Giro d'Italia - Stage 12

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/profile.jpg

Stage 12, if there is one mountain everyone in cycling fears, it's Monte Zoncolan. That is where today's stage finishes. There are two cat. 2 climbs before to warm the climbers legs and give the breakaway a chance at some KOM points. Expect the favourites to contest the stage victory today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0001.jpg

As expected a lot of interest for going into today's breakaway. KOM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Bax is almost a must these days and he's joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Serrano. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Kangert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Sulvaran and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Rikunov also on the move behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0002.jpg

The 2nd group is joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Burke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Kruijswijk, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Peters, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Parra Bustamente and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Lastra.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Mavrikakis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Nych and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Dina are also making their way across.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Quita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Jang and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Pedrero tried to strike out from the peloton, but all of them were denied.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0005.jpg

Another attack now by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Destribois, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Ioannidis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Carboni. Not sure they can get away though. The pace has been high throughout this stage. Even the original breakaway are barely holding a 1 minute gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0006.jpg

Still, everyone wants a piece of this stage. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Chernetskiy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Rucigaj, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Matte and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Giannoutsos trying now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Chernetskiy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Rucigaj made a big effort, but could never bridge the gap. They're now back in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0008.jpg

80 km into the stage the group of 13 breakaway riders pass the intermediate sprint. Their gap is under 2 minutes and isn't growing out at this point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0009.jpg

The peloton's pace isn't slowing down as we start to approach the first climb of the day. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Farfetch have been doing a lot of the work. The first casualty from the breakaway is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Kangert who's dropped back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Serrano is the next one done as they start climbing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0011.jpg

A decent climber like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Parra Bustamente lets go of the wheel. 10 riders remain at the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0012.jpg

Game over now for the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Rikunov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Sulvaran and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Nych.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0013.jpg

The steepest part of the climb is here, the breakaway is splitting into pieces. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Lastra and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Peters look the strongest.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Peters beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Lastra to the top to collect 10 pts. Behind them the remaining escapees pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Kruijswijk, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Burke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Mavrikakis take the remaining points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Peters and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Lastra continue on their own. Everyone else is too far back to wait for them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Kruijswijk, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Mavrikakis and now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Burke are about to be caught before the penultimate climb with 30 km of the stage remaining.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Peters and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Lastra are still going strong and make it to the top of this climb. The duo have 2'48'' advantage over the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Peters is currently the virtual KOM leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman makes an effort from the peloton and while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Konrad had the smart idea of stopping him. He couldn't prevent the Serbian from taking 6 pts and taking over the KOM lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0019.jpg

Here it is, the start of the dreaded Monte Zoncolan! 10 km with an average gradient of 11.9% and maximum gradient of 22.6%. A really brutal climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Peters now leaves pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Lastra behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0020.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Generali are leading the pack, chasing down pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman who continued his attack from the previous climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Sicard doesn't waste time and attacks with 6.6 km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz follows as they quickly pass pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Lastra. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Dombrowski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Kudus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Morton are the front behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0022.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz decides it's beneficial to work with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Sicard here. The two don't look to be ahead by much, but the clock says 49'' on these steep roads.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0023.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz proves stronger than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Sicard as he catches up to the last breakaway rider pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Peters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0024.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Dombrowski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Kudus seem to be sharing the workload of chasing with 5 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0025.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Peters and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Sicard are 40'' in front of the favourites and 40'' behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz as they tackle the steepest part of 22%.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0026.jpg

Speaking of favourites, an elite group has formed now. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Bernal and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Meintjes are the two that are falling behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0027.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Sicard is caught now and only a group of 7 are now behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Dombrowski
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Kudus
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Morton
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Sicard
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Barguil
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Eastman
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Berhane

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0028.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Barguil and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Eastman crack now, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz maintains around a 1 minute advantage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0029.jpg

After those riders there are separate groups of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chiarello, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Reis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer. Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Formolo with two teammates supporting him and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Kirsch and then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Areruya.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0030.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz is in the final kilometer. He looks like he can keep this pace going, unlikely anyone catches the German.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0031.jpg

He can really take his time to celebrate. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Silvio Herklotz wins stage 12 and conquers Monte Zoncolan!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0032.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Kudus sprints to 2nd ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Dombrowski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Morton. They all come in 55'' behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0033.jpg

5th place goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Sicard, 6th to today's very strong ride by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Berhane. Both are at 1'31''.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0034.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Eastman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Barguil are 7th and 8th with a gap of 2'13''.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0035.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Reis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chiarello distance pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer at the finish. 2'57'' and 3'27'' for the Dane.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0036.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Formolo comes in with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Kirsch at 3'48''. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Areruya 4'19'' and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Bernal 5'22''. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Meintjes and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Preidler is the biggest losers today both at around 6 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S12/PCM0037.jpg

GC wise pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz extends his lead, now 2 minutes ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Dombrowski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Kudus. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Sicard moves into 5th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Morton into 6th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Berhane and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Barguil both move into the top 10 also.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi remains the ciclamino leader, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz has now moved into 3rd. The German also moves into 2nd in the KOM classification, which now lead by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Areruya has done just enough today to move back into the maglia bianca as the best young rider.
