bags 16 pts at the top of the Passo del Tonale. Seems like only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Kirsch stands a chance of following him. Still 60 km to the finish line though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S17/PCM0008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Areruya makes a move from the peloton as he tops the climb with a minute advantage. There were no more KOM points available. It can't be a mistake, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Areruya looks like he's making a brave attempt for a stage win!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S17/PCM0009.jpg

Unfortunately the Rwandan isn't a great descender and there was way too much man power in the peloton to allow this move to go. But the increase in pace has now split the peloton to pieces on this descent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S17/PCM0010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Carboni and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Kirsch start the final climb of the day. Category 2 climb to Aprica. About a minute behind them are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Preidler and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Mavrikakis, then further back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Iturria and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Vlasov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S17/PCM0011.jpg

The peloton are getting close to catching the group with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Preidler and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Vlasov. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Carboni and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Kirsch are a further 2 minutes ahead. 21 km of the stage remains.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S17/PCM0012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Areruya tries another attack! This time with 5 km to the top of Aprica and he's joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chiarello.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S17/PCM0013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Kudus has also decided to get involved in this move, which has sent off alarm bells for all the favourites. The domestiques are chasing hard now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S17/PCM0014.jpg

Back to the front of the race now. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Carboni puts in an acceleration and collect 10 more KOM points which will put his just behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Areruya in the KOM classification. In the meantime the Italian is also trying to shake of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Kirsch in search of a stage win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S17/PCM0015.jpg

The trio of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Kudus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Areruya and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chiarello get over the top of the climb with a small gap. The peloton is around 80 riders strong. The other favourites are relying on their helpers to bring this group back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S17/PCM0016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Kirsch catches up with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Carboni with 9 km to go. Remember the finish is flat, perhaps with a slight incline. These two are quite similar in sprinting ability.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S17/PCM0017.jpg

Our leaders are done with the descent and are in the last 5 km. It's clear these two will contest the stage win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S17/PCM0018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Kudus is trying to keep this going and eek out some seconds from here. 3rd place bonus seconds are also available.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S17/PCM0019.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Kirsch ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Carboni under the flamme rouge.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S17/PCM0020.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Kudus is caught, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Areruya now launches a counter attack!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S17/PCM0021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Kirsch has the inside line and starts the sprint with 800 m to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S17/PCM0022.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Kirsch still slightly ahead with 400 m to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S17/PCM0023.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Carboni can't seem to get ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Kirsch, less than 200 m to go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S17/PCM0024.jpg

But he manages it at the very end! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Giovanni Carboni wins stage 17 of the Giro d'Italia! Heartbreak for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Kirsch to lose it on the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S17/PCM0025.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Areruya just manages to roll over in 3rd place, but with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Yates sprinting from behind there are no time gaps given.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S17/PCM0026.jpg

It's a sprint of very different riders for 5th place, but it's the sprinter pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Eislers that is 5th. Race leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz 6th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Formolo 7th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Barguil 8th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Bettiol 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Olesen in 10th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S17/PCM0027.jpg

Despite the efforts of some riders, as expected today's stage did not yield any GC changes. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz remains in the lead ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Dombrowski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Kudus. The German extends his lead in points classification, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Areruya continues to wear the maglia azzurra and is the best young rider.
