Awesome translations
ruben
After Issoiso gave the example in the Vuelta discussion thread, I decided to give the horrible world of translators a go..

I took the following text of cyclingnews.com:

Robert Gesink is only 22 years-old, but he is already mixing it up with the big guys in his first Grand Tour. Gesink currently lies fifth overall in the Vuelta a España, less than six minutes behind leader Alberto Contador (Astana)

Then I used https://tr.voila.fr to translate it from
English to French to German to Spanish and back to English

The Results:

Robert Gesink has only 22 years, but he already confuses it with the big types in his first big return in car. At present Gesink is fifth in whole in Return Espa ñ, he has, less than six minutes behind the chief Alberto Contador (Astana)

So, poor Gesink only has 22 years (will he shortly die?). And yet he already confuses people by returning his car? Nevermind the chief Contador?

2nd and last is Babelfish with the following test:

Milram team captain Erik Zabel was given a special honor before the start of stage 17 of the Vuelta a España. The director of the race, Abraham Olano, recognized the German for his participation in all three Grand Tours this year. In addition to Zabel, Marzio Bruseghin (Lampre) was also awarded.

The order is:
English -> Greek -> French -> Portuguese -> English

The Milram group captain Erik Zabel was given to a suplemental price before the beginning of phase 17 of Vuelta Spain. The director of the race, d' Abraham Olano, recognized German for its participation and in the three great returns this year. It are of Zabel, Marzio Bruseghin (Lampre) was attributed equally.

So instead of awarding Zabel a price, he is given away to a suplemental price? Hmm. Less funny though Sad but still most entertaining

I believe the confusion often arises due to the differences in language in use of joining words (ie and, to, at, a, is, etc). Whilst some languages use them, others have shortened them down to maybe a l' which then gets ignored by translation sites. So when it comes back out, it just is a load of trash.

Google translate seems to do a pretty good job for me since they updated it.

Nothing will ever beat the "Valverde wants to dig Victoria sexually" translation. Mainly because there was no mention of "dig", "Victoria" or "sexually" in the original text

With the same process Google Translate (https://translate.google.com/translate_t#) gives you this

Robert Gesink is only 22 years but is already too large mixing, in his first Grand Tour. Gesink is currently fifth in the overall Tour of Spain, less than six minutes late leader Alberto Contador (Astana)

There is a couple of good translators over the Internet: one, is a demonstration from a software in Linguatec website. The second one, is one of these gadgets for Vista's sidebar...
