Thank you hillis for a great preview!!!
GP Izola
History
Year | Winner | Team | | 2020 | W. Kelderman | Philips | Group Sprint |
Izola, Slovenia and the GP Izola. Kelderman won it by a few inches in front of Eiking last year. Kelderman will not be here to defend his title, after the promotion of his employer, Philips. Eiking however, will line up to try and improve his second place finish from last year. The decisive move was made on the smaller incline on the last lap. How will it play out this year?
Nobody knows, obviously. But the main players will have taken notes from the 2020 edition, as loads of favorites missed the move and will be looking for revenge in 2021.
Profile
The race is rated as hilly, which certainly seems true for the beginning. The riders climb a local hill four times, heading back down to Izola each time. Then we circle around Izola some more but without taking that hill. Those laps are not entirely flat but not shockingly difficult either. At 146 kilometer it is also a rather short race. Which is all the makings of a fast paced race, on paper. Will the 2021 editon be for the punchy sprinters or will a specialist take it in 2021 as in 2020?
Favorites | HL | AC | RS | Lieutenant | HL | AC | RS | | Eiking | 80 | 76 | 74 | Skjerping | 77 | 65 | 67 | | Boswell | 80 | 76 | 73 | Seigle | 75 | 70 | 72 | | Edmondson | 79 | 76 | 72 | Watson | 78 | 72 | 72 | | Bystrom | 79 | 76 | 72 | Calmejane | 77 | 76 | 76 | | Chaves | 79 | 72 | 73 | Mudarra | 77 | 68 | 70 | | Palini | 78 | 74 | 68 | Felline | 77 | 78 | 73 | | Paez | 77 | 76 | 70 | Fernandez | 75 | 66 | 69 | | Tsatevich | 77 | 75 | 73 | Serry | 77 | 67 | 68 | | Paulus | 77 | 71 | 68 | Lavery | 76 | 77 | 71 | | Robov | 76 | 71 | 73 | Jacobsen | 73 | 67 | 70
All pre-race favorites got a strong supporting rider, as many of the leaders have their number 2 being able to surge a late attack and actually threaten to go all the way. The dynamics of the peloton will be highly effected by this factor, as there can quickly arise a cat and mouse game in the final rounds. Eiking followed Kelderman in the final bump in the road in last years edition, and the duo fought it out alone. Will it be Chavez making the first move this year? Or will it be Boswell, Edmondson, or the ever aggressive Bystrøm? The field is close skill wise, and that should make the final a proper dog fight.
Outsiders | HL | AC | RS | Lieutenant | HL | AC | RS | | Kump | 76 | 79 | 72 | Riesebeek | 73 | 72 | 75 | | Haas | 75 | 73 | 72 | McConvey | 72 | 61 | 69 | | De Tier | 75 | 69 | 72 | Pushpakumara | 74 | 74 | 75
You might feel that Kump should be on the favorite list, and you might be right. But having only one edition to judge the climate of this race, Kump with his super fast finishing ability, will by all odds sit calm and hope for the sprint finish. And last year's editon coming down to a late attack and duo sprint finish for the win, Kump is a dark horse pre flag drop.
Sprinters | SP | AC | HL | Aggressors | FT | AC | RS | | Kump | 80 | 79 | 76 | McEvoy | 79 | 79 | 70 | | Kristoff | 80 | 74 | 65 | Calmejane | 78 | 76 | 76 | | Boivin | 79 | 80 | 70 | Bystrom | 78 | 76 | 72 | | Sanikwathi | 78 | 78 | 66 | Declerq | 78 | 76 | 71 | | King | 78 | 73 | 65 | Lavery | 77 | 77 | 71 | | Naesen | 77 | 76 | 72 | Thill | 77 | 66 | 73 | | Redecker | 77 | 78 | 72 | Paez | 76 | 76 | 70 | | Prasad | 77 | 79 | 68 | Kuznetsov | 76 | 75 | 73 | | McEvoy | 75 | 79 | 76 | Robov | 76 | 71 | 73 | | Korosec | 75 | 78 | 75 | Riesebeek | 76 | 72 | 75
Kump finds himself on another list aswell this year. He is the top sprinter in the field, as he can handle the bumps a lot better then riders like Kristoff, Sanikwathi and King. A sprinter that cannot be forgotten is Boivin of course, as he is also known for handling some incline better then most sprinters. And should it come down to a field sprint. He is a man to watch out for.
What is the X-Factor in the 2021 editon you might ask? Well, a late surge pre final hill or maybe over the top? If it happens McEvoy is most likely to part of it. He can handle the hills, he has a fast finish aswell as a reputation for being unafraid of attacking the field. He might be handcuffed by the fact that Bystrøm might have a clear leader role for Trans Looney.
A team that allways brings a lot of heat is Crabbe-CC Chevigny. Several riders on the lists above and a 2021 campaign filled with tons of top 10 finishes allready. If the field is together in the final round, look out for the black, yellow and red squad in the front of the peloton.
All in all, this reporter believes the 2021 edition to have a heavy attack in the final incline with a ton of riders scrambling to hang on. With Hello Fresh trying to keep it together for Kump.

Thanks Hillis and Nemo.
A Top 15 for Haas would be Glanbia's target. If there is a sprint King might grab some points

I'm hoping for a selective reduced sprint so Paez can have a shot at a podium. Not too big a group as to avoid some of those sprinters. Guess we'll see what happens. Either way, Top 10 is a MUST.
Thanks for the preview hillis and very much looking forward to your report Nemo!

I don't see where Kump will be dropped. I wouldn't even rule out Boivin.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Boswell has been on a hot streak in the hills, on paper this doesn't look hard enough for him but I though that about Coppa Placci.
Thanks for the preview.

Rooting for Kump obviously, but I also like Tsatevich for this. A home victory would be fantastic though!

Hoping for a Slovenian win with either Kump or someone from Looney Toons

What a race, what a win, what an awesome podium! The Local guy ahead of the local team. The Arrow from Dolenjska strikes again, what a joy to see!
Fantastic report and great racing as well, you've got to love this race as a whole

GG Kump!
I was hoping for better then 5th here, but we'll take it.
Sprinting ability became the X factor for sure here.

Good race from an AI perspective and nice to see a former rider with a strong 2nd. Kump a very worthy winner!
For Paez, I don’t think I could ask for much more than 8th to be honest. Did what he needed to do being in the leading group and clearly didn’t quite have the legs for the sprint. Hasnaoui scoring some surprising depth points with 12th is an added bonus too!
Thanks for the report Nemo! Followed the action very closely. Congrats to Team Kump

Kiskonen is really a hidden gem - clearly one of the surprises for the team this season.

But as I said EZ4KUMPI
Feels good to get our actual first win of the season, a surprise it took so long!

Wow, we would never believe you if we're told to have two riders top 10 and five guys in top 25 here in Izola. Great team performance!
Congrats with the nice sprint victory whitejersey and thank you for this wonderful report Nemolito! |
