Well the breakaways haven't had much success so far, but this stage looks like it could produce a breakaway win. Nearly 208 km with lots of hills that total 6 KOM sprints. The finish is far enough from the last climb that it shouldn't be a big incentive for the GC riders.
The first move to get in the breakaway comes from Sergis and Quita.
Chokri going next.
More movement now from Rikunov, Stoltz, Roman and maglia azzurra Bax.
Chernetskiy, Smit and Hagen also joins this 2nd group. The break is not set yet though, because Aegon have missed these moves and are now chasing.
As the fan on the road takes a photo this is the breakaway. Aegon have given up their chase. All the riders here are 10 minutes behind in GC and they are:
Sergis
Stoltz
Quita
Hagen
Roman
Rikunov
Smit
Bax
Chernetskiy
Chokri
As expected no one here is interested in the sprint points. It's all about the KOMs and possible stage win. The good news for Bax is that he has a big points advantage over everyone else here. The bad news is there are enough KOM points available to change that. Speaking of the advantage, the breakaway have 3'31'' over the peloton.
Chernetskiy makes an early move on this hardest, first climb of the day and grabs the 10 pts. Roman, Hagen, Bax and Sergis are behind him. Chokri just struggles a bit, but manages to get back on the long descent.
On the next climb it's Quita that uses the same strategy and easily collects 6 pts. Chernetskiy and Bax take 4 and 2. The breakaway's gap is still over 3 minutes. Chokri has been dropped for good now.
Two category 3 climbs in quick succession now. Quita wins the first one ahead of Roman and Sergis.
Quita makes two for two here as Sergis and Roman switch places. Chernetskiy and Bax are still here, but the other riders have been dropped from the front of the race.
The escapees are starting the penultimate climb. Their gap has been reduced to 1'48'' with 43 km remaining. Expect the likes of Roman, Bax and Sergis to be perhaps a tiny bit fresher as they had teammates doing their turns earlier on.
Speaking of being fresh, Bax is done for today. Has he done enough to preserve the maglia azzurra. We'll have to wait and see.
Roman is the best climber in this group and with the volume of elevation the riders have tackled today, he's the one still looking very good. Chernetskiy struggling to follow and Quita has also lost ground here.
Sergis also can't follow the Serbian on the descent. It's every man by himself now for the last 31 km.
Everyone but Roman have been caught on this final category 2 climb. The Serbian holds a 2 minute advantage with 2 km to the summit and from there 24 km to the finish.
Roman extends his lead to 2'38'' at the top of the climb. He has a chance to solo to victory here.
He's done with the descent and looks towards the 10 km to go banner. His advantage has grown over 3 minutes. The peloton aren't that interested to chase this down or simply feel they can't.
Aleksandar Roman can take his time to celebrate this victory. He was the strongest today and took his opportunity. Also great work from Isostar putting multiple riders in the breakaway.
The peloton of 55 riders are now approaching the finish. Meintjes is trying to surprise everyone by attacking, there are bonus seconds available for 2nd and 3rd.
Meintjes is brought back and we do get a sprint finish. Toupalik wins the sprint for 2nd which is a surprise. Herklotz grabs 3rd which is a great result for him with more bonus seconds and some ciclamino jersey points.
The rest of the top 10 goes like this. Kiriakidis 4th, Buchmann 5th, Formolo 6th. Villella adds to Isostar's success in 7th, Kämna 8th, Lastra 9th and Areruya in 10h.
GC wise Herklotz slightly increases his advantage over the rest. He also moves into 5th in the points classification, the leader remains Kemboi. Roman was close to taking the KOM lead as well, but Bax did just enough to hold on for another day. Bernal stays in white.
