Stage 12, if there is one mountain everyone in cycling fears, it's Monte Zoncolan. That is where today's stage finishes. There are two cat. 2 climbs before to warm the climbers legs and give the breakaway a chance at some KOM points. Expect the favourites to contest the stage victory today.
As expected a lot of interest for going into today's breakaway. KOM leader Bax is almost a must these days and he's joined by Serrano. Kangert, Sulvaran and Rikunov also on the move behind them.
The 2nd group is joined by Burke, Kruijswijk, Peters, Parra Bustamente and Lastra.
Mavrikakis, Nych and Dina are also making their way across.
Quita, Jang and Pedrero tried to strike out from the peloton, but all of them were denied.
Another attack now by Destribois, Roman, Ioannidis and Carboni. Not sure they can get away though. The pace has been high throughout this stage. Even the original breakaway are barely holding a 1 minute gap.
Still, everyone wants a piece of this stage. Chernetskiy, Rucigaj, Matte and Giannoutsos trying now.
Chernetskiy and Rucigaj made a big effort, but could never bridge the gap. They're now back in the peloton.
80 km into the stage the group of 13 breakaway riders pass the intermediate sprint. Their gap is under 2 minutes and isn't growing out at this point.
The peloton's pace isn't slowing down as we start to approach the first climb of the day. Farfetch have been doing a lot of the work. The first casualty from the breakaway is Kangert who's dropped back.
Serrano is the next one done as they start climbing.
A decent climber like Parra Bustamente lets go of the wheel. 10 riders remain at the front.
Game over now for the likes of Rikunov, Sulvaran and Nych.
The steepest part of the climb is here, the breakaway is splitting into pieces. Lastra and Peters look the strongest.
Peters beats Lastra to the top to collect 10 pts. Behind them the remaining escapees Kruijswijk, Burke and Mavrikakis take the remaining points.
Peters and Lastra continue on their own. Everyone else is too far back to wait for them.
Kruijswijk, Mavrikakis and now Burke are about to be caught before the penultimate climb with 30 km of the stage remaining.
Peters and Lastra are still going strong and make it to the top of this climb. The duo have 2'48'' advantage over the peloton. Peters is currently the virtual KOM leader.
Roman makes an effort from the peloton and while Konrad had the smart idea of stopping him. He couldn't prevent the Serbian from taking 6 pts and taking over the KOM lead.
Here it is, the start of the dreaded Monte Zoncolan! 10 km with an average gradient of 11.9% and maximum gradient of 22.6%. A really brutal climb. Peters now leaves Lastra behind him.
Generali are leading the pack, chasing down Roman who continued his attack from the previous climb.
Sicard doesn't waste time and attacks with 6.6 km to go. Herklotz follows as they quickly pass Lastra. Dombrowski, Kudus and Morton are the front behind them.
Herklotz decides it's beneficial to work with Sicard here. The two don't look to be ahead by much, but the clock says 49'' on these steep roads.
Herklotz proves stronger than Sicard as he catches up to the last breakaway rider Peters.
Dombrowski and Kudus seem to be sharing the workload of chasing with 5 km to go.
Peters and Sicard are 40'' in front of the favourites and 40'' behind Herklotz as they tackle the steepest part of 22%.
Speaking of favourites, an elite group has formed now. Bernal and Meintjes are the two that are falling behind.
Sicard is caught now and only a group of 7 are now behind Herklotz.
Dombrowski
Kudus
Morton
Sicard
Barguil
Eastman
Berhane
Barguil and Eastman crack now, while Herklotz maintains around a 1 minute advantage.
After those riders there are separate groups of Chiarello, Reis and Guldhammer. Then Formolo with two teammates supporting him and Kirsch and then Areruya.
Herklotz is in the final kilometer. He looks like he can keep this pace going, unlikely anyone catches the German.
He can really take his time to celebrate. Silvio Herklotz wins stage 12 and conquers Monte Zoncolan!
Kudus sprints to 2nd ahead of Dombrowski and Morton. They all come in 55'' behind Herklotz.
5th place goes to Sicard, 6th to today's very strong ride by Berhane. Both are at 1'31''.
Eastman and Barguil are 7th and 8th with a gap of 2'13''.
Reis and Chiarello distance Guldhammer at the finish. 2'57'' and 3'27'' for the Dane.
Formolo comes in with Kirsch at 3'48''. Areruya 4'19'' and Bernal 5'22''. Meintjes and Preidler is the biggest losers today both at around 6 minutes.
GC wise Herklotz extends his lead, now 2 minutes ahead of Dombrowski and Kudus. Sicard moves into 5th and Morton into 6th. Berhane and Barguil both move into the top 10 also.
Kemboi remains the ciclamino leader, but Herklotz has now moved into 3rd. The German also moves into 2nd in the KOM classification, which now lead by Roman. Areruya has done just enough today to move back into the maglia bianca as the best young rider.
