Giro d'Italia - Stage 16

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/profile.jpg

Another day another mountain stage in the Giro. Stage isn't as long and hard as yesterday's stage. There are 3 categorised climbs today spread across the stage profile. We don't expect to see fireworks until the final climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/PCM0001.jpg

Another rainy day at the Giro as we see attacker go up the road from the start. A big group of riders from the off:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Bernal
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Nesset
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Mavrikakis
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Geoghegan Hart
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Kiriakidis
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Hagen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Peters
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Serrano
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Smit

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/PCM0002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Sosa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Goos bridge across and now we have another group coming up with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Habtemichael, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Konrad, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Ciccone, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Mamykin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Burke.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/PCM0003.jpg

A big group of 17 riders in today's breakaway, but the peloton are keeping them at 2'24'' for now. They'll soon start the first climb of the day. Category 1 Passo San Pellegrino, 18 km in length with a 6.2%.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/PCM0004.jpg

Rain turns to snow in the high mountains as they top the Passo San Pellegrino. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Peters is the rider with notable KOM points already and as the most willing, he wins 16 points without too much resistance. This puts him into virtual 3rd in the KOM classification. The peloton are 3'32'' behind the breakaway at this point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/PCM0005.jpg

It's a long trek through the valleys before the next climb. The peloton lead by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Mapei and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png King Power are 2'40'' behind the escapees. 72 km of the stage remaining.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/PCM0006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Kiriakidis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Konrad, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Sosa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Serrano, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Geoghegan Hart and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Smit are struggling on this shorter, but very steep category 2 climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/PCM0007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Peters was either poorly positioned or simply didn't have the legs for this one. He collects only 2 pts. 47 km to go. A long descent and some flat road now before the final climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/PCM0008.jpg

The breakaway start the final climb up to Refugio Panarotta. It's a category 1 climb of 17 km at 7.6% average. Doesn't get overly steep, a very steady climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Burke feels like he has to go early, but the peloton is less than 3 minutes behind. It's unlikely someone from the breakaway stays ahead of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/PCM0009.jpg

The peloton were steadily gaining on the breakaway. Just as they were about to catch them, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz attacks with over 8 km to the top!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/PCM0010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz makes his way through the breakaway and opens up a little gap. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Kudus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Morton pick up the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/PCM0011.jpg

9th in GC pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chiarello in difficulty already at this point. He's been terrific in this Giro so far, but he looks to be on a bad day today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/PCM0012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Reis is another rider that's losing the wheel with 5 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/PCM0013.jpg

Back to the front of the race now. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz is holding a 41'' gap to a group of favorites now consisting of:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Dombrowski
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Kudus
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Morton
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Eastman
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Barguil
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Sicard

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/PCM0014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Kudus wants to go alone though. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Morton is trying to follow, but yesterday's hero pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Dombrowski doesn't seem to have the same legs today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/PCM0015.jpg

Less than 2 km to go for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz. He's keeping pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Kudus at bay, who in turn is keeping pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Morton at bay by a similar margin. The pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Dombrowski is around a 1'40'' behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/PCM0016.jpg

It's a comfortable victory for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz in the end. What a response after a bad day yesterday by the German!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/PCM0017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Kudus in the end loses 1'05'' to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz, but for him it's more important what's he gained on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Dombrowski?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/PCM0018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Morton is steadily improving in this Giro, but hasn't quite shown he can challenge the others, he finishes 1'55'' behind Herklotz.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/PCM0019.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Eastman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Barguil and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Dombrowski across the line 2'16'' behind the winning time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/PCM0020.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Sicard has another underwhelming performance as he finishes 8th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chiarello who rode his own tempo which proved the correct decision for him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Formolo rounds out the top 10 on the same time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/PCM0021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Areruya suffers a bit today, but limits his losses to 3'05''. The next group with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Meintjes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Preidler and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Berhane is at 3'45''. The rider who struggled the most today was pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Reis, losing 4'39''.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/PCM0022.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz strengthens his lead on the maglia rosa. In fact he gained more on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Dombrowski today than what he lost yesterday. The American is now more likely in a battle with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Kudus for 2nd place, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Morton is now more comfortable in 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz has now taken over the lead in points classification as well and with 3 more mountain stages remaining, he looks a better bet than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi to put on the ciclamino jersey at the end in Milano. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Areruya keeps hold of KOM and U25 jerseys.
