Giro d'Italia - Stage 14

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S14/profile.jpg

The 2nd week of the Giro ends with another transition stage before we head into the high mountains. There are 5 categorized climbs in the 2nd half of today's stage. Looks like another opportunity for the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S14/PCM0001.jpg

The riders head out of beautiful Venice today and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman wastes no time with his attack. He's probably looking to grab more KOM points and perhaps another stage victory if possible.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S14/PCM0002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Chernetskiy is looking to make his way across, as do pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Erdenebat, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Belevics and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Villella.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S14/PCM0003.jpg

Two very different riders in profile and size look to join up in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Mavrikakis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Affini.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S14/PCM0004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Vesuvio have missed out on putting a rider up the road and are now chasing everyone down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S14/PCM0005.jpg

They reduced the gap first and are now sending pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Pelikan in the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S14/PCM0006.jpg

With the peloton then slowing down it allowed also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Sulvaran, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Hepburn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Quita and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Bax to get away. Tough luck for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Mavrikakis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Affini, wrong place wrong time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S14/PCM0007.jpg

The breakaway is set with 10 riders then and with 100 km left in the stage and their gap over 5 minutes. It's easy to figure out the peloton are resting up for tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S14/PCM0008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman wins the first of five KOM sprints. His main competitors in this breakaway are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Bax who didn't score any points now and teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Villella. We've seen both of those two riding at the front, so both must have their own goals for today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S14/PCM0009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Quita wins the 2nd sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Villella. We see the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Aegon riders and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Belevics struggling to follow on the climbs.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S14/PCM0010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Chernetskiy takes the 3rd KOM ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Quita and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman. The Serbian will remain the KOM leader tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S14/PCM0011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Chernetskiy with the 4th KOM in the same order as the previous. While the others were starting to falter on the previous climb we also see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Bax and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Villella distanced. 25 km to go, moves from here on out can decide the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S14/PCM0012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman had to make an effort, but he's a good descender and he makes his way back to the other two for the final climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S14/PCM0013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Quita wins the final KOM, but the 3 leaders are still together. 12 km to go, downhill then a flat finish to the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S14/PCM0014.jpg

Neither pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman nor pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Chernetskiy are good sprinters, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Quita is. So the Serbian is attacking on the flat now, trying to put the Filipino in trouble.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S14/PCM0015.jpg

Under 5 km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Quita was able to close the gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S14/PCM0016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman leading pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Quita and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Chernetskiy into the final kilometer. The strongest sprinter will win the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S14/PCM0017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Quita starts the sprint with 700 m to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman responds alongside him, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Chernetskiy takes the Filipino's wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S14/PCM0018.jpg

300 m to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Quita is slightly ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S14/PCM0019.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Ronnilan Quita does indeed show he's the strongest sprinter amongst the three. He wins stage 14 of the Giro! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman has to settle for 2nd place and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Chernetskiy for 3rd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Bax later comes in 4th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Villella in 5th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S14/PCM0020.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Hepburn wins the "sprint" for 6th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Pelikan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Sulvaran.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S14/PCM0021.jpg

We almost forgot, but we have to look at the peloton. And we see an attack on the final climb by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Areruya! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chiarello are following the move.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S14/PCM0022.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Areruya doesn't get far, but that attack has taken its toll. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Reis has lost contact with the other favourites!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S14/PCM0023.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Areruya is not done! One more attack on the flat! He wants to get something from today and if nothing else he's putting time into pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Reis. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chiarello smartly following again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S14/PCM0024.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chiarello comes across the line in 9th place and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Areruya in 10th, but neither of them have been given a gap to the other favourites.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S14/PCM0025.jpg

Except for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Reis. The Portuguese rolls through the line 1'34'' behind the favourites.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S14/PCM0026.jpg

So the big news after today's stage is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Reis dropping from 10th to 12th in GC. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz stays in pink, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi in ciclamino, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman in the maglia azzurra and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Areruya in white.
