The 2nd week of the Giro ends with another transition stage before we head into the high mountains. There are 5 categorized climbs in the 2nd half of today's stage. Looks like another opportunity for the breakaway.
The riders head out of beautiful Venice today and Roman wastes no time with his attack. He's probably looking to grab more KOM points and perhaps another stage victory if possible.
Chernetskiy is looking to make his way across, as do Erdenebat, Belevics and Villella.
Two very different riders in profile and size look to join up in Mavrikakis and Affini.
Vesuvio have missed out on putting a rider up the road and are now chasing everyone down.
They reduced the gap first and are now sending Pelikan in the breakaway.
With the peloton then slowing down it allowed also Sulvaran, Hepburn, Quita and Bax to get away. Tough luck for Mavrikakis and Affini, wrong place wrong time.
The breakaway is set with 10 riders then and with 100 km left in the stage and their gap over 5 minutes. It's easy to figure out the peloton are resting up for tomorrow.
Roman wins the first of five KOM sprints. His main competitors in this breakaway are Bax who didn't score any points now and teammate Villella. We've seen both of those two riding at the front, so both must have their own goals for today.
Quita wins the 2nd sprint ahead of Roman and Villella. We see the Aegon riders and Belevics struggling to follow on the climbs.
Chernetskiy takes the 3rd KOM ahead of Quita and Roman. The Serbian will remain the KOM leader tomorrow.
Chernetskiy with the 4th KOM in the same order as the previous. While the others were starting to falter on the previous climb we also see Roman, Bax and Villella distanced. 25 km to go, moves from here on out can decide the stage.
Roman had to make an effort, but he's a good descender and he makes his way back to the other two for the final climb.
Quita wins the final KOM, but the 3 leaders are still together. 12 km to go, downhill then a flat finish to the line.
Neither Roman nor Chernetskiy are good sprinters, but Quita is. So the Serbian is attacking on the flat now, trying to put the Filipino in trouble.
Under 5 km to go. Quita was able to close the gap.
Roman leading Quita and Chernetskiy into the final kilometer. The strongest sprinter will win the stage.
Quita starts the sprint with 700 m to go. Roman responds alongside him, Chernetskiy takes the Filipino's wheel.
300 m to go and Quita is slightly ahead of Roman.
And Ronnilan Quita does indeed show he's the strongest sprinter amongst the three. He wins stage 14 of the Giro! Roman has to settle for 2nd place and Chernetskiy for 3rd. Bax later comes in 4th and Villella in 5th.
Hepburn wins the "sprint" for 6th ahead of Pelikan and Sulvaran.
We almost forgot, but we have to look at the peloton. And we see an attack on the final climb by Areruya! Guldhammer and Chiarello are following the move.
Areruya doesn't get far, but that attack has taken its toll. Reis has lost contact with the other favourites!
And Areruya is not done! One more attack on the flat! He wants to get something from today and if nothing else he's putting time into Reis. Chiarello smartly following again.
Chiarello comes across the line in 9th place and Areruya in 10th, but neither of them have been given a gap to the other favourites.
Except for Reis. The Portuguese rolls through the line 1'34'' behind the favourites.
So the big news after today's stage is Reis dropping from 10th to 12th in GC. Herklotz stays in pink, Kemboi in ciclamino, Roman in the maglia azzurra and Areruya in white.
