Giro d'Italia - Stage 11

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/profile.jpg

Well the breakaways haven't had much success so far, but this stage looks like it could produce a breakaway win. Nearly 208 km with lots of hills that total 6 KOM sprints. The finish is far enough from the last climb that it shouldn't be a big incentive for the GC riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/PCM0001.jpg

The first move to get in the breakaway comes from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Sergis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Quita.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/PCM0002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Chokri going next.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/PCM0003.jpg

More movement now from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Rikunov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Stoltz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman and maglia azzurra pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Bax.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/PCM0004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Chernetskiy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Smit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Hagen also joins this 2nd group. The break is not set yet though, because pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Aegon have missed these moves and are now chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/PCM0005.jpg

As the fan on the road takes a photo this is the breakaway. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Aegon have given up their chase. All the riders here are 10 minutes behind in GC and they are:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Sergis
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Stoltz
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Quita
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Hagen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Rikunov
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Smit
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Bax
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Chernetskiy
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Chokri

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/PCM0006.jpg

As expected no one here is interested in the sprint points. It's all about the KOMs and possible stage win. The good news for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Bax is that he has a big points advantage over everyone else here. The bad news is there are enough KOM points available to change that. Speaking of the advantage, the breakaway have 3'31'' over the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/PCM0007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Chernetskiy makes an early move on this hardest, first climb of the day and grabs the 10 pts. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Hagen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Bax and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Sergis are behind him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Chokri just struggles a bit, but manages to get back on the long descent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/PCM0008.jpg

On the next climb it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Quita that uses the same strategy and easily collects 6 pts. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Chernetskiy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Bax take 4 and 2. The breakaway's gap is still over 3 minutes. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Chokri has been dropped for good now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/PCM0010.jpg

Two category 3 climbs in quick succession now. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Quita wins the first one ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Sergis.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/PCM0011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Quita makes two for two here as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Sergis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman switch places. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Chernetskiy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Bax are still here, but the other riders have been dropped from the front of the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/PCM0012.jpg

The escapees are starting the penultimate climb. Their gap has been reduced to 1'48'' with 43 km remaining. Expect the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Bax and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Sergis to be perhaps a tiny bit fresher as they had teammates doing their turns earlier on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/PCM0013.jpg

Speaking of being fresh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Bax is done for today. Has he done enough to preserve the maglia azzurra. We'll have to wait and see.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/PCM0014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman is the best climber in this group and with the volume of elevation the riders have tackled today, he's the one still looking very good. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Chernetskiy struggling to follow and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Quita has also lost ground here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/PCM0015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Sergis also can't follow the Serbian on the descent. It's every man by himself now for the last 31 km.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/PCM0016.jpg

Everyone but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman have been caught on this final category 2 climb. The Serbian holds a 2 minute advantage with 2 km to the summit and from there 24 km to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/PCM0019.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman extends his lead to 2'38'' at the top of the climb. He has a chance to solo to victory here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/PCM0018.jpg

He's done with the descent and looks towards the 10 km to go banner. His advantage has grown over 3 minutes. The peloton aren't that interested to chase this down or simply feel they can't.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/PCM0009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Aleksandar Roman can take his time to celebrate this victory. He was the strongest today and took his opportunity. Also great work from Isostar putting multiple riders in the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/PCM0020.jpg

The peloton of 55 riders are now approaching the finish. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Meintjes is trying to surprise everyone by attacking, there are bonus seconds available for 2nd and 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/PCM0021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Meintjes is brought back and we do get a sprint finish. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Toupalik wins the sprint for 2nd which is a surprise. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz grabs 3rd which is a great result for him with more bonus seconds and some ciclamino jersey points.

The rest of the top 10 goes like this. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Kiriakidis 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Buchmann 5th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Formolo 6th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Villella adds to Isostar's success in 7th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Kämna 8th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Lastra 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Areruya in 10h.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/PCM0022.jpg

GC wise pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Herklotz slightly increases his advantage over the rest. He also moves into 5th in the points classification, the leader remains pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Roman was close to taking the KOM lead as well, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Bax did just enough to hold on for another day. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Bernal stays in white.
